What Does Lord Mean In The Bible

What Does The Bible Say About Work And Jobs

What does the Word âLordâ? Mean?

Colossians 3:22 says, You who are servants who are owned by someone, obey your owners.Work hard for them all the time, not just when they are watching you.Work for them as you would for the Lord because you honor God. When we obey the authority figures in our life, we are ultimately serving Christ.

What Does It Mean To Fear God

When the Bible refers to the fear of the Lord, it means having a deep respect, reverence and awe for Gods power and authority. Rather than causing someone to be afraid of God, a proper fear of the Lord leads one to love Him.

We fear many bad things: Crime, auto accidents, devastating storms, viruses, chemical weapons, mass murderers, terrorists, earthquakes, demons and Satan himself!

But our loving Heavenly Father? Why would God tell us to fear Him?

Development Of The Christian Canons

Development of the Old Testament canonDevelopment of the New Testament canonSt. Jerome in his StudyJeromeLatinVulgate

The Old Testament canon entered into Christian use in the Greek Septuagint translations and original books, and their differing lists of texts. In addition to the Septuagint, Christianity subsequently added various writings that would become the New Testament. Somewhat different lists of accepted works continued to develop in antiquity. In the 4th century a series of synods produced a list of texts equal to the 39, 46, 51, or 54-book canon of the Old Testament and to the 27-book canon of the New Testament that would be subsequently used to today, most notably the Synod of Hippo in 393 CE. Also c. 400, Jerome produced a definitive Latin edition of the Bible , the canon of which, at the insistence of the Pope, was in accord with the earlier Synods. With the benefit of hindsight, it can be said that this process effectively set the New Testament canon, although there are examples of other canonical lists in use after this time.

The New Testament writers assumed the inspiration of the Old Testament, probably earliest stated in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God”.

Some denominations have additional canonical holy scriptures beyond the Bible, including the standard works of the Latter Day Saints movement and Divine Principle in the Unification Church.

Why Do You Call Him Lord

" What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord?" June 26 in 2020 ...

Jonathan McAnulty – Minister

McAnulty

Christians identify the man Jesus as the Lord Jesus Christ, and have done so from the very beginning of Christianity. As Peter preached the full Gospel for the first time, on the day of Pentecost, the rousing conclusion to his sermon was, Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. The phrase is thereafter found in the New Testament around 80 more times.

The title Christ, meaning anointed, and synonymous with the Hebrew word, messiah, refers to the choosing of Christ by God Himself. Priests and kings alike, in the Old Testament, were anointed with oil to signify Gods blessing upon them. Jesus is, for His people both King and Priest, and He was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit, chosen to be His vessel of salvation to His people.

But why should Christians refer to Jesus as Lord? What is the significance therein?

The English word, Lord, refers to an individual of power and authority, especially in relation to self. The word comes from an Old-English word meaning, bread-keeper. That is, ones Lord was the person who provided food and security for ones self. It is, thus, in the English, a term of nobility, held over from a feudal system, given to ones master or ruler.

Jesus Himself understood this would be the case, and asked, Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do what I tell you?

Do you call Jesus, Lord?

How Does Love Cast Out Fear

The reverential fear of the Lord is designed to help us grow to become more like Godto grow in love. And this growth removes any need to be terrified of Gods judgment. As the apostle John put it:

Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love .

A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature by Arndt and Gingrich gives an excellent explanation of the use of phobos in verse 18. In the specific context of the verse, the meaning is slavish fear which is not to characterize the Christians relation to God.

The same shade of meaning is applied to the word fear in Romans 8:15, For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father.

Though we are to voluntarily yield ourselves as bond servants or slaves to God, He is not an abusive, cruel slave driver who terrorizes and torments us, which is the point of this verse.

Some misunderstand and think that love casts out not only fear but law. However, John explains that Gods laws actually define Gods love:

God wants His laws written on our hearts. For example, even if we had no fear of being caught, we should choose to never steal from othersbecause we love them and God.

What Is A Host

A host is an old term that was used to describe an army. Here is how the Oxford Reference defines host: Derived from the Latin hostis, the term host evolved, designating originally an armed expedition against an enemy, then the army itself, and finally, by extension, the obligation to serve in arms.

The first designation of this word leaps off the page to me because it is an armed expedition against an enemy. Again, we dont often think of God in the sense of a general leading an armed brigade, but that is one aspect of who God is. He is the Lord of Heavens Armies or the Lord of Hosts. Lets carry it to another logical but greater conclusion. One of the definitions of Lord of Hosts used in some translations is Lord Almighty. By this, you could even say he is Lord of All. This means if you aligned all the powers of the earth, and add in all of Satans power, they are still no match for the Lord of All, the one who is Lord Almighty or Lord of Hosts.

The first Lord means my lord of men or of God a title spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of reverence. LORD, in all caps later in the verse, refers to the root of our joy, which strengthens us. It is the Hebrew word “Yehovah” . Jehovah, the existing One. The proper name of the one true God. Yahweh Or Like Yahweh

As you explore this character further, youll encounter a big problem: Sometimes the angel of the Lord speaks as if he is a messenger from Yahweh, and other times he speaks as if he is Yahweh.

How is this possible? When you encounter problems like this in the Bible, you may think the Bible is contradictory or convolutedespecially in the Hebrew Scriptures.

But you have another option. You can ask the question: Is there something more the author wants to communicate by presenting this figure or feature in this strange way? In other words, is the contradiction intentional? Taking this approach will open your eyes to the literary art of Scripture and may even help you see some of Jesus central claims in a new light.

Meaning Of The Fear Of The Lord

The main Hebrew and Greek words translated fear in the Bible can have several shades of meaning, but in the context of the fear of the Lord, they convey a positive reverence.

The Hebrew verb yare can mean to fear, to respect, to reverence and the Hebrew noun yirah usually refers to the fear of God and is viewed as a positive quality. This fear acknowledges Gods good intentions . This fear is produced by Gods Word and makes a person receptive to wisdom and knowledge .

The Greek noun phobos can mean reverential fear of God, not a mere fear of His power and righteous retribution, but a wholesome dread of displeasing Him . This is the type of positive, productive fear Luke describes in the early New Testament Church:

Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied .

One resource includes this helpful summary: The fear of God is an attitude of respect, a response of reverence and wonder. It is the only appropriate response to our Creator and Redeemer .
