Humans Including Evangelists Calling Jesus Son Of God

Why Does The Bible Say Jesus Grew In Wisdom If He Is God?

Did Jesus Ever Say He Was The Son Of God

Jesus claimed to be the Son of God on several occasions, the most clearly stated in John 10:36 which is shown in context below. Here are some examples of Him claiming God as His Father or Him as the Son of God:

Jesus was very clear that He claimed to be the Son of God. The Old Testament gave many prophecies depicting exactly who the Son of God was in order for Gods people to know for certainty who He is before He ever came on the scene. Jesus Christ alone fulfills all of those prophecies and can alone truly claim this position. Thus we can trust that what Jesus says is true and trustworthy.

Verses That Say: Jesus Is Not God Nor The Literal Son Of God

90 Verses says: Jesus is not God

Compiled by Adenino Otari

All four Gospels record Jesus as saying, Blessed are the peace-makers they will be called sons of God.

The word son cannot be accepted literally because in the Bible, God apparently addresses many of his chosen servants as son and sons. The Hebrews believed God is One, and had neither wife nor children in any literal sense. Therefore, it is obvious the expression son of God merely meant Servant of God one who, because of faithful service, was close and dear to God as a son is to his father.

Christians who came from a Greek or Roman background, later misused this term. In their heritage, son of God signified an incarnation of a god or someone born of a physical union between male and female gods. This can be seen in Acts 14: 11-13, where we read that when Paul and Barnabas preached in a city of Turkey, pagans claimed they were gods incarnate. They called Barnabas the Roman god Zeus, and Paul the Roman god Hermes.

Furthermore, the New Testament Greek word translated as son are pias and paida which mean servant, or son in the sense of servant. These are translated to son in reference to Jesus and servant in reference to all others in some translations of the Bible. So, consistent with other verses, Jesus was merely saying that he is Gods servant.

Jesus Said I Am The Way The Truth And The Life

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me .

Christians are often criticized for claiming that Jesus is the only way to God. After all, there are billions of non-Christians in the world. Are we really so narrow minded and bigoted that we think these people will be excluded from heaven just because they happened to be born in the wrong country or have been taught the wrong religion?

Rabbi Schmuley Boteach summed up the feelings of many when he said, I am absolutely against any religion that says that one faith is superior to another. I dont see how that is anything different than spiritual racism. Its a way of saying that we are closer to God than you, and thats what leads to hatred.5

Those who make such objections have a point. If Jesus is merely one more religious teacher out of countless others, then his claim would be absurd. How can one person have a monopoly on the truth or proclaim his way as the only way to God? After all, humans are finite and fallible, while God is infinitely greater than our small minds can comprehend.

Consider this somewhat imperfect analogy: The movie Braveheart described the exploits of William Wallace as he led the Scottish people in rebellion against Edward Longshanks, the king of England. As Wallaces victories became more numerous, his reputation grew exponentially. Then one day he came to lead some Scottish warriors into battle who had never met him.

Jesus Said He Existed Before Abraham”Your father Abraham rejoiced as he looked forward to my coming. He saw it and was glad.” The people said, “You aren’t even fifty years old. How can you say you have seen Abraham?” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I Am!”4

Jesus Said to See Him is the Same as Seeing GodJesus shouted to the crowds, “If you trust me, you are trusting not only me, but also God who sent me. For when you see me, you are seeing the one who sent me. I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.”5

“No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?”6

Jesus Said He Could Forgive Sins”…that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”–he then said to the paralytic–“Rise, pick up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God…”7

God And Jesus Are One Because God Lives In Jesus

The most Bible Verses that are used to claim that Jesus is God, are Verses which actually prove that God lives in Jesus. God is spirit and therefore He dwells in his children.

Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

That God lives in Jesus doesnt mean that Jesus is God. It means that God and Jesus are one. And Jesus taught us that we can become one with God as well! But do we become God then? Of course not!

That they all may be one as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them that they may be one, even as we are one.

Adam and Eve were one as well. But does this make them one and the same person? Surely not. They still remain two persons, even though they are one. If two people marry each other, will they be one person? Of course not. But still, they will be inseparable in Gods eyes.

Don’t Miss: What Is The Chronological Order Of The Bible

Is Jesus Just A Man

Brother Bob: So, dear friends, here the Bible clearly teaches us that Jesus was placed above all things to the Church. This is the Jesus of the Bible. Any other Jesus would be a different Jesus than the Jesus of the Bible. But heres the question that some pose when they read that verse: If Jesus is just a manas we cited from I Timothy 2:5 just a moment agoif Jesus is a man , then why is He also worshipped? In Ephesians 1:22, He was placed above all things. So doesnt that make Him God?

