Circumcision is as controversial today as it was in New Testament times. Then, as now, it could tear marriages and families apart. Fortunately, insights we can gain from the Bible about circumcision can guide us today.

What is circumcision?

Is circumcision today the same as circumcision in the Bible?

No. The Oxford Dictionary of the Jewish Religion traces the origin of per’iah to the time of Hadrian :

Many Hellenistic Jews, particularly those who participated in athletics at the gymnasium, had an operation performed to conceal the fact of their circumcision . Similar action was taken during the Hadrianic persecution, in which period a prohibition against circumcision was issued. It was probably in order to prevent the possibility of obliterating the traces of circumcision that the rabbis added to the requirement of cutting the foreskin that ofperi’ah .

The New Testament predates this development . Medical circumcisions developed from the later, more radical rite, so today’s infant circumcisions are more severe than circumcisions in the Bible.

Is the foreskin a mistake of nature?

No. The Bible says that God pronounced creation ‘very good’ and that humans were made in the image of God . The Apostle Paul also said that God made every part of the body as he wanted it. .

How did circumcision start in the Bible?

Who was to be circumcised?

Did circumcision apply to anyone else?

… we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.

Paulresponds by vehemently excoriating these false teachers, warning againstcircumcision, and asserting that Christians need not follow Jewish dietarylaws.

Do People Still Need To Be Circumcised

What does the Bible say about circumcision? What is the Christian view ...

The verses in the New Testament state that circumcision of the physical body is not required to receive salvation. It states that circumcision is a spiritual matter and not practicing this does not condemn us from receiving salvation.

However, the Bible does not say that it is wrong to practice circumcision. In fact, Paul circumcised Timothy because of the presence of the Jews in the area and He did not want Timothy to be ostracized.

Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek .

He did not circumcise Timothy because he needed to in terms of belief, but because of societal norms that needed to be done and so as not to hinder Timothy from exercising his Christian freedom in the presence of Jews because being circumcised during this time was a big deal in their community

There are times when we can participate in societal norms in order to belong and, thereby, share the gospel. Even if our Christian belief does not necessarily demand us to do so, the practice of circumcision has become a societal norm and a free choice for Christians to make.

A Covenant Established With Abraham

For the Jews, circumcision was more than a rite of passage. For them it was a sign of their covenant with God. Circumcision marked them as the chosen people Gods special treasure. Others in their time practiced circumcision, particularly in Egypt. But it seems that only for Israel did it have the significance of marking a covenant relationship with their national deity.

Shortly before Isaac was born, God directed Abraham to circumcise all the males of his household, including himself, Ishmael, and his servants . This was to be an ongoing practice. Every male born into his family was to be circumcised on the eighth day after his birth.

During their stay in Egypt, the Jews became deeply immersed in Egyptian culture and religious practice . And along with that, the practice of circumcision likely fell by the wayside. But the practice was renewed on the banks of the Jordan shortly after Israel crossed the river but before beginning the conquest of Canaan .

Throughout the remainder of the Old Testament you will frequently see the division between the circumcised and the uncircumcised. This is essentially the division between the covenant people and outsiders. Or between Jew and Gentile.

What Does The Old Testament Say About Circumcision

In the Old Testament, we can read that circumcision was really instituted by God to set apart His people and those who do not believe in Him.

This can be read thoroughly in Genesis 17 during His covenant with Abraham:

This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring, both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people he has broken my covenant .

This is one of the reasons why circumcision is primarily known as a Jewish practice because they follow the Torah. This verse is also the basis for modern-day Christians who follow the practice of circumcision.

What Did Peter Say About Circumcision

Although the word of God hasnt been received by the Gentile until far as is known, Judea is believed to have heard the word. In this way, Peter was criticized by the circumcised believers when he went to Jerusalem to observe that their house was uncircumcised. He was therefore served to an uncircumcised house as well.

What Is Circumcision In The Bible

1. In the Bible, circumcision is the ritual act of removing a males child or adults foreskin. In the Jewish culture this took place eight days after birth. God first instituted circumcision in Genesis 17 when he made an everlasting covenant with Abraham. This act demonstrated the Israelites commitment to the covenant and to let God be God in their lives. It also reminded them of Gods part of the covenant, which was that God promised to make Abraham the father of many generations, that he would be a faithful, personal God, and that he would give them a land to call their own.

2. Other Old Testament references that refer to circumcision are Exodus 12:43-49, which indicates that circumcision was a requirement for participation in Passover. Later, in Joshua 5, before the battle of Jericho, Joshua circumcised all the males born in the desert. Deuteronomy 10:16 refers to circumcision of the heart, so that the Israelites might love and obey the Lord.

