What Happens After Death According To The Bible

What Happens After Death (Bible Truths Explained)

In today’s article you will find out What happens after death according to the bible, in our comprehensive guide.

Christians go to heaven when they die? No, the Bible compares death to sleep for all people. This means that even Christians do not go anywhere after death. Scripture, however, reveals that God’s people will be resurrected at the return of Jesus Christ and will reign with Him on earth.

What happens when we die? Almost all Christian denominations teach an afterlife “paradise or hell”. Essentially, they believe that every human being has an immortal soul that will go straight to heaven or hell after the physical body dies.

There are many ideas about what heaven and hell are like, and who will go to heaven and who will go to hell. But do popular ideas about heaven and hell come from the Bible?

The Bible teaches very clearly that all human beings die: “And how it was commanded that men should die once …” . Since death awaits us all, what happens after death is one of the most important questions we can ask – and answer!

Simple Steps To Salvation

  • Believe in the name of Jesus Christ.
  • Recognize that you are a sinner in need of a Savior.
  • Acknowledge the penalty for sin is death.
  • Ask God for forgiveness and repent from your sin.
  • Accept Jesus as your personal Savior and follow him.
  • Once youve accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, its important to live a life as Christ lived in response to what God has done for you. We want to be like Jesusnot as a means of salvation but out of our love for Him.

Jesus is our example! We can live a Christ-like life by following the guiding principles found in the Bible. Here are a few of those principles:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control against such things there is no law.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things .

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another .

Christians are to be a light in the community. Wherever you go, others should see Jesus in you. Jesus is love. Lets follow His example!

A prominent founder of the Adventist Church once said,

We also have the hope of the resurrection and of one day seeing our loved ones who have died in Christ resurrected to life again one day soon.

    Is There Life After Death

What Does The Bible Say Happens Immediately After Death?

Though we may die, Jesus says, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live . We will receive immortality when Jesus comes again . The Bible says that all those who have diedboth righteous and wickedwill be raised to life in one of two resurrections. The righteous will be raised to life at Jesus second coming. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first . According to this verse, the righteous do not go to heaven when they die. They remain asleep in the grave until Jesus returns and raises them to immortal life .

The wicked are raised to life in a separate resurrectionthe resurrection of condemnation. Jesus said, Do not marvel at this for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forththose who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation .

When He returns, our loved ones asleep in Christ will awake from their tombs. No matter how long the time has passed, be it long or short, will seem but a moment to them. What Really Happens At Death

5, 6. What does the Bible teach about the condition of the dead?

5 What happens at death is no mystery to Jehovah, the Creator of the brain. He knows the truth, and in his Word, the Bible, he explains the condition of the dead. Its clear teaching is this: When a person dies, he ceases to exist. Death is the opposite of life. The dead do not see or hear or think. Not even one part of us survives the death of the body. We do not possess an immortal soul or spirit. *

    Where did the flame go?

6 After Solomon observed that the living know that they will die, he wrote: But the dead know nothing at all. He then enlarged on that basic truth by saying that the dead can neither love nor hate and that there is no work nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom in the Grave. Similarly, Psalm 146:4 says that when a man dies, his thoughts perish. We are mortal and do not survive the death of our body. The life we enjoy is like the flame of a candle. When the flame is put out, it does not go anywhere. It is simply gone.

    What Is The Second Death

Those who are raised in the second resurrection will face judgement. They will die a final death that lasts forever.

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire .

The second death is the eternal consequence of being separated from God. You may have pictures in your mind of eternal torment and suffering for the lost sinners an eternal hell where fire burns the lost forever and ever.

But what does the Bible say? Those who die without a faith in Jesus will face eternal separation from God not eternal suffering.

If the wicked were tormented in hell forever, they would be immortal souls. The Scripture says God alone is immortal, and only those who choose redemption through Jesus will be granted eternal life .

the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see .

And when the lost die the second death, they will be like no more, like ash on the ground. They are destroyed forever, not forever burning.

The fire is an all-consuming fire. And when all wickedness has been destroyed, the fire will go out.

