Prayer In The Hebrew Bible
Prayer in the Hebrew Bible is an evolving means of interacting with God, most frequently through a spontaneous, individual, unorganized form of petitioning and/or thanking. Standardized prayer such as is done today is non-existent. However, beginning in Deuteronomy, the Bible lays the groundwork for organized prayer including basic liturgical guidelines, and by the Bible’s later books, prayer has evolved to a more standardized form, although still radically different from the form practiced by modern Jews.
Individual prayer is described by the Tanakh two ways. The first of these is when prayer is described as occurring, and a result is achieved, but no further information regarding a person’s prayer is given. In these instances, such as with Isaac,Moses,Samuel, and Job, the act of praying is a method of changing a situation for the better. The second way in which prayer is depicted is through fully fleshed out episodes of prayer, where a person’s prayer is related in full. Many famous biblical personalities have such a prayer, including every major character from Hannah to Hezekiah.

The Hebrew Bible contains 24 books, of which weve come to know as the Old Testament. Now for those of us who have counted the number of books featured in the first half of our Bibles, we may wonder how the number 39 translates as 24 in the Hebrew Bible.

This question may appear out of place. Readers may wonder, Is there more than one Bible? Is this simply a Bible written in Hebrew?
We do have to understand that Judaism does have a portion of the Bible that we have today, just not all 66 books. Known as the Tanakh, or otherwise called The Jewish Bible, this book is divided up into three major sections .
Because the article linked above dives into the different sections, this article will have a different focus. Well talk about how the Hebrew Bible differs from the Bible that we typically read today, why the Hebrew Bible doesnt include certain books that we have in our Bibles, and why this matters to us today.
Ancient Israel: A Brief History

When scholars refer to “ancient Israel,” they often refer to the tribes, kingdoms and dynasties formed by the ancient Jewish people in the Levant .
Scholars draw largely on three sources to reconstruct the history of ancient Israel archaeological excavations, the Hebrew Bible and texts that are not found in the Hebrew Bible. The use of the Hebrew Bible poses difficulty for scholars as some of the accounts are widely thought to be mythical.

Living Torah And Nach
Perhaps the first Orthodox translation into contemporary English was The Living Torah by Aryeh Kaplan which was published in 1981 by Moznaim Publishing. After Kaplan’s death in 1983, The Living Nach was translated in the same style by various authors.The Living Torah is available online.
Kaplan’s translation is influenced by traditional rabbinic interpretation and religious law, an approach followed by many later Orthodox translators. It also reflects Kaplan’s interest in Jewish mysticism.
The Living Torah is also notable for its use of contemporary, colloquial English. For example, it reverses the usual distinction between “God” and “Lord”, noting that in modern English “God” is more appropriate for a proper name. One writer cites these examples, emphasizing Kaplan’s modern translation:
- Shemot 20:810 Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy. You can work during the six weekdays and do all your tasks. But Saturday is the Sabbath to God your Lord.
- Vayikra 18:7 Do not commit a sexual offense against your father or mother. If a woman is your mother, you must not commit incest with her.
- Vayikra 19:14 Do not place a stumbling block before the blind.
- Vayikra 19:29 Do not defile your daughter with premarital sex.
Michael Friedlnder’s Jewish Family Bible
Michael Friedländer edited a Jewish Family Bible in English and Hebrew. It was published in England in 1881. The Friedländer edition is similar in style to the King James Version but diverges primarily in places where the King James translation reflects a Christian interpretation that is at odds with the traditional Jewish understanding. While it never gained wide popularity, it influenced the editors of the first JPS edition, and is cited as the basis for a revised translation found in the Koren Hebrew-English edition.

What Is The Relationship Between Yahweh And Jehovah
The name Yahweh was changed to Jehovah by Christian monks in the late middle ages, a name that is still commonly used today. As a result of the Babylonian Captivity of the 6th century BCE, the Hebrew scriptures were canonized during the Second Temple Period , which codified the character and power of Yahweh.
The Origin Of The Yahweh As The Name Of God
The word Yahweh, is a common word used for the Most High in English.
It is translated from the 4 consonants YHWH,
These consonants are commonly called the Tetragrammaton
The masoretes, who were a group of Hebrew speaking men put together a translation of the scriptures in Hebrew between the 6th and 10th century .
It was these translators, that created the name Yahweh.
When we take a look at this name it actually carries on from the name Jehovah, so theyre in actual fact the same name.
The subtle difference is that Yaweh seeks to keep the Hebrew sound of the Hebrew letter Yod by using a y, instead of a j, which can be seen in the translation of the the Most Highs name Jehovah.
Ive answered why these two words sound different, but you may be wondering why the two names for God both look so different?
Jehovah, is the latin- speaking Christian modernised version of the word Yahweh. This is because of what was explained previously i.e. the Js appearance into the English-latin language in the 16th century.
The Masorete translators, took the vowel signs from the word adonai and put them in between the 4 consonants YHWH, replacing its original meaning
The replacement of the original Hebrew word or the Most Highs name spelt Yod, Hay, Waw, Hay, is a major red flag
The Masoretes claimed the reason for this corruption of the Most Highs original name is because the Name of the Most High is too sacred to say, according to the 3rd commandment.

