Wrong Types Of Judgment

Superficial judgment is wrong. Passing judgment on someone based solely on appearances is wrong . It is foolish to jump to conclusions before investigating the facts . Simon the Pharisee passed judgment on a woman based on her appearance and reputation, but he could not see that the woman had been forgiven Simon thus drew Jesus rebuke for his unrighteous judgment .

Hypocritical judgment is wrong. Jesus command not to judge others in Matthew 7:1 is preceded by comparisons to hypocrites and followed by a warning against hypocrisy . When we point out the wrong doing of others while we ourselves err in the same way, we condemn ourselves .

Harsh, unforgiving judgment is wrong. We are always to be gentle toward everyone . It is the merciful who will be shown mercy , and, as Jesus warned, In the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you .

Self-righteous judgment is wrong. We are called to humility, and God opposes the proud . The Pharisee in Jesus parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector was confident in his own righteousness and from that proud position judged the publican however, God sees the heart and refused to justify the Pharisees sin .

Untrue judgment is wrong. The Bible clearly forbids bearing false witness . Slander no one .

Scripture Says That We Are To Judge And Expose Evil

These false teachings and these lies entering Christianity that say, you can be a homosexual and still be a Christian would not have entered if more people would have stood up and said, no its sin!

2. Ephesians 5:11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them.

What Did Jesus Say About Judging Or Condemning Others

Jesus tells his followers not to judge others. He says that if we do judge others, we will be judged ourselves.

Do not judge, so that you will not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.

In Luke, Jesus says the same thing, but also warns against condemning others.

Do not judge, and you will not be judged do not condemn, and you will not be condemned.

God looks at the heart . Only God can look at the heart. We are all sinful human beings . So, we cannot judge or condemn others without deserving Jesus anger You hypocrite!. We cannot know what is in another persons heart.

How do we stand against those who behave in ways that are opposite to the behavior Jesus requires from his followers, without judging or condemning that person? Answer we stand against the behavior, not the person. If we are followers of the teachings of Jesus, we do not judge or condemn the individual concerned. For example, if someone is promoting violence as a way to achieve an objective, we promote peaceful action. Or, if someone is clearly lying, we point out the truth, but we do not judge or condemn the person.

Jesus tells us to be merciful and tells us how God will respond to those who are merciful. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. . If we are merciful, we will not judge others or condemn them.

Jesus tells us to be meek . If we are kind and gentle, we will not judge others or condemn them.

What Does The Bible Really Say About Judging Others

Inspirational Quotes About Judging Others. QuotesGram

In ourlast post we examined the definitions, examples, and differences in using good judgment and being judgmental. In this article we take a look at specifically what the Bible says and means about judging others.

Jesus command not to judge others is one of the most widely quoted of His sayings, even though it is frequently quoted in disregard of its context. Here is Jesus statement: Do not judge, or you too will be judged . Many people use this verse in an attempt to silence their critics, interpreting Jesus meaning as You dont have the right to tell me Im wrong. Taken alone, Jesus command Do not judge does seem to preclude making negative assessments of others. However, there is much more to the passage than those three words.

The Bibles command that we not judge others does not mean we cannot show discernment. Immediately after Jesus says, Do not judge, He says, Do not give dogs what is sacred do not throw your pearls to pigs . A little later in the same sermon, He says, Watch out for false prophets. . . . By their fruit you will recognize them . How are we to discern who are the dogs and pigs and false prophets unless we have the ability to make a judgment call on doctrines and deeds? Jesus is giving us permission to tell right from wrong.

Later we are told to gently confront erring brothers or sisters in Christ . We are to practice church discipline . We are to speak the truth in love .

Make Value Judgments About Other Christians

Romans 12:19 Updated American Standard Version

19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but yield place to the wrath for it is written: Vengeance is mine I will repay, says the Lord.

Dearly beloved This expression of tenderness was especially appropriate in an exhortation to peace. It reminded them of the affection and friendship which ought to subsist among them as brethren.

Avenge not yourselves To avenge is to take satisfaction for an injury by inflicting punishment on the offender. To take such satisfaction for injuries done to society, is lawful and proper for a magistrate Rom_13:4. And to take satisfaction for injuries done by sin to the universe, is the province of God. But the apostle here is addressing private individual Christians. And the command is, to avoid a spirit and purpose of revenge. But this command is not to be so understood that we may not seek for justice in a regular and proper way before civil tribunals. If our character is assaulted, if we are robbed and plundered, if we are oppressed contrary to the law of the land, religion does not require us to submit to such oppression and injury without seeking our rights in an orderly and regular manner. If it did, it would be to give a premium to iniquity, to countenance wickedness, and require a man, by becoming a Christian, to abandon his rights.

For it is written Deu_32:35.

According to my understanding, this verse is not telling us to never judge others. Rather, its a warning to be careful how we judge.

  • The measure of judgment we use against another will be used against us
  • Examine your own heart and actions first
  • Dont be a hypocrite! Acknowledge your own weaknesses so you are able to approach your brother in love and humility .

Here is another.

Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O manyou who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourselfthat you will escape the judgment of God? Romans 2:1-3 ESV

This is another passage of scripture that would seem at first to be saying that we shouldnt judge but look a bit closer.

We can get a bit more insight by looking at what the author just got done telling them in the previous chapter.

