  • The Mosaic Covenant At Mount Sinai

The ten commandments form the basic concept of what became known as the “Mosaic Covenant.” A “covenant” simply means a contract, understood as a treaty between a people and their god. The covenant with Moses mirrors other ancient treaties, such as the ones among the Hittites and Mesopotamian cultures. The terms of the treaty promise protection from the god if the group honors the deity with obedience and offerings. The famous Code of Hammurabi and the stela show him receiving the laws and social codes from the sun god Shamash who was also the god of justice .

The 10 Commandments In The Bible Transformed The World By Human Government

We have talked about the Ten Commandments and the rule of law, but we might also apply the rule of law to the larger framework of human government. Each of the commandments carries within it principles that when studied and applied, create human government that is taught in Scripture. In this day and age where there is talk of so-called benefits of socialism, we would do well to return to the biblical principles for human government that are clearly revealed in the word of God. Our founders certainly did.

Ancient Near Eastern Laws And The 10 Commandments

The ancient Near East was a culture based upon image. In this regard, the region was no different from any other parts of the world in that era. The powers of nature , worship, communication, and, indeed, every other aspect of human endeavor was represented by iconography carved wood or stone, clay, or other materials used to make representation. The Decaloguethe Ten Commandments, or literally in Hebrew the Ten Wordswas an unprecedented and extraordinary break from the culture of created image. The late Dr. Neil Postman wrote the God of the Jews was to exist in the Word and through the Word . . . An unprecedented conception requiring the highest order of abstract thinking.

The Ten Commandments required the conception of God by the highest order of abstract thinking and in doing so began to train the mind to think thoughts after God. This approach to God, revealed by the Lord to humankind, allowed for an intellectual curiosity that would eventually send machines into interstellar travel, beaming photographs of deep space back to earth on radio waves.

The Decalogue was a major step in Gods mission in the world in restoring that image to do good. The Ten Commandments literally changed the world. If you fear I exaggerate, consider these six phenomenal ways that demonstrate how the Decalogue transformed the world.

When Were The Ten Commandments Written

Where in the Bible can I find the Ten Commandments?

The Ten Commandments were written in stone by the very finger of God after the nation of Israel was freed from slavery in Egypt . Most Bible scholars believe they were written between 1600 and 1300 B.C.

While this is when the Ten Commandments were written, its important to realize they existed before then. But if the people who lived before this time had not known the commandments of God, how could they understand what sin was and what behavior God expected of them? The apostle Paul reminds us we need the law in order to understand what sin is. In the book of Romans we read, What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, ‘You shall not covet’ .

For example, in Genesis 3, we read of the rebellion of Adam and Eve against God by eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They broke the First Commandment by putting their own judgment ahead of Gods. In Genesis 4, we read that God warns Cain not to lose control of his temper and sin. When he does, he kills Abel and is immediately punished by God. These are just two examples of Gods law being in existence prior to their codification when Israel came out of Egypt.

Exodus : 811 Remember The Sabbath Day To Keep It Holy

The doctrine of the Sabbath, as taught throughout the scriptures, includes the following important concepts.

  • The commandment has a dual aspect of promoting both work and worship. The commandment is to labor six days and rest the seventh. Elsewhere in scripture, the idler is condemned and work is encouraged .

  • The Sabbath was given as a token or sign of the rest of the Gods after the work of the Creation. The Hebrew word Shabbat means ârest,â or âthe cessation of labor.â The Sabbath is directly tied to the Creation not only in the actual commandment but in such scriptures as Genesis 2:1â2 and Exodus 31:17.

  • Under the Mosaic dispensation, the violation of the Sabbath was a capital crime . A noted Bible scholar made an important point about why this punishment was the case:

âThe death penalties attached to the violation of the sabbath in the Old Testament era convey two very obvious assumptions. First, the sabbath law involves a principle so important and basic that violation thereof is a capital offense. Second, the law conveys also the fact that violation of the sabbath laws involves a kind of death in and of itself, i.e., that violation brings on death. The prophets clearly made this assumption. Obedience, by implication, means life.â

  • The promises of Doctrine and Covenants 59:16â24 are based on the condition in verse 16. Elder Spencer W. Kimball talked in some detail about the challenges of keeping the Sabbath day holy:

    Golden Calf Worship Site

Two extra essential items of proof at this mountain are whats believed to be the Golden Calf worship website and indicators of a graveyard.

Chapter 32 of Exodus tells of the Golden Calf incident, the place the Israelites make a golden calf, which was an Egyptian god, and worship it whereas Moses is on Mount Sinai.

When Moses comes again down the mountain, the golden calf worshippers are killed for his or her idolatry.

