What Happened On Good Friday

He Is Risen

The wages of sin is death. Every single person who has ever lived on earth has sinned, and deserves to pay the penalty. Not only physical death, but also that our spirit is eternally separated from God, our Creator. With one exception. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth as the Son of Man, a human being like us and in the strength of Gods Spirit, He lived a completely blameless, pure life on earth, overcoming all sin.

When Jesus was crucified on Calvary, He died, an innocent man, the only person in all history who did not deserve death. He took upon Himself the punishment for the sins of the whole world, including all of your and my sin, and turned Gods fury against sin away from us!

Jesus never had to atone for sins He had committed, but His death became the atonement for our sins. It means that if I believe in Him, all my sins will be forgiven. Wiped out. Forgotten. On Good Friday, I received grace that I in no way deserve or can ever pay back:

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins Ephesians 2:1.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.Psalm 32:1-2.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 6:23.

In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.1 John 4:10.

Does The Bible Say He Is Risen Or He Has Risen

To say, He has risen, puts the emphasis on the action of rising, and implies that Jesus is the one who initiated the rising. But to say, He is risen, puts the emphasis on the fact that he is now alive, and implies that Jesus is not the one who initiated this rising, but that he was raised by the Father.

He Is Not Here He Has Risen

BUT on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead?”

“He is not here, but He has risen!”

Luke 24:1-6 NASB

I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

Psalm 16:8-10 NIV

Jesus Appears To His Disciples

36 Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, Peace to you.37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen a spirit. 38 And He said to them, Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself.Handle Me and see, for aspirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.

40 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 But while they still did not believe for joy, and marveled, He said to them, Have you any food here?42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. 43 And He took it and ate in their presence.

Why Is The Resurrection So Important

He Is Risen: Easter Bible Story for Kids – Matthew 27 (Sharefaithkids.com)

Why is Easter important to Christians ? Why do we celebrate the resurrection and deem it important?

Briefly put, it is the essence of our faith. Let me explain.

When God created man, He breathed life into him, making him a living soul. When man sinned, his ultimate punishment was death. He would die both physically and spiritually. He could not stand before the righteousness of God as the sin in which he was born made him unclean. Throughout the Old Testament, beginning in Genesis chapter 3, God promises a redeemer, someone to remove the penalty of death.

The Lord commanded the children of Israel, His chosen people, to make certain sacrifices. These sacrifices were required to cover the sin of His people. They did not take that sin away nor did they remove the punishment of death.

We know that God loved the world so much that He sent His own son to be a sacrificial lamb. The ultimate sacrifice. The final sacrifice.

Jesus had to die, but he also had to raise from the grave. He had to defeat death. BUT it is not enough that Jesus died and rose again, we must call on his name in order to be saved. We must believe who he is and what he did for us. Paul emphasizes this in the following verses.

If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Mary Magdalene And Other Women Are Witnesses Of The Resurrected Lord

Discuss Matthew 28:115 Luke 24:112 and John 20:110. Invite class members to read selected verses aloud. Explain that after Jesus was crucified, his body was wrapped in clean linen cloths and placed in a tomb belonging to Joseph of Arimathea, one of Jesus disciples . This was done quickly because the Sabbath was about to begin. The morning after the Sabbath, Mary Magdalene and other women returned to the tomb with spices and ointments to more thoroughly anoint and embalm Jesus body.

  • What did Mary Magdalene and the other women find when they came to Jesus tomb? What did the angels tell the women?

  • What did the angels mean when they said, He is risen? What does it mean to be resurrected? What blessings will we receive because of Jesus Resurrection?

  • President Howard W. Hunter said that the words He is not here, but is risen contain all the hope, assurance, and belief necessary to sustain us in our challenging and sometimes grief-filled lives . How has your testimony of the Atonement and the Resurrection helped you through difficult times?

  • What did the women do after the angels finished speaking? What can we learn from their example?

He Is Risen Means Jesus Is Alive

Bible Verses On Jesus’ Resurrection | Powerful Easter Scriptures | He Is Risen

This may sound like Im stating the obvious but think deeply about this for a moment. Paul said that if the resurrection didnt happen, we are most to be pitied. Everything weve believed and built our lives upon is a horrendous trick, a lie of demonic proportions.

But the resurrection of Jesus IS true, which means that Jesus is alive, which means that everything he promised will happen. Its not a myth, fairy tale, or childrens tale. Christ is risen from the dead and is achieving EVERYTHING he said he would.

Yes, things may be falling to pieces. Yes, life may be full of struggle and toil and darkness and despair. But there is good news: Jesus is alive, brought back to life by the hand of God.

If Jesus is alive, then we are never without hope.

The Resurrection Means We Have A Sympathetic Great High Priest

The risen Jesus is our Great High Priest, taking us into the Most Holy Place, and praying on our behalf. Because he also suffered, he is able to sympathize with our weakness.

He knows our frame, knows that we are dust, and strengthens us accordingly.

Jesus is near to us, helping us, praying for us. He brings our requests to God, purifying and sanctifying them. Because of our sympathetic great high priest, we can draw near with confidence.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need .
