An Old Melody For The Lords Prayer

The churches of the east have sung the Lords prayer since ancient times. And they have different versions of the melody for it. I say the melody because both versions fit the words to the same rhythm in the same way. But the west Syriac churches sing it to a harmonic minor melody, while the east Syriac churches sing it to a melody in the Phrygian mode.

Personally, I think this sung version of the prayer is well worth learning so you can speak or sing the words which Jesus taught his disciples. We sing it en famille once a week, on Sunday evening. And now my kids can sing it by heart. I think that is a beautiful thing for them to have learned while they are still young.

Aramaicthe Ancient Language Of Israel

But Aramaic was Jesuss default language, the language of his heart. You might think that is strange. Surely the son of God should have Hebrew as his first language. But its not so much a departure from tradition as a return to the source. For, remember, Aramaic was also Abrahams native language. Moses even taught the Israelites to say, My father was a wandering Aramean . So Aramaic is an ancient and authentic language of the Israelites. And so there is no surprise that the son of God should have it as his own tongue.

So when Jesus spoke to his disciples, he spoke Aramaic. And when he spoke to the crowds beside Lake Galilee, he spoke Aramaic. And when he spoke in their synagogues, he spoke Aramaic . It follows then that when he taught the Lords prayer, he taught it in Aramaic.

The Lord’s Prayer Bible Scriptures Verses:

Matthew 6:9-13 – “This, then, is how you should pray: ” ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Luke 11:2-4 – “He said to them, “When you pray, say: ” ‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ “

Our Father Prayer From Scripture

Pray then in this way: Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And don’t bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one. For if you forgive others of their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you don’t forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses .

The Importance Of Forgiveness

A further breakdown of the prayer, Our Father, reveals a message about the importance of forgiveness.

The prayer says that Gods forgiveness of us is dependent upon our forgiveness of others.

My interpretation is that forgiveness by God is already given. In fact forgiveness by God is not even required because God is love and does not condemn.

However, God’s unconditional love is beyond our comprehension. It is only when we forgive the other person we come to understand and receive the love and forgiveness of God which waits for us.

Meditation And Contemplative Prayer

A broad, three stage characterization of prayer begins with vocal prayer, then moves on to a more structured form in terms of meditation, then reaches the multiple layers of contemplation, or intercession.

Christian meditation is a structured attempt to get in touch with and deliberately reflect upon the revelations of God. The word meditation comes from the Latin word meditr, which has a range of meanings including to reflect on, to study and to practice. Christian meditation is the process of deliberately focusing on specific thoughts and reflecting on their meaning in the context of the love of God.

Christian meditation aims to heighten the personal relationship based on the love of God that marks Christian communion.

At times there may be no clear-cut boundary between Christian meditation and Christian contemplation, and they overlap. Meditation serves as a foundation on which the contemplative life stands, the practice by which someone begins the state of contemplation. In contemplative prayer, this activity is curtailed, so that contemplation has been described as “a gaze of faith”, “a silent love”.

The Our Father The Lords Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.Amen.

Lord, teach us to pray. This is what the Saviors disciples asked him. Of course, any answer coming from him would be a perfect answer. His answer was what we call the Our Father or the Lords Prayer. This prayer is a perfect model of how we should pray and for what things we should pray, and in what order.

First off, this prayer teaches us that we should desire the glory and honor of God as the first intention of our prayer, no matter what we may be praying for. Thus, we pray that Gods name be honored and held holy. Then we pray that his will be done as perfectly among us on earth as his angels accomplish it in his heavenly kingdom. There would be no point in praying unless we wanted Gods will to be done. Nothing would be ultimately helpful to us if it were against his will, even if it is what we wanted.

Then, after these universal intentionsfor Gods glory and for his willwe pray for the things we need in order to glorify him and be united to him. Our daily bread means all that we need to serve him here and now: first of all, his supernatural gift of his Body in the Holy Eucharist, and then the necessities of life we need each day.

The Lord’s Prayer can be found in two places in the New Testament section of the bible, as recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The wording as it appears in Matthew forms the basis of this popular prayer. :-

Fourth Petition Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Our daily bread in this instance does not only mean nutritional nourishment, but all the nourishment life requires both material and spiritual. In the world today which is ravaged by world hunger this petition calls on Christians to take responsibility towards the poor, to share with love both our spiritual and material goods.

It also addresses the spiritual hunger of the world, and we as Christians are supposed to proclaim the good news the Body of Christ received in the Holy Communion.

Our Lord The Father Forgives Us

God reigns from Heaven with compassion and justice. His will is that we praise Him and love one another. We should thank Him endlessly for all He does for us and remember Him in everything we do.

When we say the Lord’s Prayer, we are surrendering to God’s will selflessly. It is a means to humble ourselves as we ask God to help us follow His will, not our own. We can then live a life that glorifies Him and reflects compassion and justice toward others.

Comparisons With Other Prayer Traditions

The book The Comprehensive New Testament, by T.E. Clontz and J. Clontz, points to similarities between elements of the Lord’s Prayer and expressions in writings of other religions as diverse as the Dhammapada, the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Golden Verses, and the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It mentions in particular parallels in 1 Chronicles.

