What Does The Bible Say About Breaking Promises

Eight Promises Of God In The New Testament

Gods Promise for a Broken Heart

Matthew: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

As life goes on, we forget our foundation as the people of God. Sometimes we begin to place other things before the Lord, and this verse is a perfect reminder of his promise if we put him first in all things.

Seeking the kingdom of God and his righteousness will open the door to all other needs in this world. Financial needs, relationships, and even small details that can be overlooked.

John: “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”

This promise is in the context of salvation. If you believe and receive Jesus, he will give you the power to become a child of God. You don’t need to work for your salvation its a gift from God when we simply believe in him.

Romans: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

Sometimes life doesn’t turn out the way we thought it would. At times, circumstances outside of our control enter our life and put us in a place of struggle or pain. Even bad things happen to the people of God, but Paul wrote “all things work together for good.” whatever the enemy meant for evil, Gods love and power are enough to turn around for good.

2 Corinthians: “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”

What Did Jesus Actually Say

In Matthew 5:33-35, Jesus says Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, You shall not make false vows, but shall fulfill your vows to the Lord. But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

During this time, Jews, particularly Pharisaic types, took ceremonious oaths. Jesus tells us not to swear by impressive oaths because he doesnt want us to create misleading statements that will further blind us from Gods love.

What Is The First Promise In The Bible

Its God speaking to the serpent that deceived Eve. Heres the promise God made to the serpent:

I will put enmity between you and the woman,

and between your offspring and her offspring

he shall bruise your head,

and you shall bruise his heel. Genesis 3:15, ESV

This promise was fulfilled continuously through the years.

But its ultimate fulfillment was when Jesus Christ dealt a crushing blow to Satan with his death on the cross, followed by his victorious resurrection and glorious ascension.

But theres even more to come!

Gods amazing promises were given to transform us by the renewing of our minds so that we will glorify him!

Its good to remember that as we read through them.

It Is A Harm To The Heavenly Image

What Does the Bible Say About Gods Promises? David ...

The Apostle Paul wrote to Christians from Corinth as follows:

For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin. But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.

So, the relationship that is now between the Church and Christ is that of a pure virgin betrothed to a man. Can Christ renounce his fiancee who is the Church? Can the Church go away from the purity and faithfulness to Christ and thus break off the engagement? No way! Christians who break the engagement should think that they harm this heavenly image and by their deeds the Name of God will be spoken evil before men.

Breaking Curses From The Enemy

Even today, in many cultures, witch doctors or shamans put curses on people through demonic powers. In some cultures, for example, voodoo is practiced. This includes such practices as sticking pins in a doll made in the image of a person, usually with some of that persons hair, fingernail clippings, and so forth incorporated into the doll. Hateful words are projected as the doll is stabbed over and over. There also are more gruesome practices used. However, with all evil witchcraft rituals, it is the hatred and evil projected from these people that is aimed at the targeted person that causes the harm. The curses spoken over that doll do not come to pass because of the doll or the pins. There is no power in those inanimate objects. They come to pass because of the demonic power operating through the person speaking forth the curses.

In many cultures, other than Western Societies, people have no problem understanding these curses and blessings, because the presence of demonic beings is very real to them. In fact, in many places, they leave offerings to appease evil spirits, for the purpose of warding them off so they will leave them alone.

If you have been affected by a curse such as listed above, we have good news for you. By accepting Jesus, you can be free from demonic oppression and actually have authority over the devil and his curses instead of his spirits having power over you or your family.

What Can Be Said About God’s Promisesto Us

  • He has promised to supply every need we have. The Bible says:”But my God shall supply all your need according to his richesin glory by Christ Jesus”. That’s Phillipians 4:19. Now notice,God has obligated Himself only to the extent of our needs. Thatwould include food, clothing, shelter, companionship, love, andsalvation thru Jesus Christ. It would not include the multiplicityof luxuries that we have come to think of as needs.
  • God has promised that His grace is sufficient for us. . in fact, He has made provision for our salvationby His grace through faith. Read Ephesians 2:8. It is throughan obedient faith that we have access into the grace of God accordingto Romans 5:2.
  • God has promised that His children will not be overtaken withtemptation. Instead, He assures us that a way of escape will beprovided. This promise is recorded in I Corinthians 10:13. Judewrote: “Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present your faultless before the presence of his glorywith exceeding joy” . Darius, King of the Medes, said to Daniel, “Thy God whom thou servest continually, hewill deliver thee” . He did deliver Daniel fromthe den of lions.
  • God has promised that all things work together for good tothose who love and serve Him faithfully . It maybe difficult for us to see and understand how this is accomplishedat times, but God has promised it, and He will deliver.
  • God has promised that those who believe in Jesus and are baptizedfor the forgiveness of sins will be saved. .

However, if you make a promise to God and fall short of fulfilling it, do not hide away or deny it. Do not make excuses. Instead, own up to it, confess to Him and ask for forgiveness.

Lucky for you, as a flawed human who is bound to make many empty promises, God is full of grace. He loves you and has endless grace on your shortcomings.

What Does The Bible Say About Making Promises To God

Sermon: “Anger, Fear, and a Broken Promise” on 1 Samuel 18:6-16

Have you ever come to a crossroads in your life, and made a promise or a vow to God that if He would do something, you would do something, or stop doing something for that matter? I know I have, and in the immaturity of my walk with the Lord I didnt realize what I was doing, and have broken them numerous times. This is why I no longer make them. What does the bible say about making promises to God though?

