Located on Cordova Street in the Historic District, the synagogue traces its heritage to the late 1980s when the congregations first families came from Russia and Eastern Europe to settle in St. Augustine. The synagogue was dedicated in 1923 and has served its congregation for almost 100 years.

Father Miguel Oreilly House Museum

One of the oldest structures in St. Augustine is the Father Miguel OReilly House Museum.

Constructed in 1691, the house was converted to a Catholic parish rectory in 1785. The houses former owner, a priest from Ireland, ensured that it was used as a center of religion and education. Since 2003, the museum is open to the public and welcomes donations.

The OReilly House was once the parish rectory for the colony. The house was built by a priest from Ireland, Father Miguel OReilly, who was also the parishs principal pastor during the Second Spanish Period.

He was born in Ireland and trained in Spain to become a priest. In 1777, he was sent to St. Augustine and soon became chaplain to the Hibernian Regiment.

Later, he was given responsibility for the colony. He became an excellent teacher and mentor for a man who would later be awarded Sainthood: Father Felix Varela.

Aside from being a historical landmark, the OReilly House is a place of religious importance. It was built by Father Miguel OReilly and was gifted to a religious order devoted to education. The Sisters of St. Joseph, which arrived in St. Augustine in 1866, now run a museum there.

Many people have claimed to feel a special energy on the second floor of the OReilly House Museum.

The remains of Father Felix Varela were buried next to the OReilly House in the same cemetery. Their remains were then transferred to Cuba in 1912.

History And Art Of The Cathedral Basilica

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the oldest Catholic Church in the city and the oldest parish in the country. In 1565, Padre Lopez de Mendoza Grajales presented a cross to Pedro Menendez de Aviles as he stepped onto the banks of La Florida. Menendez kissed the base of the cross first, then kissed the base of the Spanish flag. Thus, the city of St. Augustine and the Parish of St. Augustine was founded in the same breath. The first Catholic mass in the Continental United States was then conducted.

However, its original structure only dates back to the 1700s, as its location changed during the Spanish and British Colonial periods of St. Augustine’s history until a permanent coquina structure was built in 1797, just south of La Plaza de la Constitución. Three of the walls in the Cathedral Basilica are the original coquina walls from 1797, which are two feet thick.

By 1870, the Catholic population of Florida had grown considerably and no longer could be managed by the Bishop in Savannah, Georgia. A parish church is made into a cathedral when it becomes the seat of power of a Bishop, who leads a Diocese. Father Augustin Verot was named the first Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine in 1870. His reign started a new era for the church, and the Diocese and Cathedral of St. Augustine thrived for a hundred years, overseeing several parish churches and schools for children.

The Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche At Mission Nombre De Dios

This small mission is a hidden gem worth a visit. A quiet walk along the beautiful grounds reveals the little chapel, covered in vines, a peaceful sanctuary for intimate worship. A National Pilgrimage site, the site traces its origins to the founding of the city of St. Augustine, Americas oldest city, when Pedro Menéndez de Aviles landed and proclaimed this site for Spain and the Church. The mission grounds include the Great Cross, the Rustic Altar, stations of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, a museum, and a gift shop. While visits are self-guided, the mission and shrine do offer tours for groups, as well as planning for retreats or pilgrimages.

Visiting The Cathedral Basilica

Guided tours are offered throughout the day, and visitors are welcome to light candles for loved ones at any time. Mass is celebrated at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Cathedral gift shop offers an array of religious items: rosaries, prayer books, bibles, medals, saint prayer cards, CDs, scapulars, and crucifixes. Tours of the Cathedral are offered daily. Please call 829-0620 to reserve a spot for you or your group.

History Of The Parish

St. Anastasia Catholic Churchs present church was dedicated on Sept. 26, 1999, by John J. Snyder, Bishop of St. Augustine. The church area is 26,000 sq. ft. with a seating capacity of 1,569. The design of our new church reflects the Spanish heritage of St. Augustine with its coquina exterior, Spanish tile roofs and the decorative stone facings. The liturgical design incorporates changes promulgated after Vatican II. A 57 ft. high bell tower graces the church and may be seen from miles away. The bell tower and is one of approximately 200 in the USA. The carillon evolved in the 16th Century in Europe the first was installed in the USA at the University of Notre Dame in 1856. A Time Capsule is located in the Altar Platform to be opened in the Year 2049 and contains local community and church memorabilia since 1985. The Angel window between the altar and the tabernacle chapel is of beveled glass and reflects light rays of the morning sun throughout the church.Other statistics include:

History Of Catholicism In St Augustine

St. Augustines architecture and streets named after famous explorers provide daily evidence of the Spanish influence in Americas oldest city. When Spain sent its fleet, they also delivered the Roman Catholic tradition to the New Worlds shores.

Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles was commissioned by King Philip II of Spain in 1564 to conquer Florida and eliminate the French Huguenot presence at Fort Caroline. Menendez commanded the great Spanish Treasure Fleet and brought with him four Catholic priests. One of them – Father Francisco Lopez de Mendoza Grajales – held the first Mass, founded the first mission, and was the first parish priest in the new world. His legacy is commemorated at the Mission Nombre de Dios with an eleven-foot statue, erected in the shadow of the Missions 208 foot tall Great Cross.

The Spanish fleet reached land on August 28th, St. Augustine of Hippos feast day. The new city was named for the saint and officially founded on September 8. Once Menendez secured the city for Spain and defeated the French, he began to evangelize to the Timucua natives, appointing soldiers he deemed fit to give religious instruction. Americas first Thanksgiving Mass was held at the Mission site. St. Francis Borgia sent a number of Jesuits to St. Augustine between 1566 and 1568 Franciscan missionaries arrived in 1577.

Dedicated to the memory of the first colony of Greek people who came to America in 1768 as part of the Andrew Turnbull New Smyrna Colony, St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine is an institution of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Located in the Avero House, the shrine consists of exhibits depicting the life of early Greeks in America and the development of the Greek Orthodox Church in the U.S. One of the most photogenic shrines, St. Photios Chapel includes a museum, gift shop and beautiful garden. The shrine is located on St. George Street and is open for self-guided tours from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily.
