If it is not enforceable then an application can be made to the Land Registry to remove the covenant from the deeds. If a landowner feels a restrictive covenant is unreasonable, they may have a case for having it removed altogether or, if thats not appropriate, possibly varying or amending the covenant.

Agreements And Promises To Abraham
About 4,000 years ago, God reached out to Abram and made an offer to him. The relationship started in Genesis 12 where God said, Get out of your country, from your family and from your fathers house, to a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation I will bless you and make your name great and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed .
The following verses show Abrams faith, obedience and worship of the true God growing. God began to work in many specific ways with Abramwhose name was changed to Abraham.
The apostle Paul points out that, spiritually speaking, all those who are faithful are the children of Abraham and will inherit his spiritual blessings . This spiritual promise of salvation came through Abrahams Seed, who is Christ .
The physical blessings were passed down to Abrahams descendants. From the marriage of Abraham and Sarah came Isaac, who passed the blessings on to his son Jacob, who passed them on to his 12 sons who formed the tribes of Israel. It was these 12 tribes or extended families that became slaves in Egypt.

Some Definitions Of Covenant Are Too Narrow And Dont Fit Every Covenant In Scripture
Some scholars have said that covenants always presuppose an already existing relationship. The Gibeonite story shows that this is not the case, for Israel didnt have any relations with the Gibeonites before entering into a covenant with them . Also, some say that all covenants are enacted with blood, but this isnt true of the marriage covenant or the covenant between Jonathan and David . Nor is there evidence of a sacrifice at the inauguration of the Lords covenant with David . We need to distinguish, when talking about covenants, about what is often true and what is always the case.
The promise of universal blessing is fully and finally fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Mosaic Covenant At Sianai With The Hebrews
Some covenants which God is depicted as having enacted with humans are everlasting in the sense that there is no human side of the bargain which people must uphold lest the covenant end. The Mosaic covenant with the Hebrews at Sinai, as described in Deuteronomy, is a heavily conditioned one because the continuation of this covenant is dependent on the Hebrews faithfully obeying God and doing their duties. Indeed, all the laws are now divinely ordained, such that violations are now sins.

The Covenant With Israel The Covenant At Mount Sinai Is A Temporary Covenant
The covenant with Israel was gracious, for the Lord freed his people from Egyptian slavery. The covenant was also patterned after suzerain-vassal treaties in the ancient Near East. Blessings were promised for obedience and curses for disobedience. Israel failed to abide by the covenant stipulations, summarized in the Ten Commandments and as a result was sent into exile. The prophets declared in covenant lawsuits, which detailed Israels violation of the covenant, that judgment was coming. The covenant with Israel had a built-in obsolescence and focused on Israel as a nation it did not transform the heart of those who heard the covenant demands.
The New Covenant Is The Climax Of All Of Gods Covenants
The new covenant represents the culmination of Gods saving work among his people. God regenerates his people by his Spirit and renews their hearts so that they obey him. The basis for such renewal is the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, for by his atoning death and resurrection complete forgiveness of sins is achieved. Hence, a new and bold access to God that wasnt available in the old covenant is obtained. The covenant with Israel has passed away, and now the promise is fulfilled in the restored Israel, which consists of both Jews and Gentiles. All the promises made to Abraham and David are fulfilled in the new covenant.

There Are Good Reasons To Believe There Is A Covenant At Creation
Some scholars doubt whether there was a covenant with Adam, but we have good reasons for seeing a covenant at creation. Even though the word covenant is lacking, the elements of a covenant relationship are present. The word covenant doesnt need to be present for a covenant to exist since the term covenant isnt found in the inauguration of the Davidic covenant. The claim that all covenants are redemptive isnt borne out by the use of the term in the Scriptures. The elements of a covenant were present at creation, for blessing was promised for obedience and cursing for disobedience.
Covenant In The Old Testament
The term berît occurs often in the OT and can be conveniently treated as the designation of an economic-political alliance and of a theological alliance.
Economic-Political Alliance. For the most part, the economic-political alliances mentioned in the OT are purely secular and profane in character. Nevertheless, by the fact that they were concluded by the leaders elect, they have a part to play in the gradual unfolding of salvation history. In some cases to separate the sacred from the profane does violence to the narrative, since both are usually intricately entwined.
In Patriarchal Times. abraham made an alliance with Canaanite chiefs that was instrumental in the rescue of Lot . He concluded a covenant with Abimelech , which Isaac renewed . In both instances, the contracting parties agreed on perpetual mutual loyalty. Jacob made an alliance only with Laban .
Antagonism between the two kingdoms resurrected under Jeroboam II of Israel and Amasiah of Judah , leading at the time of Ahaz to alliances between Israel and Rezin, King of Damascus and between Judah and Tiglath-pileser, King of Assyria . This intervention of Assyria in the international affairs of Judah and Israel marks a new period in the covenant history of the Israelites. Allusions are found both in the historical books and in the prophetical works .