Today I tackle another reader request and hope you will find encouragement about this topic. Have something you would like covered? Send me a message and I will add it to the list.

The Importance and Power In Our Words

First, let us remember the importance and power of our words. They have the power of life and death as we read in Proverbs 18:21,

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Our words are the overflow of the heart which is the fruit of what Christ is doing within us that determines if the tree is good or bad.

This is why it is important in a world that has become filled with noise and idle words, to be aware of what you are speaking to the Lord, your spouse, your family, and your world. You have the power to bring life and death. Be wise in the words that you speak.

    The Consequences of Rash Decisions

Probably one of the most notable Bible stories about making rash decisions is that of Jephthah in the book of Judges. Jephthah was fighting the Ammonites and made a vow to the Lord. He said,

Bible Verses About Breaking The Covenant

So the Lord said to Solomon, Because you have done this, and you have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you, and will give it to your servant.

Put the trumpet to your lips!Like an eagle the enemy comes against the house of the Lord,Because they have transgressed My covenantAnd rebelled against My law.

Not like the covenant which I made with their fathersOn the day when I took them by the handTo lead them out of the land of Egypt For they did not continue in My covenant,And I did not care for them, says the Lord.

They rejected His statutes and His covenant which He made with their fathers and His warnings with which He warned them. And they followed vanity and became vain, and went after the nations which surrounded them, concerning which the Lord had commanded them not to do like them.

Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things under the ban and have both stolen and deceived. Moreover, they have also put them among their own things.

It shall be that the one who is taken with the things under the ban shall be burned with fire, he and all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has committed a disgraceful thing in Israel.

Keeping Vows Yes Yes Or No No

The best summary dealing with the making and keeping of vows is given by Jesus in His Sermon on the Mount. Here are a few verses from His sermon.

Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD. . . . But let your statement be, Yes, yes or No, no and anything beyond these is of evil. Matthew 5:33, 37

Here Jesus is rejecting the Jewish religious leaders teaching that some oaths, vows or promises did not really count. They said some promises were very important to keep and others were not that important. For example, if you made a promise to your manager at work, the Pharisees might say that that one counts but not the one you made to your spouse, daughter or son. The promise you made to your credit card company or your mortgage company is not as important as the one you made to your church. The commitment you made to your mother or father is not really as important as that football game, the conversation with your girl friend, or that movie. For others the marriage vow is an old, tired idea and some treat it like a vow to be ignored when convenient. Jesus makes two points: keep our vows and it is better not to make vows.

If the Lord wills, we shall live and also do this or that. But as it is, you boast in your arrogance all such boasting is evil. James 4:15-16

What Does God Say About Fulfilling His Promises

God said that if he promises it that he will do it. We tend to want what we ask for in prayer, but when He doesnt fulfill our wishes we get upset. God doesnt guarantee to give us the job we want, the spouse we ask for, etc. But, God does promise to give us peace, joy, faith, wisdom, and other holy characteristics that make living on earth easier.

What Should The Church Do To Those Who Break Off The Engagement

To study the causes and take appropriate attitude towards the guilty one. I remember one case when a young leader in the Church had broken the engagement without giving explanations and thus dishonoring the girl. As I recall, he was put on observation and removed from any leadership position because he was no longer an example worthy to follow.

What Does The Bible Say About Breaking The Engagement

    Question:

I would like very much for you to post, with explanations, something about the engagements made in the Lord and then broken off, because there are more young people whom I see practicing it.What does the Bible say across this subject and what should the churchs attitude be towards these young people?

In the article What is engagement? I presented the following definition:

The word from the Old Testament translated engagement is the Hebrew aras, that means an engagement to marry, or to be bound with a promise to marry someone.

    What Should We Do Instead

The people who swear an oath during Jesus time did them to impress others and didnt intend to keep the promises that they were made. The only true way we can appeal to God by oath is with a true oath to bind us closer to the word of Jesus Christ. God makes promises to us that never fail, and we can only strive to do the same by keeping our promises in everyday life.

Jesus asks us to go the extra mile for people, stating If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. By doing this, we can keep our promises to those around us and our oaths to Jesus.

Why Shouldnt We Swear By Heaven

    Broken Promises from Jesus

Nor shall you make an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your statement be, Yes, yes or No, no anything beyond these is of evil. We dont want to swear falsely especially by Heaven. Jesus is essentially saying not to let these oaths fool us or others, as anything that breaks his word is ultimately evil. We shouldnt swear falsely by heaven because it shows a lack of respect for God. If youre calling on a God as a witness to a false promise, that could make God out to be a liar as well. We want to show God in the best light that we can to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

    Does God Do Bad Things

To break a promise is the same aslying, and God cannot lie . James warns us to takeresponsibility for our own temptation, saying, “Let no man saywhen he is tempted, ‘I am tempted by God,’ for God can’t be temptedwith evil, and he himself tempts no one.”

For more information about what God canand cannot do, read Are All Things Possible for God?

If you are concerned about the badthings that do happen in the world, remember that humans have theunique ability of independent will, which is why evil happens in theworld.

“But each one is tempted, when heis drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then the lust, when ithas conceived, bears sin and the sin, when it is full grown, bringsforth death. ”

And God will judge this evil, as Jesusexplains in many of his parables, such as the Parable of the Weeds,”The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect outof his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, and they willthrow them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping andgnashing of teeth.”

However, remember not to confuse Godbeing unable to break a deal with God answering a prayer. God is nota magic genie that he should obey our every wish and command. On thecontrary, we are to be his servants, not the other way around.