Mr Mauro stated: Near the mountain, now we have this website coated with depictions of individuals worshipping bulls and cows.

And whats actually vital is that these petroglyphs are remoted to this space. It isnt like theyre carved everywhere in the mountain.

It comes because the Doubting Thomas Analysis Basis and others have found what they consider could be Noahs Ark.

The Fourth Of The Ten Commandments

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Moses and the ten commandments – The Beginners Bible

The fifth commandment establishes very clearly the importance of the family in the sight of the Lord. Proper family relationships constitute one of the ten fundamental principles of law, both in this world and in the world to come. In obedience to this law the family unit and all other parts of society remain stable and healthy. In this day, which was prophesied to be an age when people are âdisobedient to parentsâ and âwithout natural affectionâ , one needs to contemplate seriously the implications of the commandment to honor father and mother and the promise included with it.

When parents are righteous, God-fearing people, children have little problem understanding the commandment to honor them, although they may have difficulty doing it. When parents are not righteous, however, two questions about this commandment are often raised. First, is one still required to honor unrighteous parents and, second, does honor imply obedience if the parents ask for unrighteous behavior?

But there is no qualification added to the commandment to honor oneâs father and mother. To understand why, the ultimate model of the parent-child relationship must be examined. Only in the relationship of manâs heavenly parents to their children is the perfect model of parenting. They, of course, are perfectly honorable . If they were the only parents with whom one had to deal, it would be an easy matter to honor them.

Where In The Bible Can I Find The Ten Commandments

This answer is also available in:

The Ten Commandments are listed in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. Here is how Exodus 20 reads:

And God spoke all these words, saying:

1-I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.

2-You shall not make for yourself a carved imageany likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or thatis in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

3-You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

4-Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

    6-You shall not murder.

    7-You shall not commit adultery.

    In His service,

    You Shall Make No Idols

Bible reference – Exodus 20:4-6:You shall not make for yourself a carved imageany likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Explanation: Is there anything wrong with this commandment? Millions in the world need to hear this commandment. Jesus said in John 4:24, God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

All representations of the true God or false deities for the purpose of worship are forbidden. An idol image degrades God and it degrades man. God’s jealousy against false gods is but infinite love which allows no rival for our heart’s affection.

    What Does Deuteronomy Mean

The title Deuteronomy, derived from Greek, thus means a copy, or a repetition, of the law rather than second law, as the words etymology seems to suggest. Although Deuteronomy is presented as an address by Moses, scholars generally agree that it dates from a much later period of Israelite history.

Exodus : 117 The Ten Great Foundation Stones

Ten Commandments (not suggestions) (With images)

Perhaps the greatest indication of the importance of the Ten Commandments is that they are found in three of the four standard works of the Church. In addition to the first time they were given , Moses repeated them when he summarized the experiences of Israel in the wilderness . The prophet Abinadi quoted them to the wicked priests of King Noah , so they are also found in the Book of Mormon. And, although not given in the exact form that they appear in these scriptures, the same principles are also found in the New Testament and in the Doctrine and Covenants . When the Lord emphasizes something with that much repetition, it must be important. Elder Mark E. Petersen said:

âBy his own finger the Lord wrote the Ten Commandments on tablets of stone. They represent the basic law of the Almighty and have formed the underlying elements of civil and religious law ever since.

âThey are fundamental to our relationships with God. They are an integral part of the restored gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and are essential to our becoming perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect.

âVariations of these laws are given in the rules laid down in Leviticus and Deuteronomy as they are applied to specific matters, but generally they form the foundation for all proper human conduct.â

Exodus : 15 Thou Shalt Not Steal

The Ten Commandments lay down the great foundational principles of righteousness. They are so broad and so profound in their extent that they cover all aspects of moral behavior. The eighth commandment is a good example. It consists of four words, and yet the implications are such as to cover a whole range of human behavior. From the Fall, Adam and all mankind who followed him were commanded to labor for their bread . When one seeks to reap the benefits of anotherâs labor without adequate compensation, it is theft. Thus, stealing involves far more than just taking the property of another. President Spencer W. Kimball said:

âIn public office and private lives, the word of the Lord thunders: âThou shalt not steal: ⦠nor do anything like unto it.â

âWe find ourselves rationalizing in all forms of dishonesty, including shoplifting, which is a mean, low act indulged in by millions who claim to be honorable, decent people.

âTo all thieveries and dishonest acts, the Lord says, âThou shalt not steal.â Four short common words He used. Perhaps He wearied of the long list He could have made of ways to steal, misrepresent, and take advantage, and He covered all methods of taking that which does not properly belong to one by saying, âThou shalt not steal.ââ
