How Are These Verses Used In The Wrong Way
On the surface, these verses may seem to assure you that you can ask Jesus to give you anything you want and then be sure to receive it. This is not a correct interpretation of what Jesus said, however. Interpreting the âask and you shall receiveâ verses as a magical guarantee of getting whatever you want will only disappoint you. Itâs not that God doesnât want to bless you itâs that he wants to do it in the way thatâs truly best for you.
People who assume that the âask and you shall receiveâ verses promise they can name whatever they want and then claim it will soon find that this approach doesnât work. not. Try it and youâll find that you canât just make something you want appear in your life just because you pray for it. No matter how much you want something, you canât convince God to give it to you just by praying. For example, if you want an expensive sports car, you can pray for it with utmost sincerity over and over again and not have that car show up in your driveway if God knows itâs not better to. accede to this particular request.
Be Mindful Of Your Heart And Desires
And while the clear call here is to the need to ready when He comes, the principle is just as clear: we are to watch our hearts, and be mindful of the direction it follows. This will play a great part in how we pray, and what we pray for. If our hearts are weighed down with worldly and earthly things, then what do you suppose will be the trajectory of our prayers? Rather we should pray in alignment with the Spirit of God:
Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him .
Herein lies the key to asking, seeking, and knocking. When we pray according to His will then things will turn, as Jesus spoke following His statement in Matthew:
For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened .
In order to avoid frustration, and accusing God of not hearing us, let us remain faithful to Him by seeking those things which are above and not on the earth . It is then that we will understand that He is absolutely sovereign, and that He does what is best for us, and will give us that which we need, at all times, in His time.
Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart .

I recently watched a very enlightening talk by Dr John Bergsma on what we can learn from the prayers of the Old Testament patriarchs. I learned a lot from it, but in the process, he helped me understand a part of the New Testament I always struggled to explain in the past. It was John 16:23, where Jesus tells the apostles Amen Amen I say to you, whatever you ask from the Father, He will give it to you in My name. Ive heard this verse many times in my life since Ive been going to Mass since I was a teenager, and I always took it at face value. That just shows how I never took my faith seriously and never tried to go deeper and understand what God is saying to us in the Bible until recently. Since Ive started learning about my faith, Ive heard various explanations of what Jesus meant here, most of which are a version of He didnt meant that literally, because obviously some of our prayers arent good in the eyes of God, and it would be bad for us if He said yes to all of them. Ive always known that to be true, but nobody ever explained to me why Jesus said exactly what He said, and what He really meant here.

The main theme about this teaching is how God promises to provide for us anything we need in order to continue doing the work He created us to do. Jesus explains that our Father in heaven loves to answer our prayers and give us that which we seek. He tells his disciples that just like a good father gives good things to his children, so will your Father when we sincerely ask, seek, and knock.
James 4:2-3 says that we dont have because we do not ask, or if we do ask, it is with wrong motives. It can be tricky to understand. Jesus seems to put no qualifiers on this verse. Taken alone, it seems to say you only have to want something, and then ask your Father in heaven, and it will be done. There are times where that is true, but Jesus also teaches about motives, about faith, about the will of God, and about praying in Jesus name.

This is to be understood of asking of God in prayer, for such things as are wanting whether of a temporal nature, as food and raiment, which Christ, in the former chapter, had warned against an immoderate and anxious concern for or of a spiritual nature, as grace, and wisdom to behave in a proper manner, both towards God and men: and such, who ask according to the will of God, in the name of Christ, and under the direction, guidance, and influence of the Spirit, who ask in faith and fear, and with submission to the divine will, shall have what they ask for not as what they deserve, but as a free gift.
Seek, and ye shall find.
This is still meant of prayer, and of seeking God, his face and favor: which such shall find, who seek in a right way, by Christ, and with their whole hearts, diligently:
