Bible Verses About Tax Collectors

What Does the Bible Say about Taxes? by David Barton

Tax collectors were evil, greedy, and corrupt people who charged far more than what was owed. These people were deceitful and unpopular just like how the IRS is very unpopular today.

What does the Bible say?

1. Luke 3:12-14 Some tax collectors came to be baptized. They asked him, Teacher, what should we do? He told them, Dont collect more money than you are ordered to collect. Some soldiers asked him, And what should we do? He told them, Be satisfied with your pay, and never use threats or blackmail to get money from anyone.

2. Luke 7:28-31 I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is! When they heard this, all the peopleeven the tax collectorsagreed that Gods way was right, for they had been baptized by John. But the Pharisees and experts in religious law rejected Gods plan for them, for they had refused Johns baptism. To what can I compare the people of this generation? Jesus asked. How can I describe them

They were considered bad

4. Matthew 11:18-20 Why do I say people are like that? Because John came, not eating like other people or drinking wine, and people say, He has a demon inside him. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and people say, Look at him! He eats too much and drinks too much wine. Hes a friend of tax collectors and other sinners. But wisdom is shown to be right by what it does.

One Bride For Seven Brothersmatthew 2: 23

23 The same day Sadducees came to him and asked him, 24 ?Teacher, Moses said, ?If a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and father children for his brother.? 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children he left his wife to his brother. 26 The second did the same, and the third, down to the seventh. 27 Last of all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her.? 29 Jesus answered them, ?You are deceived, because you don?t know the scriptures or the power of God. 30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 Now as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, 32 ?I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?? He is not the God of the dead but of the living!? 33 When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching .

Their argument was logical, even if it was fatally flawed. They begin by addressing Jesus as ?teacher,? and then they cite the instruction of Moses regarding levirate marriage246 from Deuteronomy 25:5. Levirate marriage was designed to insure that a deceased Israelite would have offspring .

??I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?? He is not the God of the dead but of the living!?

When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching .250

Why Should I Tithe

The Bible tells us that tithing is a way to show that we trust God with our lives and our finances. Ready for a truth bomb? Tithing isnt for Gods benefit. He doesnt need our money. Instead, tithing is meant for our benefit because sacrificing a portion of our income reminds us to rely on God to meet our needs. Plus it makes us more aware of the needs of others too.

In fact, supporting the needs of pastors and the work of the local church is one of the main purposes of tithing. Tithing helps your local church actively be the church by helping others.

Giving encourages a grateful and generous spirit and can help steer us away from being greedy or loving money too much. Plus, being outrageously generous is a blast!

The Great Debate: Death And Taxes

Matthew 22:15-33240

15 Then the Pharisees went out and planned together to entrap him with his own words. 16 They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying, ?Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You do not court anyone?s favor because you show no partiality. 17 Tell us then, what do you think? Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?? 18 But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said, ?Hypocrites! Why are you testing me? 19 Show me the coin used for the tax.? So they brought him a denarius. 20 Jesus said to them, ?Whose image is this, and whose inscription?? 21 They replied, ?Caesar?s.? He said to them, ?Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar?s, and to God the things that are God?s.? 22 Now when they heard this they were stunned, and they left him and went away.

Engaging Views And Analysis From Outside Contributors On The Issues Affecting Society And Faith Today

CP VOICES do not necessarily reflect the views of The Christian Post. Opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

Benjamin Franklin once wrote that in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.

The Bible tells us that a day is appointed for all of us to die . But, there is also appointed a day for us all to pay taxes, it seems. For Americans, its April 15. But recent circumstances changed that.

In 2018, Tuesday, April 17, was Tax Day since April 15 fell on a Sunday and April 16 is Emancipation Day. Then, two years later, the date was extended by three months to July 15 due to the escalating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The federal government had never extended the deadline before then. The Internal Revenue Service announced later that year that there would not be another blanket filing delay.

Even after indicating as late as mid-February this year that the tax deadline would not be extended, the Treasury Department and IRS officially announced that the filing due date would be automatically extended from April 15 to May 17, 2021.

Taxes appear to be certain. The date not so much.

Why pay taxes?

We live in a transactional world. For every cause, there is an effect. If we want to have Medicare and Medicaid, a national defense, and other services, there is a cost. And after a year living under a pandemic that affected the national economy for all Americans, we most likely will see a greater effect.

Jesus way is different.

Transactional Religion Vs Transformational Relationship

Christians and Debt: Is it a sin?

In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis observes:

The ordinary idea which we all have before we become Christians is this. We take as starting point our ordinary self with its various desires and interests. We then admit that something elsecall it morality or decent behavior, or the good of societyhas claims on this self: claims which interfere with its own desires. What we mean by being good is giving in to those desires. Some of the things the ordinary self wanted to do turn out to be what we call wrong: well, we must give them up. Other things, which the self did not want to do, turn out to be what we call right: well, we shall have to do them. But we are hoping all the time that when all the demands have been met, the poor natural self will still have some chance, and some time, to get on with its own life and do what it likes. In fact, we are very like an honest man paying his taxes. He pays them all right, but he does hope that there will be enough left over for him to live on.

Jesus way is different.

Our Lord told his followers, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me . Gods word calls us to seek the Lord and his strength seek his presence continually! .

If the Bible clearly calls us to live unconditionally for and with our Lord, where do we get the idea that we can separate Sunday from Monday and the spiritual from the secular?

