What The Bible Says About Being Calm

Staying Calm Comes From Trusting That God Cares

What does the Bible say about being anxious?

Suddenly, as they were crossing the lake, a ferocious tempest arose, with violent winds and waves that were crashing into the boat until it was all but swamped.

But Jesus was calmly sleeping in the stern, resting on a cushion. So they shook him awake, saying, Teacher, dont you even care that we are all about to die! Fully awake, he rebuked the storm and shouted to the sea, Hush! Calm down! All at once the wind stopped howling and the water became perfectly calm.Mark 4:37-39 TPT

Have you ever felt swamped? Have you ever felt like waves are crashing all around you?

Thats what the disciples felt as waves crashed into their boat and swamped them with water. The disciples felt overwhelmed with fear, as we see a few verses later:

Then he turned to his disciples and said to them, Why are you so afraid? Havent you learned to trust yet? But they were overwhelmed with fear and awe and said to one another, Who is this man who has such authority that even the wind and waves obey him? Mark 4:40-41 TPT

The disciples were afraid because they didnt trust that Jesus cared about them. It wasnt the waves and the storm that caused their fear it was their lack of trust in Gods care for them.

  • What do you think it means to be overwhelmed by fear?
  • Do you trust that God cares about you? Why or why not?
  • How do you think trusting God cares about you would help you respond differently to the storms of life?

Need A Bible Verse To Calm Your Nerves

Here are 17. Go big.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

In God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

You Say God Is With Me Why Don’t I Feel Him

Second, this is where faith comes in: Faith is not based on feelings. Our faith is based on the fact that God came to earth in Jesus, died for our sins, rose from the dead and even today reigns as Lord over all. Nothing can change that truth. Not feelings, not a bad day, not an argument with a friend. Nothing.

It is O.K. to;feel;things. God created us in His image and as emotional beings. We can be honest with God about how we feel. However, dont let what you are;feeling keep you from believing the truth of Gods word. Remember, as strong and as fluctuating as your feelings may be, Gods Word is truer than anything you feel and truer than anything you experience. The Bible has withstood the test of time and never changes . Beyond the verses on this page, here are more truths you can hold onto when times are tough: Loving God in Painful Times

The bible talks about stress and worry many times. Over and over again, Jesus tells us not to be worried or anxious about our lives. What we will eat, or what we will wear, even what tomorrow will bring.;

We are to give our worries to Him, because He walks through things with us.;

Powerful Bible Scriptures On Anger

Anger can be found in God’s Word over 200 times! Here is a list we compiled of the 16 most powerful scriptures on anger:

Proverbs 29:11;-;A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

Psalm 37:8Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

Proverbs 14:29;-;He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

James 1:20;-;For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.Ephesians 4:26;-;Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:Proverbs 15:1;-;A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.James 1:19;-;Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:Ephesians 4:31;-;Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:Proverbs 19:11;-;The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.Ecclesiastes 7:9;-;Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

What The Bible Says

Concern about past misdeeds: Before becoming Christians, some people in the first century were drunkards, extortioners, sexually immoral, and thieves. Rather than dwell on their past, they changed their ways and trusted in Gods great mercy, which he extends willingly. With you there is true forgiveness, so that you may be held in awe, says Psalm 130:4.

Uncertainty about tomorrow: Never be anxious about the next day, said Jesus Christ, for the next day will have its own anxieties. His point? Address todays concerns. Do not compound them by bringing tomorrows forward, which can cloud judgment and lead to rash decisions. Also keep in mind that many anxieties may later prove to be unwarranted.

Money worries: A wise man once prayed: Give me neither poverty nor riches. Instead, he sought contentmenta feeling that merits Gods approval. At Hebrews 13:5, we read: Let your way of life be free of the love of money, while you are content with the present things. For has said: I will never leave you, and I will never abandon you. Unlike money, which canand doesfail, God never fails those who trust in him and lead a simple life.

I have not seen anyone righteous abandoned, nor his children looking for bread.

I think a storm is an accurate depiction of what many of us are facing in this season. Feeling pushed around by winds of life, out of control while the waves of our circumstances come crashing in, blinded by the unknown, and flooded by fear.

In these seasons we cant help but consume ourselves with the question When will this pass?, How long will this last? and When will this storm be over?

As Ive thought of how I want to personally respond to storms in my life, I cant help but think of Jesus calming the storm in Matthew 8:23-27. His actions and the disciples response holds a lot of wisdom and hope to offer anyone navigating a storm right now. It reads:

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

Give Your Anxiety To God

Once sin entered the world, God knew life was not going to be easy, but He promised he wouldnt leave us to navigate things on our own. He tells us to hand our anxious thoughts to Him.

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything,;but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding,;will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:7;;Cast all your anxiety on him;because he cares for you.

Matthew 6:25-34; Therefore I tell you, do not worry;about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?;Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.;Are you not much more valuable than they?;;Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.;I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled;and do not be afraid.

Psalm 46:10 Surrender your anxiety! Be silent and stop your striving and you will see that I am God. I am the God above all the nations, and I will be exalted throughout the whole earth.