Rabbi Aron Mendes Chumaceiro says that nearly all the elements of the prayer have counterparts in the Jewish Bible and Deuterocanonical books: the first part in Isaiah 63 and Ezekiel 36 and 38 , the second part in Obadiah 1 and 1 Samuel 3 , the third part in Proverbs 30 , the fourth part in Sirach 28 . “Deliver us from evil” can be compared with Psalm 119 .

Chumaceiro says that, because the idea of God leading a human into temptation contradicts the righteousness and love of God, “Lead us not into temptation” has no counterpart in the Jewish Bible/Christian Old Testament. However, the word “ÏειÏαÏμÏÏ”, which is translated as “temptation”, can also be translated as “test” or “trial”, making evident the attitude of someone’s heart, and in the Old Testament God tested Abraham, and told David, “Go, number Israel and Judah,” an action that David later acknowledged as sin and the testing of Job in the Book of Job.

The Meaning Of The Lords Prayer

In the Lord’s Prayer, we summarize our faith and what the Gospels teach us.

Even though many people in the Catholic Church and other Christian sects have repeated this prayer hundreds or even thousands of times, many have never thought about what the words really mean.

Stopping and reflecting on the words we are saying is important for prayers. How we recite them carries great power.

The Lord’s Prayer should be seen as a model for how to pray.

The breakdown is as follows.

“Our Father in Heaven” teaches us to pray to the Father. “Holy be your name” means we are to worship and praise God.

When we pray, “your kingdom come, your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven,” we are praying for God’s plan in our lives and the world rather than our own. Not our desires, but God’s will are what we should pray for.

In “give us today our daily bread,” we’re encouraged to pray for the things we need instead of what we want.

In âForgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors,â God reminds us to confess our sins to Him and to turn from them. He also tells us to forgive others in return for God’s forgiveness of us.

In the conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer, it says, “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.” Here, we are requesting that we be protected from Satanâs attacks.

As a result, we give God glory for all that He’s done and all that Heâs given us.

When To Say The Lords Prayer

Many people say the Our Father prayer as a daily prayer either in the morning or in the evening. Most Christian congregations say the prayer once during the service.

I say this prayer whenever Im feeling lost or without purpose. The prayer is so simple and short yet has such a nice flow to it. Whenever and wherever you say it, may God be with you when you do.

The Context Of The Prayer

We find Matthews recounting of Jesus delivery of the Lords Prayer set amidst Jesus teachings against hypocritical religious acting. Jesus was contrasting the way the false religious leaders acted with how true followers of God should behave. Jesus had cautioned His disciples not to call attention to themselves in prideful ways when they went about living out their faith. He said that the false religious teachers like to call attention to themselves, instead of pointing to God, when they did things like giving to the needy or praying . After Jesus had finished describing the wrong way to pray, He illustrated the right way to pray by using this model prayer.

Of course, if this prayer is simply memorized and repeated without a heartfelt commitment and earnest sincerity, it becomes the same sort of hypocritical mumbling that Jesus had just condemned. This prayer was never meant to be mimicked it was to serve as an outline, or guide, for the sincere devotee to God. As we will see, this prayer requires an honest love for God on the part of the one praying for it to be anything more than a superstitious poem that will not even reach the ceiling.

And Forgive Us Our Debts As We Forgive Our Debtors

The King James Version of the Lords Prayer asks God to forgive our debts, as we forgive our debtors .

When we think of the word debt today, the first thing that probably comes to mind is a loan or borrowing money.

However, the verse is not referring to financial debts. Instead it symbolizes righteous or moral debts. More simply put, Jesus is referring to our past sins.

In the Lords prayer we are asking God to forgive our sins after we forgive the sins of others.

Remember, we must first forgive others for their sins or mistakes. Then, we can ask God to forgive our sins. Not the other way around.

Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

If you read other commentary on the Lords Prayer, the verse give us this day our daily bread is often interpreted in many different ways.

In Exodus 16:4 God tells Moses that each morning bread will rain down from heaven to feed the children of Israel who are hungry. They are to only collect as much bread as they need for that day and keep none of it for the next day. This is the daily bread Jesus is referring to.

I believe the real meaning of this verse is that we must always rely on God to provide for us. As we grow spiritually, we do not become independent and no longer need God to provide for us. As we grow closer to God we actually need him more than ever.

What Is The Difference Between The Lord’s Prayer In Matthew And Luke

If you’ve read the Gospels, you may have noticed that two of these books contain the Lord’s prayer. We have the Matthew version above. Let’s include the ESV version from Luke to see if we can spot any differences.

“Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.

We notice some of the wording has some slight differences. But really, they contain the same basic idea. They both have a greeting in which they praise the name of the Lord and ask for his kingdom to come. They ask for their daily needs to be met. And they remind themselves to forgive others as Christ has forgiven them. Finally, both conclude with the supplication that God delivers us from evil and temptation. The second version doesn’t have the wording of evil, but we can use the contextual clues of Matthew to understand it’s probably implied.

The concluding doxology is often added at the end of the prayer by Protestants and, in a slightly different form, by churches of the , among whom the prayer proper is usually recited by the cantors and congregation in unison, and the doxology by the priest as the conclusion of the prayer.
