How To Study The Bible For Kids

Intro Game : Musical Chair Share

How To Study The Bible – for Kids/Teens/Adults

Play Musical Chairs. Remove one chair. When the music stops, the person without a chair must say one true thing about themselves. The difference with this game is that you will remove no more chairs and no one leaves the game. Continue playing with one person each round saying something true about themselves. Play until interest fades. When the game is over, explain that the Bible is like the game students just played. They told true things about themselves in the game and the Bible is the place where God tells us true things about Himself.

Its Hard Because I Dont Know How To Study The Bible Myself

Youre right, it is a challenge to teach your kids something you dont know yet.

Yesterday I went to our churchs annual ministry training. At the start of the day, our pastor told about the person who discipled him in college. It started with another guy at the college asking him to go with him to a college Sunday School class, then it progressed to meeting one on one for a Bible study. It was an amazing story, and at the end, he told us the guy who discipled him was only a year older than him at 19 years old.

A 19-year-old doesnt have lots of seminary training or all of the answers to the question. He had passion, and the desire to teach people more about God.

Im betting you have more of a desire for your child to know about God than that 19-year-old did about the kid living down the hall from him in the dorm.

In my How to Study the Bible for Kids ebook there are 10 different Bible study methods in there. Each one builds on the other starting with the simplest of asking three questions and working your way up to an in-depth character study.

If you are unsure and dont want to complete the study at the same time as your kids, you can work on the Bible study method the week before them, and then teach it the week after.

All you have to be is half a step ahead of your kids when teaching them how to study the Bible.

Teaching Children To Study The Bible Can Be Simple

  • 201428 Jan

I remember feeling the full weight of my leather-covered adult Bible when I first sat down to teach my kids. At that moment, the responsibility seemed overwhelming. Questions flooded my mind: Where do I start? How much should I read? What should I say? And the biggest question of all: Am I even qualified to do this? But teaching the Bible to my children was easier than I thought. Its easier than most parents think. Here are a few helpful tips Ive learned along the way:

Start with the stories.;Theres a reason story Bibles are so popular. Who wouldnt be captivated by stories about giants, battles, miracles and shipwrecks? These stories are in your adult Bible with even more detail. Read Genesis, Exodus, 1 Samuel, the Gospels and the book of Acts. Watch your children get excited about what will happen next.

Shorter is better.;All you need is ten minutes a day. Read a shorter passagenot a whole chapterusing your Bibles chapter subdivisions as a guide. Ask a few simple questions after you read. Let the discussion go where it willthen pray. Keep your Bible at the dinner table, and pick up where you left off the next day. After a couple of weeks, your children might remind you that its Bible study time.

Look for Jesus. Stories in the Old Testament look forward to Christ: God providing a deliverer to save His people and blood sacrifices being offered up for sin. And every New Testament story points to Jesus. In each Bible story you read, look for Him.

5 Things to Remember as You Teach Your Kids to Study the Bible

As parents, we are the guides for our children as they travel through Scripture. We can provide context that helps them understand the background of the Bible, we help identify the main themes of Gods Word for them, and we assist our kids in applying Gods Word faithfully to their lives.

2 Timothy 2:15, ESV, says:

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker;who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Its our job as parents to raise approved workers who are able to rightly handle the Word of Truth.

How To Pick A Bible For Your Kids To Read Independently

Reading Level

Two of my kids were early readers, and two began reading independently a little later. Consider your childs reading level when choosing a Bible for your kids to read independently. If the;reading part is a challenge, it is more likely they will resist reading the Bible. We want to help make their Bible time as accessible and inviting as possible.

Interest

Were all more likely to read something in which we are;interested.;

For some kids, an attractive cover or beautiful illustrations will help draw them in. For some kids, manageable text take away some of the overwhelm when looking at a full page of words. Other times, an interesting approach is a great segue into full-text Bibles.

One of my boys absolutely;loved The;Adventure Bible.;He had previously resisted getting into a regular Bible-reading habit, but when we gave him his Adventure Bible,;I often found him curled up in bed reading more. What a joy it was to see him;wanting;to read his Bible and sneaking more and more time reading!

We have lots of other Bibles for kids lining our shelves, but the choices listed here are our favorites. What favorites would you add to the list?

Bible Reading Is Not Bible Study

Bible Study Guide For Kids FREE Printable

Bible study is not the same thing as Bible reading,;David Mathis says. If Bible reading is like raking for leaves, Bible study is like digging for diamonds. The Christian life calls for both.

Two key difference between reading and study are pacing and focus. When we read the Bible, we generally do so at the quickest pace our comprehension will allow. We may consume large chunks at one time, such as reading an entire book. We also look for the broad outlines of the text to know what its about or to determine how it fits into the larger scope of Gods Word. Bible reading precedes Bible study because it provides the broad perspective we need before we narrow in on specific passages.

When we study the Bible, though, we slow down to focus on the meaning of the text. We read and reread shorter units of text and spend more time focusing on specific words, clauses, verses, and paragraphs. We also ask questions of the text: What does this word mean? Why did the author use this unique phrase? How does this apply to my own life?

The essence of Bible study is asking questions of the text to discover the meaning God intended. Of the many profitable ways to study the Bible, one that everyone from preteens to Old Testament scholars has found to be particularly helpful is the inductive Bible study method. The inductive study method is an investigative approach to the Bible using three basic components:

Observation: What does the text say?

Interpretation: What does the text mean?

Bible Study By Verses

In studying the historical passages of the Bible, such as most of the Old Testament or parts of the Gospels, each verse may have only one simple meaning.

But many verses in both the Old and New Testaments are rich with many great Bible truths that will demand more detailed study. There are many ways for you to study a single Bible verse.

Bring Your Bible To School

As Christian parents, we want to introduce our kids to Jesus and see them grow in their relationship with God. One of the best ways to do that is to encourage them to read the Bible regularly. But its more than just having your kids read the Bible its teaching them how, and where to start reading.

How To Observe A Text

Ask Basic Questions Begin by showing them how to ask the basic questions that orient them to the text they are studying. For example, teach them to ask, Who wrote it? What is the genre ? When was it written? Where was the author when it was written? Why did the author write this letter? Study Bibles are helpful tools in answering these types of questions.

Words, Phrases, and Relationships Between Propositions Show them how to ask about what the author meant by using specific words and phrases. Dont assume the dictionary definition or our common understanding of terms is the same as the authors. Have them look for words that are repeated or given special emphasis, and to pay special attention to connecting words . Sometimes the major differences between whole theologies hang on these connections,;John Piper says.

Make Lists In 2 Peter 1:5-9, we find a list of virtues we should combine:

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

What Are The 12 Fruits Of The Spirit

How to Study Your Bible for Kids DVD Based on the book by Kay Arthur and Janna Arndt

The fruit of the Spirit are character qualities that you can expect to find within each believer. There are many references to fruit in the Bible, with a general overview being that good trees bear good fruit. You can find these spiritual fruits in Galatians 5:22-23. Most Christians know the fruit of the Spirit to include: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. However, the Catholic Church has included three additional fruits of the Spirit: long-suffering, modesty, and chastity. Use whatever version youre comfortable with!;