Again, this passage is not a command to not judge, but rather a warning to be careful in how we judge. These Christians were not judging others rightly because they failed to examine their own lives before passing judgment.

How Do You Not Judge Others

So how do we get to this place where we learn not to judge others? I think as long as sin exists that this is something we will struggle with. But in the meantime, what we can do is try to remember what the Bible says about judging others:

  • The way we judge other people is the same way we will be judged.

Judge not, and you will not be judged condemn not, and you will not be condemned forgive, and you will be forgiven Luke 6:37 ESV

For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Matthew 7:2 ESV

  • We are in no position to judge the Law of God. If we believe that we can, were basically saying that were capable of judging God.

Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? James 4:11-12 ESV

Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God Romans 14:10 ESV

All of us will one day face the judgment of God. Do we want to be judged by the same harsh measures we use to judge our brothers and sisters?

Why Do We Judge And What Does Judging Look Like

What does the Bible REALLY says about Judging Other People?

The sin of judgment is often rooted in insecurity and pride. It is easier in our awkwardness to make a comment to the person beside us, than it is to hold the judgement that is on our tongue. And our pride often tells us that judgement is okay because we are and know better than the other person. In essence, our insecurity and pride reveal the judgement of souls through our criticism, gossip, and assumptions of others. But God is not fazed by our judgmental hearts. In fact, He even called out the priest Samuel for judging by appearance in 1 Samuel 16:7:

But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

And in John 7:24 Jesus says: Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.

As Christians we are not called to judge the appearance or outward perception of someone. Rather, we are called to exhort and build up the church, humbly confront sin, and always seek reconciliation.

The Definition Of Judging Others

Our friend Webster defines the word judgment as the process of forming an opinion or evaluation by discerning and comparing a formal decision given by a court.

The Strongs dictionary defines the original meaning of the word as properly, to distinguish, i.e. decide by implication, to try, condemn, punish:avenge, conclude, condemn, damn, decree, determine, esteem, judge, go to law, ordain, call in question, sentence to, think.

Looking at these definitions, we can conclude that judging others is when we form an opinion about someone, then take some kind of action based on that opinion.

Bible Verses About Judging Others Righteously

Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brothers eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brothers eye. Matthew 7:1-5

My Review Of Tacos For Two

When Rorys aunt dies and left her beloved food truck to her, it was a responsibility she took very seriously even though she couldnt cook and had zero desire to become a chef. The food truck competition was an opportunity to earn some much needed funds while she dreamed of someday doing something that she loved. When competition shows up in the form of lawyer-turned-food-truck-owner Jude, Rory is not amused. Sparks fly between the two but their relationship is doomed before it even begins.

It was easy to like Rory. You could see right from the start that she had some baggage from past hurts and that she genuinely cared about the people she felt responsible for.

She continued to work at making her familys food truck a viable business though it was not what she wanted as a career.

Jude was also stuck in a job he hated with family who were manipulative and underhanded but I respect him for trying to stand up for himself.

There were so many times when I hoped they could have been friends but Rory was so quick to jump to conclusions that sometimes I just wanted to smack her. I get why she had relationship phobia, I really do, but she was so determined to think the worst of Jude that it was downright annoying.

To Love As We Ought We Must Judge Our Own Sins Down To The Heart Level

Some commentators struggle with the flow of thought here, but I think there is a logical flow. Jesus was speaking primarily to His disciples, whom He was training to be leaders. Rather than judging others , they must judge themselves or they will be like blind guides of the blind, whose followers would be just like them . Thus they must take the log out of their own eye before they try to help others with the speck in their eye . As they examine themselves, they should look at their fruit . If their words are judgmental, bitter, and evil, it indicates that their hearts are evil. But if they are merciful, forgiving, and generous, it indicates that God has truly done a work of grace in their hearts. That is the flow of thought here.

A. We must judge our own sins, or we are like the blind leading the blind .

B. We must judge our own sins as the prerequisite to helping others with their sins .

Note that Jesus does not say that we should not help a brother with the speck in his eye, but rather, we should first take the log out of our own eye so that we can see clearly to help him with his speck. The word for log refers to the main supporting beam of a house. Your fellow worker has a speck of sawdust in his eye that he needs help removing. But how ridiculous for you to try to help when you have a beam in your own eye!

C. We must judge our own sins down to the heart level .

The Real Story About Judging Others

This reminds me of a time I drew aas being insensitive, uncaring, bitter, andgenerally despicable. This quenched the love I have for her, and it wasgradually turning into hatred. I easily join others to judge her mistakes andshortcomings. We always find fault in her, and I really supported everydemeaning word thrown at her. I felt she deserves it, and we felt that mighthelp her adjust her attitude of being despicable. Therefore, we kept at it.

Fast-forward to the dayI had a heart-to-heart talk with her. I realized she has not always been thedespicable sister, but a long time when I was still a baby, a traumaticexperience had affected her negatively and no one believed her. One of ouruncles had tried to have carnal knowledge of her and despite her pleas to our uncle he went further to abuse her sexually and threatened her never to make it knownto anyone.

“You are worth little to nothing in the family, and no onewill believe you anyway.” True to these words from our uncle, no onebelieved my sister’s story when she dared the consequences of the threat andspoke up.