Virtually All The Covenants Have Both Conditional And Unconditional Elements
Since covenant partners obligate themselves to one another with promises and call curses upon themselves if they disobey, we are not surprised to learn that virtually all covenants have both conditional and unconditional elements. There are clearly conditions in the covenant with Israel made at Sinai. Some scholars say that the covenant with Abraham and David are unconditional, but when we look at the text carefully, conditions are clearly present . What needs to be investigated is how the conditional and unconditional elements relate to one another. The principle enunciated here, however, also has exceptions. The covenant with Noah, for instance, seems to be unconditional.

According To The Hebrews
Thus, according to both Paul and the writer of Hebrews, the new covenant is far superior to the old . Such is already implicit in the use of the adjective new in 1 Cor 11:25 , which clearly alludes to Jeremiahs negative contrast . Paul is even more pointed, however, in 2 Cor 3, where he explicitly contrasts the new and the old covenants, highlighting the vast inferiority of the old in comparison with the surpassing glory and permanence of the new. A similar, negative comparison is also made by his figurative contrast between Hagar and Sarah in Gal 4:2131.
The author of Hebrews draws analogous conclusions. Having noted the superiority of the new covenant in Heb 7:22, the writer elaborates his point through an extended comment on Jer 31:3134, which forms a literary bracket around much of the argument in Heb 810.

Peace in Christ! A good definition of covenant is found in Our Sunday Visitors Catholic Encyclopedia: Revised Edition, . We wont quote the entire entry, but the following three sentences provide a beginning definition:
A solemn promise, fortified by an oath, concerning future action. The oath might be expressed in words or in a symbolic action. Both the Sinai covenant and the covenant in Christs blood brought into being a People of God and called for complete surrender to God in response to His love .
A covenant is more than a mere impersonal contract, in which two parties agree to an exchange of goods and services. A covenant binds persons together beyond the mere contractual agreement. Marriage is a prime example. While marriage has contractual elements and promises, it is a covenant that binds two persons together. Marriage obviously binds two persons in a unique way, but all covenants bind persons together in some way.
The New Covenant in Christ binds together God to His people with a future promise of redemption. It also binds Gods People to one another .

What Is A Covenant And How Does It Relate To Interpreting Scripture
So one of the main features that we see throughout the Bible are covenants. Covenants are not exactly contracts in the way we think of contracts today, though there is some similarity. A covenant is essentially a relationship, but it’s a relationship that has been formalized and has been brought under sanctions, as it were. So there are blessings that come if the relationship is kept, and there are penalties that come if the relationship is broken, and a covenant is simply the terms of that relationship.
This was a very common feature of the ancient Near East in the way nations governed their relationships with each other, and God in his kindness and his condescension so that we can understand what He’s doing, kind of picked up that form and used it to describe our relationship with Him, since He is the great king, and He has brought us into a relationship with Himself.
The language of covenant beginning, I think, in very seed form even in Genesis 1 and 2, but then in its fullest expression later on with Noah and then with Abraham. We see the covenant established with Israel, and then a personal covenant established with David, and then finally the new covenant that is announced in the prophets and fulfilled in Christ. These covenants become a way of helping us understand how is it that we relate to God, and He relates to us.

The Hebrew term briyth for covenant is from a root with the sense of cutting, because pacts or covenants were made by passing between cut pieces of flesh of the victim of an animal sacrifice. There are two major types of covenants in the Hebrew Bible, including the obligatory type and the promissory type.
Main Kinds Of Covenant In The Bible
There are two main kinds of covenants in the Bible:
- Covenants between man and man. These are the covenants weve looked at thus far. They tie families together, they make new families, and they define relationships between entire people groups. Examples: Abraham and Abimelech , Jacob and Laban , David and Jonathan , and marriage .

- Some of Gods covenants are completely unconditional: theyre not sustained by human performance. When God makes His covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15, He doesnt require anything from Abraham. His covenant with David was unconditional as well .
Much of the Bibles story is shaped around the covenants between God and man. In fact, the Old Testament and the New Testament are named this way because they detail two major covenants between God and His people.

Jesus Is The Covenantal Climax
This wouldnt be any fun if we didnt see how the covenants pointed towards and were fulfilled in Jesus. Thats the best part! The New Testament presents Jesus as the offspring of Abraham who trusted his Father, even to the point of death, and so became a blessing to all nations. He is the obedient Israelite who perfectly kept, fulfilled, and thus transcended the law of God. He is the royal son of David who inaugurated Gods kingdom in his life, death, and resurrection, and now sits at Gods right hand reigning as shepherd-king over the earth and will continue to reign forever over the new creation.
Think about itJesus perfectly succeeded at every point humans failed. This makes him the guarantor and mediator of the new and better covenant . Now people from every nation, tribe, and tongue who are joined to Jesus in faith are part of Gods covenant family and experience the rich blessings of the new covenant.