The answer is in our cultural genes.

Now, thats good news!

Render Unto Caesar: What Jesus Was Actually Saying

by ORBC Family | Jul 5, 2019 | Faith, What We Believe

In Matthew 22, we read that a group of Pharisees confronted Jesus and asked for a yes or no answer on whether it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, the Roman emperor. Jesus responded by asking whose face was engraved on the coins used to pay the taxes. When they answered it was Caesars face, Jesus replied with the now-famous verse, Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesars and to God the things that are Gods .

This short story about paying taxes has been interpreted in multiple different ways, none of them very satisfactory. Nearly every political viewpoint has attempted to justify themselves using this verse. However, the ultimate explanation is far less about taxes and more about how we relate to the government vs. how we relate to God. A closer examination of this story will reveal its true meaning.

Generosity: The Sheep And The Goats

You know the difference. There are the sheep, and there are the stubborn onesthose who refuse to follow the masters lead. Goats are very, very stubborn. They use their heads to butt and will not be corralled. Jesus essentially said, Dont be the goat. Be the sheepthose who obey their Shepherd by feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, clothing the naked, visiting the prisoner, tending the sick, welcoming the alien, and taking care of the less fortunate.

God makes this aspect of his economy very personal. As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me . He said, in essence, You did those things unto Me. I was hungry, and you fed Me.

As believers, we should aspire to live as sheep who follow the Shepherd. Sheep are generous, giving away their number one product every yeartheir wool. They are sheared to near nakedness year after year and just keep giving and giving. In fact, their entire lives are ones of giving until, ultimately, they are sacrificed and consumed as Jesus was. I think thats why he calls us sheep. He wants us to be sacrificially generous with what he provides.

So, how do we tie lordship, stewardship, and generosity together?

When we acknowledge him as Lord of our lives and multiply the resources he provides, we have something to share. We are enabled to give to those who need help. This is the system he designed. It is the economy that carries his blessings to the lost and hurting.

What Does The Bible Really Say About Taxes

Benjamin Franklin once said, In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. While there may be some other things in life that are certain, Franklin certainly was not far off with this statement. But are taxes biblical? To what extent can a government reasonably tax its people? Perhaps the Bible can shine some light on this issue.

Taxes in the Old Testament

It is always prudent to look at Israel for direction on Gods intention for how a government should operate. While there are some things today that did not exist back then, the Mosaic Law established parameters by which the nation would function with God as its Head. At a quick glance one might argue that Israel did not pay taxes and therefore taxes are not necessary. However, the people of Israel did give of their livestock, money, harvests, etc. for the ministry of the temple, festivals, and the like. The tithe requirement also was established. While these are not taxes per se, they are sacrifices made by the people of Israel for corporate functions and provisions for the poor . And they were not voluntary.

Fast-forward a few hundred years to when Israel asked for a king . Samuel warned the people of Israel that a king would take of their possessions and make them his own, taking a 10th of their grain and livestock, as well as taking their land and other resources.

What Does It Mean When Jesus Says My Yoke Is Easy And My

Whizolosophy

Apr 26, 2021 ·As the apostle John says, For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome . This is what Jesus says in Matthew 11:30. His yoke is easy and His burden light. Now, we might think that there is really no difference between the commandments of Jesus and the Jewish Law.

The Hebrew Bible And The Poor

The Hebrew Bible has extensive regulations that require the wealthy to set aside for the poor a portion of the crops that they grow.

The Bibles Book of Leviticus states that the needy have a right to the leftovers of the harvest. Farmers are also prohibited from reaping the corners of their fields so that the poor can access and use for their own food the crops grown there.

In Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Bible, there is the requirement that every three years, 10 percent of a persons produce should be given to foreigners, the fatherless and widows.

Helping the poor is a way of paying rent to God, who is understood to actually own all property and who provides the rain and sun needed to grow crops. In fact, every seventh year, during the sabbatical year, all debts are forgiven and everything that grows in the land is made available freely to all people. Then, in the great jubilee, celebrated every 50 years, property returns to its original owner. This means that, in the biblical model, no one can permanently hold onto something that finally belongs to God.

A Lesson From Two Tax Collectors In The Bible

Is it Morally Right to Claim My Tithe on My Taxes?

Taxes were handled differently in Jesus’ time. Instead of issuing payment to the IRS, you paid directly to a local tax collector, who arbitrarily decided what you were going to pay. Tax collectors did not receive a salary. They got their pay by charging people more than they owed. These men routinely cheated citizens and didnt care how they felt about it.

Levi, who became the apostle Matthew, was a customs official in Capernaum who taxed imports and exports based on his own judgment. The Jews hated him because he worked for Rome and betrayed his countrymen.

Zacchaeus was another tax collector mentioned by name in the Gospels. The chief tax collector for the Jericho district, he was notorious for his dishonesty. Zacchaeus was also a short man, who forgot his dignity one day and climbed a tree so he could observe Jesus of Nazareth better.

Crooked as these two tax collectors were, a critical lesson emerges from their stories in the Bible. Neither of these greedy men worried about the cost of obeying Jesus. Neither asked what was in it for them. When they met the Savior, they simply followed, and Jesus changed their lives forever.

Jesus is still changing lives today. No matter what we have done or how tarnished our reputation, we can receive the forgiveness of God.
