Old Testament Predictions Of The Coming Messiah

In addition to the real presence of Jesus as the Angel of the Lord/God, J. Barton Payne listed some 574 verses in the Old Testament that had direct personal messianic foretellings. Payne found 127 personal messianic predictions involving some 348 verses that had any or all types of real and typological prophecies of Jesus first or second coming. This number was exceeded only by Alfred Edersheim, who noted that in some 558 rabbinic writings in pre-Christian times, there were some 456 separate Old Testament/Tanak passages used to refer to the Messiah or to messianic times!

In my own book, The Messiah in the Old Testament, I was able to identify 65 direct predictions of Jesus comings in the Old Testament. Few will dispute that there are at least six direct Messianic predictions in the Pentateuch: Genesis 3:15 9:27 12:2-3 49:8-12 Numbers 24:15-19 and Deuteronomy 18:15-18.

Eve was promised in Genesis 3:15 that a male descendant from her line would crush the head of the serpent, i.e., the Devil himself, and win completely over evil, as the prince of evil, Satan, would be finally vanquished. Then in Genesis 9:27, God would come and live/dwell in the tents of Shem, the Semitic peoples. But which one of the Semites did God intend: the Arabs or the Jewish people? Abraham settled that question, for God called him to go from Ur of Mesopotamia to Israel, and he was to be a blessing for all the nations on earth in Genesis 12:3.

How To Find Him On Every Last Page

Ten years ago, I was leading a feedback group for young preachers. A youth pastor gave an exposition of Judges 14 for us to critique. At the very end, he spoke of another Savior who came to deliver his people eternally. He didnt make anything of the point, and he didnt mention the name Jesus, but he included the sentence.

During the feedback session, I asked him, Why did you include that line at the end? In a flash, another student answered with a line Ive never forgotten: Because were supposed to.

The whole room groaned its approval. Everyone felt the same obligation. None of these preachers in training was sure why they ought to shift gears to Jesus, but apparently there was a rule. I see this everywhere among Christians. We feel we ought to view the Old Testament as Christian Scripture, but were not quite sure why or how. It seems like such a crunch of gears. But is it?

Perhaps wed be helped by a simple framework for how Christ is at the heart of the Scriptures: he is patterned, promised, and present from Genesis onward.

Comparisons To The Crucifixion

Rather than try to provide an exposition of the entire psalm, for the purposes of considering the messianic aspects of the psalm, I will focus on the verses that have the greatest correspondence with Jesus’ crucifixion. While I have no doubt that the actual events of Jesus’ crucifixion took place as recorded in the Gospels, it is probable that the terminology by which they were communicated was influenced by the words of this startling psalm that we are studying:

David’s lament seemed to be about his own sorrow, but in reality he was relating the lament of the Son of David, the Messiah himself.

Messianic Hope In The Post Exilic Period

Two prophets in particular, Zechariah and Malachi, spoke of Messiah to the Israelites who had returned to their land after their exile. God’s Servant, the Branch was to be sent . Even some of the details of His coming were given:

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey .

Malachi foretold of the coming of John the Baptist, who would come to announce the arrival of the Messiah in the spirit of the prophet Elijah:

“Behold, I am going to send My messenger, and he will clear the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of hosts .

The broad outline of messianic promise, found in the Pentateuch, has been greatly filled in. We now know that Messiah will be of the Davidic line, virgin born in the city of Bethlehem, introduced by a prophet like Elijah, and presented to His people riding on the foal of a donkey.

Why Have You Forsaken Me

Pin on Daily Devotions

Verse 1 was on Jesus’ lips during his crucifixion:

“1My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning? 2O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent.”

Before the Psalms were numbered, a particular psalm would be referred to by its first line. In speaking the first line of Psalm 22, Jesus pointed not to just the first verse, but to the whole psalm.

However, his quoting the first line may be significant as well. Though we are probing here beyond the explicit teaching of scripture, when Jesus was on the cross bearing our sins, he may have felt spiritual separation from the holy God because of our sin he was bearing. He felt alone because he took our sin and guilt upon himself.

Q3. Why do you think Jesus spoke the words of Psalm 22:1? What was he seeking to express? What was he feeling? How did God answer his plea?

The Messiah Will Be Humbled In Order To Serve Mankind

Prophecy:

You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands you put everything under their feet

Fulfillment:

It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified:

What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him?You made them a little lower than the angels you crowned them with glory and honor and put everything under their feet.

In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone .

