In the 24th edition of Science and Health, up to the 33rd edition, Eddy admitted the harmony between and Christian Science. She also quoted certain passages from an English translation of the , but they were later removed. According to Gill, in the 1891 revision Eddy removed from her book all the references to which her editor, Reverend , had introduced. On this issue wrote:

Mrs. Eddy quoted certain passages from the English edition of the Bhagavad-Gita, but unfortunately, for some reason, those passages of the Gita were omitted in the 34th edition of the book, Science and Health … if we closely study Mrs. Eddy’s book, we find that Mrs. Eddy has incorporated in her book most of the salient features of Vedanta philosophy, but she denied the debt flatly.

Other writers, such as Jyotirmayananda Saraswati, have said that Eddy may have been influenced by ancient philosophy. The Damodar Singhal wrote:

The Christian Science movement in America was possibly influenced by India. The founder of this movement, Mary Baker Eddy, in common with the Vedantins, believed that matter and suffering were unreal, and that a full realization of this fact was essential for relief from ills and pains … The Christian Science doctrine has naturally been given a Christian framework, but the echoes of Vedanta in its literature are often striking.

History Of The Congregation

The congregation was organized in 1886 by . The congregation gave Stetson the lot adjacent to the Church on West 96th St, where she lived in a neo-Georgian house. Stetson’s house was demolished in 1930, replaced by a “mild Art Deco” apartment building designed by Thomas W. Lamb.

The congregation met in rented space before construction of the church.

Is It True That Christian Scientists Dont Take Medicine

Generally, a Christian Scientists first choice is to rely on prayer for healing, and in most cases, this means that a medical remedy is unnecessary. There is no biblical or church mandate to forgo medical intervention, nor do Christian Scientists believe that its Gods will that anyone suffer or die. A Christian Scientists decision to rely on prayer comes from an understanding trust in God, and from a conviction that Gods care continues under every circumstance.

What Is Christian Science

Christian Science is based on the teachings and healing practice of Christ Jesus. It was discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866. Christian Science teaches us that an understanding of Gods omnipotence and omnipresence can give us dominion over fear, evil, and hatred and how this heals us, protects us, and allows us to live our lives more peacefully and fully.

The present church was designed by Clark, Frey & Chambers, Architects, the firm of the well-known, modern architect Albert Frey. The church is now on the National Register of Historic Places. As you can see from the , the church’s Desert Modern Design reflects the colors and textures of its desert surroundings and becomes one with them.

In the words of the National Register, “The property embodies the distinctive characteristics of religious architecture associated with the modern movement as interpreted by Albert Frey for the desert environment of the Coachella Valley.”

The property was purchased in 1951, and construction on a new church building began in October 1956. The first church service was held on March 17, 1957. Dedication services for our church were held in December 1966, once the church was free of debt.

Our Christian Science Reading Room was first located in the original church ramada for several years. In December of 1947, it was moved to Palm Canyon Drive. Eventually, a new Christian Science Reading Room was specially built in 1979 at its present location of 235 South Palm Canyon Dr.

History Organization And Development

Christian Science emerged in late 19th-century America, when Darwinism, biblical criticism, and other secularizing influences weakened the supernaturalist structure of Protestant orthodoxy. Troubled Christians, divided between what Eddy called a stern Protestantism and a doubtful liberalism, were drawn to Christian Science because of the practice of spiritual healing and the promise of renewed faith.

Reared in a strict Congregationalist home in rural New Hampshire, Mary Baker broke with the hellfire determinism of her fathers stark Calvinist theology. Yet she retained from that heritage a Bible-centred, though somewhat unorthodox, piety that prevented her from accepting the attenuatedChristianity of Unitarianism and, later, of Transcendentalism. Personal misfortune and ill health contributed to Eddys preoccupation with the question of Gods responsibility for human suffering.

Eddys own search for health led her to experiment with various alternative healing methods, including homeopathy, hydrotherapy , and the therapeutic techniques of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, a charismatic healer from Maine. Her association with him from 1862 to 1865 strengthened her belief, acquired by her experiments with homeopathy, in the mental nature of disease. It also spurred her own search for the meaning of New Testament healing stories.