Behold, they are like stubble the fire consumes them they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame. No coal for warming oneself is this, no fire to sit before! .

It was a devastating feeling for Jesus and He cried out just before He died:

    What Happens When You Die

Benjamin Franklin said, In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. His words, though slightly humorous, remind us of a very real truth: One of the things we all have in common is that everyone dies.

At one time or another, most people wonder what will happen when they die. Death feels frightening and mysterious, and perspectives on what happens and what it means vary significantly.

    What happens after we die?

When Jesus hung on the cross where He was being executed, there were two criminals being crucified on either side of Him. Luke 23:42-43 describes a conversation between one of those criminals and Jesus: Then said, Jesus, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom. And Jesus replied, I assure you, today you will be with Me in paradise.

The paradise Jesus mentions is where people who have a relationship with God go immediately after they die. When people say heaven, this is often what they mean.

Heaven will be an amazing place, but its not designed to be the eternal home of Gods people. That even more amazing place is usually referred to as the new creation or the new heaven and new earth.

What Happens To Your Soul When You Die

Many Christians think of the soul as an immortal entity within us that goes on living after death. What does the Bible say? Describing the creation of human beings in the beginning, the Bible says, And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul . Other Bible translations say, . . . and man became a living being . God did not put a soul into man. He formed the body from the dust of the ground, and then He breathed His life-giving spirit into the lifeless bodyand the result was a soul, or a living being. When a person dies, the reverse takes place. The breath of life departs from the body, and the soul no longer exists. Thats what the Bible says. The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it . At the resurrection, God reunites the body and His life-giving spiritand the person lives again.

If souls existed as separate entities that lived on after we died, that would mean we have immortality. However, the Bible says human beings do not have immortality. Only God is immortal . Paul says that the righteous seek for glory, honor, and immortality . If we had immortal souls, why would the righteous seek after something they already have?

This Bible verse is a direct warning, not to seek out familiar spirits. As followers of God we should have faith in His guidance and leading in our lives rather than trusting in the dead.

Leviticus 19:31 also provides warning not to consult mediums and wizards. It states, “Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God”.

What Happens When A Christian Dies

    Colin Smith

We know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens .

A Christian is a person who owns two homes. The home you are living in now is a temporary one, a tent. But you have another home that is more enduring, more substantial. The date for your moving to your new home has not yet been given, but it is already known to God.

If they are alive at the time of Jesus’ second return they will be transformed then live with Him eternally. If they should pass away before His second return they will sleep for awhile until the Lord resurrects them.

In this scripture passage the disciples were fearful because they thought they had seen a ghost. Seeing ghosts or the spirits of dead loved ones may cause you to feel afraid.

If you are terrified because of dreams or other experiences with a dead loved one, remember the words that Jesus spoke to His disciples. In the verse that follows He told the disciples, “Be of good cheer it is I be not afraid”. The Lord is with you and he will protect you so there is no need to be afraid.

Bible Q& a: What Happens After Death For Christians

What happens after death (what the Bible says)

    Tim Augustyn

Question: What happens after a Christian dies? Do we just not exist anymore? Ive heard other people say we enter into a soul sleep.

    Answer:

This is Pastor Tim from Unlocking the Bible. Thanks for your good question.

The simple answer to your question is No. After we die, our souls do not cease to exist, nor do we enter into soul sleep.

There is a lot of confusion at this point, I think, because the Bible often refers to death as falling asleep. Paul says, We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep .

And when Lazarus died, Jesus said, Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep .

I believe Jesus and others use this language as a physical description of the human body after death, rather than a description of the soul.

The idea of soul sleep does not square with what the rest of the Bible says about life after death for the Christian. As the apostle Paul contemplates his own death, he says, For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain . In other words, if he continues to live, he gets to serve Christ, but if he dieswell, thats even better!

He goes on to explain why: My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better . It is not far better because hes tired and his soul gets to sleep. Its far better because he gets to be with Christ.

I hope and pray that this is helpful to you, my friend,

    Pastor Tim