First off, no one heard us read or say that Jesus is just a man. We cited 1 Timothy 2:5, but it didnt say that Hes just a man or just an ordinary man, like all of us. Instead, what you did hear from the Holy Scriptures was the various qualities or distinctive, unique qualities that the Bible gives or attributes to Jesus, which proves that He is not just an ordinary man. And regarding the point , He is worshipped, so therefore He must be God. Yes, we do worship Jesus. But why? Is it because He is God? Answer of the Bible, Philippians chapter 2, verses 9, 10 and 11, answers this way:

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Audience: Thats in the Bible!

The Bible Contains The Word Of God

I disagree.

You say, Mr. Pilliod, how could you disagree with that statement?! Good question. Let me point you to a statement from the apostle Paul in his second letter to Timothy, in particular, chapter 3 and verses 15-17:

And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Id like to focus on the word inspiration now. In the Greek it is , or theopneustos, which comes from 2 root words: theos, meaning God, and pneuma, meaning spirit or breath or wind. So what we have here is that God breathed out His Word through men such that the Scriptures were written.

Id like to also discuss, briefly, the phrase from our passage that reads, All Scripture is given Did you hear that ? All Scripture. Therefore, the Bible does not merely contain Gods Word, but it all is Gods Word! If the Bible merely contained the Word of God, then that would mean that some small portion of the Bible was not the Word of God. Or it might mean that 50% of the Bible was not the Word of God. Or it could mean that the vast majority of the Bible was not the Word of God.

If Jesus Never Called Himself God How Did He Become One

“If Jesus had not been declared God by his followers, his followers would’ve remained a sect within Judaism, a small Jewish sect,” says historian Bart Ehrman.

When Bart Ehrman was a young Evangelical Christian, he wanted to know how God became a man, but now, as an agnostic and historian of early Christianity, he wants to know how a man became God.

When and why did Jesus’ followers start saying “Jesus as God” and what did they mean by that? His new book is called How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee.

“In this book I actually do not take a stand on either the question of whether Jesus was God, or whether he was actually raised from the dead,” Ehrman tells Fresh Air‘s Terry Gross. “I leave open both questions because those are theological questions based on religious beliefs and I’m writing the book as a historian.”

Ehrman is the author of several books about early Christianity, including Misquoting Jesus and Jesus Interrupted.

Jesus Claimed To Be God Verses

6. John 10:33 We are not stoning you for any good work, they replied, but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.

7. John 5:18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Are God And Jesus The Same Person

Brother Bob: Who is Jesus? Who is God? These are questions that usually stem from what some would call a confusing, nevertheless, a very common concept that in fact God and Jesus are one and the same. But how does the Bible respond to that? John has asked and the Bible, the Bible gives a response. First of all, we cite from the book of Matthew, chapter 3, verse 17:

And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Brother Bob: Here, dear friends, God is the one who introduced Jesus. God introduced Jesus as His Son. Thats according to the Father Himself. So John asked, Well, who is Jesus? God answers by saying, Thats My Son. Never has any correct translation of the Bible ever said that Christ is, in fact, God the Son. What can be read very clearly from the Bible is the fact that Christ is the Son of God. God the Son and Son of God are two very, very, different things and they must not be interchanged. Aside from being the Son of God, Johns question was, Who is Jesus? So theres so many verses that we could cite. How else was Jesus introduced in the Holy Scriptures? For example, if we were to read Acts, chapter 2, verse 36, the Bible says and shows that Jesus was made Lord:

Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Brother Bob: In the book of Acts as well chapter 5, verse 31, it mentions that Jesus was also made as Savior:

If God Put Jesus Above Everything Is Jesus God

Brother Bob: Thats in the Bible! Remember obeying the commandments of God, as we just read also, thats what gives glory to God. God, as we read, highly exalted Jesus, gave Him a name above every other name, and gave the instruction that people at every knee should bow. Bowing is a form of worship. And thats the commandment and instruction of God to us all. So we have to obey and follow that because thats what will give glory to God the Father. Sometimes though, people reason out and say for example, If Hes above everything, thats got to make Him God. Its got to make Him God, because only God is above, is placed above everything else. What do you think, studio audience? Does that seem like a reasonable conclusion to draw?

Audience: Yes.

Brother Bob: Seems, seems reasonable. I turn, however, here, 1 CorinthiansApostle Paul, this is the Good News BibleI turn to 1 Corinthians 15. Lets take a look here at verse 27 and 28. How does the Bible respond to that?

For the scripture says, God put all things under his feet. It is clear, of course, that the words all things do not include God himself, who puts all things under Christ. But when all things have been placed under Christs rule, then he himself, the Son, will place himself under God, who placed all things under him and God will rule completely over all.

Brother Bob: Who is over all? God. Jesus is over all, with one exemption. Whos that?

Audience: God.