Membership Decline And Financial Setbacks

In spite of its early meteoric rise, church membership has declined over the past eight decades, according to the church’s former treasurer, J. Edward Odegaard. Though the Church is prohibited by the Manual from publishing membership figures, the number of branch churches in the United States has fallen steadily since World War II. In 2009, for the first time in church history, more new members came from Africa than the United States.

In 2005, The Boston Globe reported that the church was considering consolidating Boston operations into fewer buildings and leasing out space in buildings it owned. Church official Philip G. Davis noted that the administration and Colonnade buildings had not been fully used for many years and that vacancy increased after staff reductions in 2004. The church posted an $8 million financial loss in fiscal 2003, and in 2004 cut 125 jobs, a quarter of the staff, at the Christian Science Monitor. Conversely, Davis noted that “the financial situation right now is excellent” and stated that the church was not facing financial problems.

Starting In The Spring Of 1933

First Church of Christ Scientist

Christian Science has been a part of the Palm Springs community since the spring of 1933. A small group of Christian Scientists drove their cars out on the desert and held church services. These services so inspired visitors to Palm Springs that soon funds were donated to build an open ramada to hold the services. A lot was donated at 271 Ocotillo Ave. in appreciation of a healing. The first service was held in the new building in April 1934.

In March 1945, the group was recognized as a Christian Science Society by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. In October 1950, we became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Palm Springs.

Things You Should Know About Christian Science

The issue of religious exemptions for vaccine mandates has raised the profile of Christian Science, a group that previously helped push through similar exemptions in American jurisprudence. Yet despite Christian Sciences having been around for 142 years, most people dont know much about this small and declining religious movement.

Here are nine things you should know about Christian Science.

1. The science of Christian Science is spiritual healing.

Christian Science is a non-Christian sect that was created by New Englander . After being severely injured in 1866, Eddy turned to the Bible, where she claims to have discovered the laws of spiritual healing. In her view, spiritual healing isnt miraculous, but an effect of understanding Gods all-power and love. Eddy and two dozen of her followers were granted a charter by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1879 to found the Church of Christ . The group changed its name to the Church of Christ, Scientist in 1892.

2. Christian Scientists claim to have no doctrinesthough they do have six tenets.

When asked if Christian Scientists had a religious creed, Eddy replied, They have not, if by that term is meant doctrinal beliefs. Yet Eddy did offer six tenets that briefly summarize the teachings of Christian Science:

1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.

History Of The Building

In 2004 the building was sold to the Crenshaw Christian Center and the Christian Science congregation merged with the congregation of the Second Church of Christ, Scientist .

In June 2014, after almost ten years in the building, the Crenshaw Christian Center sold the building to 361 Central Park L.L.C. for $26 million. The new owner planned to convert the 47,000-square-foot structure to condominiums. However, the condominium plan was rejected by the zoning appears board. In January 2018 the Children’s Museum of Manhattan announced that it had acquired the building. The Museum plans to renovate the interior, retaining the columns in the sanctuary, but otherwise altering the space to make it a functional children’s playspace.

Study With Phineas Quimby

had become popular in New England and on October 14, 1861, Eddy’s husband at the time, Dr. Patterson, wrote to mesmerist , who reportedly cured people without medicine, asking if he could cure his wife. Quimby replied that he had too much work in , and that he could not visit her, but if Patterson brought his wife to him he would treat her. Eddy did not immediately go, instead trying the at Dr. Vail’s Hydropathic Institute, but her health deteriorated even further. A year later, in October 1862, Eddy first visited Quimby. She improved considerably, and publicly declared that she had been able to walk up 182 steps to the dome of city hall after a week of treatment. The cures were temporary, however, and Eddy suffered relapses.

Despite the temporary nature of the “cure”, she attached religious significance to it, which Quimby did not. She believed that it was the same type of healing that Christ had performed. From 1862 to 1865, Quimby and Eddy engaged in lengthy discussions about healing methods practiced by Quimby and others. She took notes on her own ideas on healing, as well as writing dictations from him and “correcting” them with her own ideas, some of which possibly ended up in the “Quimby manuscripts” that were published later and attributed to him. Despite Quimby not being especially religious, he embraced the religious connotations Eddy was bringing to his work, since he knew his more religious patients would appreciate it.