Messianic Hope In The Exile

The years the Jews spent in exile were some of the darkest hours of the nation’s history. The disobedient people of God experienced exactly what God had warned through the prophets. Nevertheless, God gave His people hope during this time by assuring them that He would restore His people to Himself and to their land. Once again, the Messiah was the central figure in Israel’s hope for the future. Two prophets in particular, Ezekiel and Daniel, encouraged the nation by speaking comforting words about Israel’s Messiah. Ezekiel spoke of Messiah as Israel’s Shepherd:

Then I will set over them one shepherd, My servant David, and he will feed them he will feed them himself and be their shepherd. And I, the Lord, will be their God, and My servant David will be prince among them I, the Lord, have spoken” .

What better words could this scattered flock hear than the promise of Messiah as their Good Shepherd.

Daniel spoke to the nation in captivity as well. He described the second coming of the Messiah in terms of His majesty and splendor:

“I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. And to Him was given dominion, glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed” .

Isaac Is A Resurrection Of Jesus Prophecy In The Old Testament

Old Testament prophecies to recognize the Messiah with Dr. Gary Cohen

Genesis 22:4Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.

Genesis 22 is one of the most unique types in the Old Testament because while others foreshadow Christs death or resurrection, Abraham and Isaac foreshadow Christs death and resurrection, with a confirmation in the New Testament:

  • Hebrews 11:17 prefigures Christs sacrifice through Isaac.
  • Hebrews 11:19 prefigures Christs resurrection through Isaac.

Genesis 22:4 is not only referring to the day Abraham arrived at Moriah. The verse also identifies the day Abraham received Isaac back from the dead. Hebrews 11:17 says:

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son

Twice it says Isaac was offered up, drawing a parallel between him and Jesus Who was offered up for our sins . Second, Isaac is given the same title as Jesus: only begotten son. Hebrews 11:18 says:

Of whom it was said, In Isaac your seed shall be called

This quote from Genesis 21:12 identifies Isaac as the promised son Abrahams descendants would come from, as opposed to Ishmael. Hebrews 11:19 says:

Concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

Old Testament Messianic Prophecies Quoted In The New Testament

The New Testament frequently cites Jewish scripture to support the claim of the Early Christians that Jesus was the promised Jewish Messiah, but few of these citations are actual predictions in their original context. The majority of these quotations and references are taken from the Book of Isaiah, but they range over the entire corpus of Jewish writings.

Jews do not regard any of these as having been fulfilled by Jesus, and in some cases do not regard them as messianic prophecies at all. Old Testament prophecies about Jesus are either not thought to be prophecies by biblical scholars or do not explicitly refer to the Messiah.Historical criticism is unable to argue for the fulfillment of prophecy or that Jesus was indeed the Messiah because he fulfilled messianic propheciesas historical criticism has no way to “construct such an argument” within that academic method.

What Is Messianic Expectation In The Old Testament

Manuella Affejee – Vatican City

Father David Neuhaus, SJ, is the superior of the Jesuits in the Holy Land and professor at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Jerusalem. He is also the former patriarchal vicar for Hebrew-speaking Catholics.

What is the origin of the word “Messiah”? When did it first appear in Scripture and in what context?

The word messiah is derived from the Hebrew word mashiah. In Greek, the word is translated in the ancient translation of the Old Testament as Christos. It means the anointed one. Christians are often shocked to learn that this word appears only about fifty times in the entire Old Testament and almost never refers to a saviour or redeemer.

Messiah in the Old Testament refers rather to three different figures in the life of the people of Israel. The first time the word is encountered in the Old Testament is in the Book of Leviticus, in chapter 4, where the messiah is the priest . In that chapter, the role of the priest in offering the sacrifices for sin is described. In the Historical Books, the messiah, the anointed one, is the king. In the Book of Psalms where the word messiah appears a number of times, it refers almost always to a king. Many of the royal psalms long for a righteous king, who will rule according to Gods will and thus bring justice and peace.

Is messianism, the expectation of a providential man who will bring peace and happiness, peculiar to Judaism?

Signs Of The Messiah Fulfilled In The New Testament

Revelation 21:23-24: The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its light. The nations will walk by its light and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it . . .

Revelation 22:2: On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing 12 crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

Jesus authority, power, and rulership are different from the earths system. While it is absolute, it is good, it is invitational, and it is healing. Jesus is the only rightful ruler of the world. He is the only rightful ruler of my heart. He deserves my utmost obedience. The obedience of the nations is rightfully His.

Over the years, He has seen so much disobedience. I cant imagine the atrocities He has witnessed. The nations and rulers have wielded power for selfish gain and fleshly exploits. So few, even in Israels kingly line, really reflected the true Kings heart. What grief He has carried. Isaiah 42:4 says that He will not falter or be discouraged until He establishes justice on earth. I am so thankful that this is promised and is a sure thing. I get very discouraged and wonder if He is paying attention to the injustices that are being perpetrated in our world.
