How Many Resurrections In The Bible

What Is The Second Death

The Resurrection of the Dead – the 3 Mass Resurrections in the Bible, Rightly Divided

Those who are raised in the second resurrection will face judgement. They will die a final death that lasts forever.

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire .

The second death is the eternal consequence of being separated from God. You may have pictures in your mind of eternal torment and suffering for the lost sinners an eternal hell where fire burns the lost forever and ever.

But what does the Bible say? Those who die without a faith in Jesus will face eternal separation from God not eternal suffering.

If the wicked were tormented in hell forever, they would be immortal souls. The Scripture says God alone is immortal, and only those who choose redemption through Jesus will be granted eternal life .

the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see .

And when the lost die the second death, they will be like no more, like ash on the ground. They are destroyed forever, not forever burning.

The fire is an all-consuming fire. And when all wickedness has been destroyed, the fire will go out.

Behold, they are like stubble the fire consumes them they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. No coal for warming oneself is this, no fire to sit before! .

It was a devastating feeling for Jesus and He cried out just before He died:

Is It Scriptural To Give Visiting Pastors An Honorarium

l have a question pastor Guzik. why is it that Pastors are given honorarium when they visit and minister in churches. is it scriptural?

Galatians 6:6

Let him who is taught the word share in all good things with him who teaches.

1 Corinthians 9:11

If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things?

1 Timothy 5:17-18

Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. For the Scripture says, You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain, and, The laborer is worthy of his wages.

A Final Third Resurrection

There remains one other group of individuals to consider. Often referred to as the incorrigibly wicked, these are individuals who, in their physical lifetime, willfully and consciously reject Jesus Christ and choose to dismiss Gods way of living.

John briefly references this group. Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire . For those with knowledge who deliberately reject or ignore Gods calling, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation .

While sobering to contemplate, this third resurrection reflects Gods wisdom and mercy. In His mercy, God has determined that those who refuse to repent will not be condemned to an eternity of torture and misery. In keeping with His righteous judgment, those who wont repent and who choose to reject Christs redemptive, atoning sacrifice will be briefly restored to physical life and will experience a swift death .

From that time forward, there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away .

Did Rebecca Have Suicidal Thoughts While Pregnant With Her Twins

Did Rebecca have suicidal thoughts? Seems like she was experiencing a depression when her twins started fighting in the womb.

Were talking about the marriage of Isaac and Rebecca. Rebecca becomes pregnant, and there are twins in her womb. She is agitated because the twins are agitated theyre fighting and striving with one another in her womb. God explains to them that He has chosen the younger of the twins to be over the older of the twins, which went against the normal way that they did things in those days. Normally, the firstborn had the honor and birthright. There are places where God upset that order to be sure, but when He did, He was upsetting a normal order that existed.

I dont recall anything in the Genesis text that tells us that Rebecca had suicidal thoughts. Clearly, she was troubled, and no doubt somewhat anxious or depressed. I dont think thats a stretch to say. But I think all we have to go on is what the text itself says. I dont recall anything in the text that points to Rebecca being suicidal in this occasion, so I would have to say no. We want to be careful that we dont speak with confidence in places where the Scriptures themselves do not speak.

How Many People Did Jesus Resurrect In The Bible

The Resurrection of Jesus: Fact or Fiction?

Jesus was not the only person brought back, from death to life, by resurrection. There are clear accounts of resurrections in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. There were three individuals in the Old Testament, five individuals in the New Testament, and an unnumbered group of people who were resurrected from the grave following Jesus resurrection.

A Random Guy In Elishas Grave

In what might be the strangest resurrection in Scripture, a corpse tossed into the tomb of Elisha was brought back to life.

Yup. Thatâs right. It happened like this. A group of mourners were in the process of burying their friend when they heard some Moabite raiders approaching. Fearing for their lives, they quickly tossed the body out of sight. It landed in Elishaâs open tomb, and the two bodies connected. The dead fellow came back to life, a testament to the power of God that was at work through Elisha during his living years.

Widow Of Zarephath’s Son

During a time of great drought, the prophet Elijah the Tishbite had been lodging at the house of a widow in Zarephath, a pagan city in Phoenicia. Unexpectedly, the woman’s son grew sick and finally stopped breathing. She accused Elijah of bringing God’s wrath on her for her sin.

Carrying the boy to the upper room where he was staying, Elijah laid him on the bed and stretched himself out on the body three times. He cried out to God for the boy’s life to return. God heard Elijah’s prayers. The child’s life did come back, and Elijah carried him downstairs. The woman declared the prophet a man of God and his words to be the truth.

How Many Resurrections Are There In The Bible

Josiah asks:

How many resurrections are there in the Bible?

There are really two ways to ask this question.

  • How many people were raised from the dead in the Bible?
  • In how many events will all humanity receive their resurrection bodies?

First Way to Ask the Question: How many people were raised from the dead in the Bible?

Apart from Jesus, there are 8 specific people reported as raised from the dead, and one event where several people were raised without giving a specific number.

  • The widow of Zarapheths son
  • The Shunamite womans son
  • The man raised out of Elishas grave
  • The widow of Nains son
  • Jairuss daughter
  • Lazarus of Bethany
  • Unnumbered saints in Jerusalem at the death of Jesus

Yet all of these were not real resurrections because every one of these people would die again. They were brought back to life in the same corruptible body as before.