Circumcision Controversy In Early Christianity

According to the Hebrew Bible, circumcision was enjoined upon the biblical patriarch Abraham, his descendants and their slaves as “a token of the covenant” concluded with him by God for all generations, as an “everlasting covenant”.

The Council of Jerusalem during the Apostolic Age of the history of Christianity did not include religious male circumcision as a requirement for new gentile converts. This became known as the “Apostolic Decree”: “But to still the clamours of the converts from Pharisaism who demanded that the Gentile converts “must be circumcised and be commanded to observe the Law of Moses“, the matter was discussed in a public meeting. … By the decree of the Apostles the cause of Christian liberty was won against the narrow Judaizers, and the way smoothed for the conversion of the nations. The victory was emphasized by St. Paul’s refusal to allow Titus to be circumcised even as a pure concession to the extremists .” It may be one of the first acts differentiating early Christianity from Judaism.

Cutting around. This rite, practised before, as some think, by divers races, was appointed by God to be the special badge of his chosen people, an abiding sign of their consecration to him. It was established as a national ordinance . In compliance with the divine command, Abraham, though ninety-nine years of age, was circumcised on the same day with Ishmael, who was thirteen years old . Slaves, whether home-born or purchased, were circumcised and all foreigners must have their males circumcised before they could enjoy the privileges of Jewish citizenship . During the journey through the wilderness, the practice of circumcision fell into disuse, but was resumed by the command of Joshua before they entered the Promised Land . It was observed always afterwards among the tribes of israel, although it is not expressly mentioned from the time of the settlement in Canaan till the time of Christ, about 1,450 years. The Jews prided themselves in the possession of this covenant distinction .

In the Old Testament a spiritual idea is attached to circumcision. It was the symbol of purity . We read of uncircumcised lips , ears , hearts . The fruit of a tree that is unclean is spoken of as uncircumcised .

It was a sign and seal of the covenant of grace as well as of the national covenant between God and the Hebrews.

1. It sealed the promises made to Abraham, which related to the commonwealth of Israel, national promises.

What Is The Religious Significance Of Circumcision

Male circumcision is compulsory for Jews and is commonly practiced among Muslims. When circumcision is performed for religious reasons, it usually symbolises faith in God but it may also be done to promote health and hygiene.

Why was circumcision so important to God?

Circumcision was enjoined upon the biblical patriarch Abraham, his descendants and their slaves as a token of the covenant concluded with him by God for all generations, an everlasting covenant , thus it is commonly observed by two of the Abrahamic religions.

What religions believe in circumcision?

Islam is the largest religious group to practice male circumcision. As an Abrahamic faith, Islamic people practice circumcision as a confirmation of their relationship with God, and the practice is also known as tahera, meaning purification.

When did circumcision start in Bible?

The first mention of circumcision is in Genesis 17. God appears before Abraham and promises that his descendants will become a great nation and inherit the land. The price for this covenant is that Abraham must circumcise the males of his household, and his descendants must all undergo the ritual too.

What religion is against circumcision?

Why is Christianity the only Abrahamic religion that doesnt encourage circumcision? Because Paul believed faith was more important than foreskin.

Maybe now God is telling you that by placing your faith in Messiah Jesus His Spirit will circumcise your heart and refresh you today and forever.

As you confess Messiah Jesus as Lord and Savior, the One promised by the ancient prophets of Israel, the sacrificed Lamb of God, you too will be able to stand with other believers in Him and fully appreciate the words of Saul of Tarsus. Saul, an ancient scholar of Israel who became the apostle Paul, writes of an eternal circumcision of the heart:

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Messiah.

For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.

And in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Messiah.

Having been buried with Him in baptism , in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions.

Having cancelled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

What Jesus Said About Circumcision

What Nobody Told You About Joseph In The Old Testament

Johns Gospel says that when people criticizedJesus for healing a man on the Sabbath day, Jesus responded:

Mosesgave unto you circumcision 6 and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man. If a man onthe sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses shouldnot be broken are ye angry at me, because I have made a man everywhit whole on the sabbath day? Judge not according to theappearance, but judge righteous judgment.

Jesus contrasts the circumcision of Moses and thefathers with his making men whole, as the Greeks put it. However, this phrase is sharpened. It says, I have made a man every whitwhole. In thiscontext the phrase could hardly be more pointed and the point wouldnot be lost on the largely Greek and uncircumcised readership. Theycould not help but see it as hostile to both circumcisers and tocircumcision itself.

The Jerusalem Bible made this point clearly:

why are you angry with me for making a man wholeand complete on a sabbath?7

Moses gave you circumcision
