Why Did I Dream About A Snake? | What Do Snakes Represent? | Biblical Dream Interpretation

I was taught by a rabbi that when reading the Bible, it is critical to ask good questions. We need to keep our eyes peeled and observant to see all that God wants to highlight to us in the text repetitions, seemingly unnecessary details and to ask good questions of it. For those of us who have the advantage of knowing God personally through his Messiah, we can also count on the help of the Holy Spirit to guide and teach us.

What To Do If You See A Snake

Leave it alone. Snakes are generally shy and will not attack unless provoked, so its best to leave them be. If you see a snake inside your home, get all people and pets out of the room immediately. Shut the door and fill the gap underneath with a towel, then call a professional snake catcher for assistance.

Other Examples Of Snakes In The Bible

When it comes to the Bible, snakes arent always depicted as evil and fiery creatures.

In fact, serpents are sometimes have different analogies of medicine and wisdom throughout The Bible.

Here are some examples:

They will pick up serpents with their hands and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.

Mark 16:18

In the above verse, snakes are referenced as a form of medicine and healing.

Snakes represent a form of immunity. Thus, this verse doesnt deduce snakes as evil or sinful.

Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

Matthew 10:16

This is the most directly positive quote about snakes in The Bible. Here, serpents are symbolized as a metaphor for intelligent.

Be wise as serpents implies that snakes are very smart creatures. This verse is basically saying that we are all at risk of wolves in the world, so we need to be innocent yet on our toes, smart like a snake. How interesting! Really, who knew that snakes have a parallel to being wise and having smarts?

Serpents In The Bible

Serpents are referred to in both the Hebrew Bible and theNew Testament. The symbol of a serpent or snake played important roles in religious and cultural life of ancient Egypt, Canaan, Mesopotamia and Greece. The serpent was a symbol of evil power and chaos from the underworld as well as a symbol of fertility, life and healing.

N , Hebrew for “snake”, is also associated with divination, including the verb form meaning “to practice divination or fortune-telling”. N occurs in the Torah to identify the serpent in the Garden of Eden. Throughout the Hebrew Bible, it is also used in conjunction with seraph to describe vicious serpents in the wilderness. The tannin, a dragon monster, also occurs throughout the Hebrew Bible. In the Book of Exodus, the staves of Moses and Aaron are turned into serpents, a n for Moses, a tannin for Aaron. In the New Testament, the Book of Revelation makes use of ancient serpent and the Dragon several times to identify Satan or the devil . The serpent is most often identified with the hubristic Satan, and sometimes with Lilith.

The story of the Garden of Eden and the fall of man represents a tradition among the Abrahamic religions, with a presentation more or less symbolical of certain moral and religious truths.

The Hebrew Meaning Of The Mysterious Serpent

Snake Symbolism: What Serpents Mean in Our World

The third chapter of the Book of Genesis tells the story of the sin of the Garden of Eden. It opens with the following words:

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made

The serpent is one of the most intriguing animals to be found in the Hebrew Bible. According to some Bible commentators, in the story of Adam and Eve, it represents the evil inclination. Those Bible commentators usually based their assumption on the words of the Prophet Isaiah, which includes the serpent within the list of the THREE demonic animals which are mentioned in his prophecy of the end of times:

In that day, the LORD will punish with his sword, his fierce, great and powerful sword, Leviathan the gliding SERPENT, Leviathan the coiling serpent he will slay the monster of the sea.

Having said that, it is important to mention that the serpent can be found in the Hebrew Bible also in positive references or neutral at a minimum such as in the case of the bronze snake as can be found in the Book of Numbers:

The people came to Moses and said, We sinned when we spoke against the LORD and against you. Pray that the LORD will take the snakes away from us. So Moses prayed for the people. The LORD said to Moses, Make a snake and put it up on a pole anyone who is bitten canlook at it and live.

What is the connection between the serpent in Genesis and Isaiah to the snake in Numbers, you ask?

Understanding The Symbolism Of A Serpent

Adam and Eve Genesis 3 Explained | Meaning of the Serpent | Bible Meaning

Snakes are highly symbolic creatures. Theyre ingrained in U.S. culture, in particular, because of our shared religious heritage. In the Bible, snakes take on many meanings.

The most obvious is the serpent that deceived Eve and tempted her to eat the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge. This snake is related to feelings of temptation and sex, questioned faith and something coming between you and your religion.

Throughout the Bible, serpents are used in negative imagery. In the Gospel of Matthew, John the Baptist calls the Pharisees a brood of vipers. Jesus used similar terms in Matthew 23:33, saying to them: Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

This same connection between snakes and dishonesty and low morals has continued until today. Call somebody a snake, and youd be calling them a deceitful, dishonest low life.

But that imagery isnt all there is to snakes. If you dream about snakes, thats just one possible meaning you could take. That explains why some people are scared of snakes and others arent worried about them at all.

May The Words Of Holy Scripture Be Your Comfort And Your Strength

We cannot do more than to give our best to the Heavenly Father as we present our bodies as living sacrifices . It sometimes involves much pain and suffering for righteousness sake. But whatever suffering we are asked to endure will be well worth it in knowing that God is pleased.

âAs for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live in order to please God,as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.â

As Christians, we have a guidebook, as well as a guide, to show us how to live. The more we follow the instructions left by our guide, the more we begin to understand the plans, and influence others to do the same.

âAnd without faithit is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.â

How To Interpret Snakes In Dreams

When it comes to interpreting dreams we must always remember the key source of our interpretation.

Then Joseph said to them, Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.

Genesis 40:8

With dreams, the interpretation can be very personal to the dreamer. Its not always cut and dry and there is no real formula. A symbol can mean one thing this time and another thing another time.

But understanding Biblical symbolism is important for us as we seek out the interpretation. It grounds us in the Word and helps us piece things together that the Holy Spirit is showing us.

These are some key steps you can take to help you interpret a dream with snake in it.

  • Write the dream out and make note of anything prominent in the dream.
  • Look into scripture about certain symbols you see in the dream. Take notes and if something is quickened in your spirit than write that down.
  • Begin to pray about the dream and ask God to bring clarity about what the snake symbolizes. If you sense anything from the Lord jot it down.
  • Pray over what you feel the dream and the snake mean and take action if you feel the Lord is leading to you.
  • For me personally when I have had dreams about a snake or snakes they tend to be a warning that I am being spiritually attacked. I am either believing lies or being tempted in an area of my life.

This would lead me into a time of prayer to break things off lies and take authority over the situation. I ask God to protect me in this season and to keep me watchful.

    Adam Eve And The Serpent

Its ironic that the Bible story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden is so often in the cross-hairs of the debate between science and faith according to the Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg, the story itself is, in fact, about that very debate.

The Writings say that the man placed in the Garden of Eden represents a group of prehistoric people who lived in a state of love to the Lord and communion with heaven. They were pure and innocent, with wisdom coming to them as the fruit came from the trees of Eden. The Writings call this the Most Ancient Church, and it was as close as weve ever been to heaven on earth.

People of that time were aware, on an ongoing basis, that life flowed into them from the Lord, and was not their own. They were aware that their thoughts came from the Lord, and their affections they not only knew, but also felt, that they did not exist from themselves. For many generations they embraced this blissfully, but eventually they began to feel a tug toward more of a sense of self. They didnt want to be just recipients of life they wanted to be alive from themselves. This is represented in the idea that it was not good that the man should be alone. And all the thoughts and affections of their exalted state represented by naming the animals did not satisfy that urge.