There is really only one true resurrection in the Bible that of Jesus, who is called the firstfruits of the resurrection . In our resurrection, we will be raised like Jesus.

Second Way to Ask the Question: In how many events will all humanity receive their resurrection bodies?

If the question is, how many resurrection events are there in the Bible, I would say either two or three, depending on how you count.

Remember that in John 5:28-29, Jesus promised that all humanity will be resurrected all humanity lives beyond this life. Resurrection isnt just something for the righteous it is also a fact for the wicked:

What Really Happens When We Die

How Many Resurrections Are There?

The Bible says those who have died know nothing. That means we arent aware of the passage of time after death. We arent aware of whats happening in the world.

Death is like a deep sleep.Your body and spirit rests as the breath of lifewhich makes body and soul one, and alivehas returned to God until the resurrection.

Whether youve lost a loved one or want to know what happens when you die, its a question that weighs on everyones mind at some point.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun .

and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it .

In the beginning God made man in the Garden of Eden from the dust of the earth. Then, He breathed the breath of life into Adams nostrils.

In that moment Adam became a living being.

Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature .

Notice the verse says Adam became a living creature when God breathed the breath of life into his nostrils. The King James Version says it this way:

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul .

the body apart from the spirit is dead .

Belief 2: Death And Resurrection

The wages of sin is death. But God, who alone is immortal, will grant eternal life to His redeemed. Until that day death is an unconscious state for all people. When Christ, who is our life, appears, the resurrected righteous and the living righteous will be glorified and caught up to meet their Lord. The second resurrection, the resurrection of the unrighteous, will take place a thousand years later.

Don’t Miss: St Peter’s Church Rome

Corinthians 1: 2627 5457

The last enemy to be destroyed is death. For God has put all things in subjection under his feet. But when it says, all things are put in subjection, it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him.

When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

Death is swallowed up in victory.O death, where is your victory?O death, where is your sting?

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.Read More

When believers are finally resurrected from the dead, the destruction of death will be complete.

Full List Of Resurrections In The Bible

Pin on RESURRECTION

I have previously discussed how many future resurrections there are in the Bible, focusing specifically on the theology behind resurrection. However, I also thought it would be helpful to list all of the resurrections that are mentioned in Scripture for reference.

  • Resurrection of the widows son in Zarephath
  • Resurrection of the Shunammites son
  • Resurrection of the man thrown into Elishas grave
  • Resurrection of Jairus daughter
  • Resurrection of the young man at Nain
  • Resurrection of Lazarus
  • Resurrection of unknown saints during the crucifixion
  • Resurrection of Christ
  • Resurrection of Tabitha/Dorcas
  • Resurrection of Eutychus
  • Resurrection of the Church
  • Resurrection of the Two Witnesses
  • Resurrection of OT Saints and Martyrs
  • Resurrection of the Wicked

Given the helpful feedback I received on the list, I have also decided to include a list of honorable mentions which I personally dont think are resurrections but have been thought so by some.

  • Jonah and the fish
  • Paul in the city of Lystra
  • The beast/head of the beast

A couple notes of clarification on this list of possible resurrections. First, some people assume Jonah may have been resurrected because of the connection Jesus makes in Matthew 12:40-41. However, the connection does not depend on the death of Jonah. Rather it is the time spent in the fish. There is nothing in Jonah or the gospels which make clear reference to the resurrection of Jonah. Yet, it of course remains possible.

Anastasis In Contemporary Philosophy

Anastasis or Ana-stasis is a concept in contemporary philosophy emerging from the works of Jean-Luc Nancy, Divya Dwivedi and Shaj Mohan. Nancy developed the concept through his interpretation of paintings depicting the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Dwivedi and Mohan, referring to Nancy, defined Ana-stasis as coming over stasis, which is a method for philosophy to overcome its end as defined. This concept is noted to be linked in the works of Nancy, Dwivedi and Mohan to have a relation to Heidegger’s other beginning of philosophy. The use of the phrase anastasis of philosophy indicates such other beginning.

His Resurrection Was Prophesied

The resurrection was not an afterthought or a “Plan B” operation to patch up a botched ministry. That Jesus would live as a man, die, and then resurrect was planned by God from the beginning and spoken of throughout the Bible:

  • Genesis 3:15 – God alludes to the Christ and how Satan would temporarily stop him but with the resurrection Christ would destroy Satan .

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed he shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.”

  • Acts 2:31 – Peter claims that Daniel spoke of the fact that the Messiah would resurrect.

he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His flesh suffer decay.

  • John 2:19 – Jesus Himself alluded not only to His own resurrection, but the number of days in which it would be accomplished.

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

The resurrection is the event that ties both the Old and New Testaments together – one looks forward to it and the other describes it and the results it accomplished.

The Shunammite Womans Son

Elisha was Elijahâs successor in more ways than one, so itâs only natural that God used him to raise another boy from death.

A wealthy woman who lived in Shunem was kind to Elisha and provided for him whenever the prophet was in town. On one occasion, Elisha sent his servant to ask, âSee, you have taken all of this trouble for us what is to be done for you?â . Well, the woman and her husband had no children, so Elisha promised her that the Lord would indeed bless her with a son.

Sure enough, a son was born to the Shunammite woman. But then something horrible happened. He died suddenly while out in the fields with his father. His mother went and found Elisha. When Elisha returned with her to the house, he went up to where the child lay, and in Elijah fashion, âhe stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warmâ . Then he did it again, the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