The Calculation Of Numerical Values Is Also Important For Christians
God himself wants us to deal with numerical calculations. This will reveal additional information that was previously hidden. This requires wisdom and knowledge of the numerical values of the Hebrew and Greek letters. This is how the Antichrist will be revealed. We must first seek Jesus Christ and not the Antichrist. But if God himself gives us some information on this topic, then it is worth being watchful.
“Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666” .
The word used here for “calculate” means “to count with pebbles”. In fact, Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans used letter-painted pebbles to calculate easier and faster .
The Old Testament was written with 22 letters. Some letters have a slightly different shape at the end of a word, but the numerical value does not change. The complete ancient Greek alphabet consists of 27 letters, but the NT was written with the 24 main letters. The letter Sigma has a different form within and at the end of a word.
Why Are Jews Called Jews
The word ‘Jew’ originates with the ancient Israelite kingdom of Judah, but what its name means is a matter of great controversy. It could even mean ‘Thank God’.
The word Jew ultimately comes from Judah, an ancient kingdom centered in Jerusalem, in the 2nd century BCE. But how did the kingdom’s Hebrew name, Yehudah , pronounced ye-hu-DAH, beget Jew?
The earliest reference to the Kingdom of Judah is in a clay tablet found in Nimrud, the capital of the mighty Assyrian Empire . The tablet, Kalhu Palace Summary Inscription 7, dating from approximately 733 BCE, describes the military exploits of King Tiglath-Pileser III of Assyria. On this list of the kings and kingdoms he vanquished is: Jehoahaz of the land Judah.
Clearly, that refers to King Ahazs run-in with the Assyrians, described in 2 Kings 16.
Before we see how the name of an ancient kingdom called Yehudah morphed into an ethno-religious group called Jews, we should see how the kingdom got its name in the first place.
For the sake of good order: The original Israelite kingdom was called Judah. During the Persian Period the land became a province of that empire, called Yehud then in the Roman Period, the land became a Roman province called Judea. But let us discuss the first of those successive entities.

The Ancient Hebrew Alphabet
The ancient Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters . The earliest characters originally consisted of symbols, from which the today’s digital signs originated. 5 of them have special end forms together with the final characters there are 27 signs, but still 22 letters. The 6th letter Wav/Vav represents the consonant in original Hebrew, and in modern Hebrew if there is a dot in front of or above the vav, it represents the vowels or . The letters Alef and Ayin have a sound that does not occur in our language, so their pronunciation is in brackets:
The 22 Hebrew letters look different in different fonts. Here’s an example with Times New Roman and Arial . The upper number indicates the original values and the lower number indicates the numerical values:
It should be noted, however, that the Hebrew texts are not read from right to left, but from left to right. Although the Syriac language is similar, it has produced completely new letters over the centuries .

It may seem odd to Christian readers that some books made the cut of the prophets section and others didnt. For instance, Joshua doesnt appear to have much prophecy, but Daniel does .
We have to keep in mind that we will see differences in structure and even some of the content in the Tanakh versus the Old Testament. This article, for instance, mentions that in Christian Bibles, we have some more material for certain books such as Esther and Daniel, etc. that the Jews do not consider to be canonical.

Is The Torah The Same As The Bible
In addition to naming the entire Hebrew Bible, the term Torah refers to the entire Hebrew text. Some Jews believe that the laws and customs passed down through oral traditions constitute a part and parcel of Gods revelation to Moses, and Torah includes both the oral law and the written law as well.
Why Does This Matter
Why should Christians care about how Jewish readers divide the Old Testament?
First, it allows us to see where we have common ground. If we read similar books, we can have a discussion with readers about what weve discovered in those books and open a dialogue.
Second, we can see where we differ.
Certain Jewish Bibles do not contain sections of books such as Esther and Daniel. We can be aware of those passages when we enter a discussion with someone of the Jewish faith.

Who Is A Jew
Judaism shares some of the characteristics of a nation, an ethnicity, a religion, and a culture, making the definition of who is a Jew vary slightly depending on whether a religious or national approach to identity is used. Generally, in modern secular usage Jews include three groups: people who were born to a Jewish family regardless of whether or not they follow the religion, those who have some Jewish ancestral background or lineage , and people without any Jewish ancestral background or lineage who have formally converted to Judaism and therefore are followers of the religion.
According to historian Shaye J. D. Cohen, the status of the offspring of mixed marriages was determined patrilineally in the Bible. He brings two likely explanations for the change in Mishnaic times: first, the Mishnah may have been applying the same logic to mixed marriages as it had applied to other mixtures ” rel=”nofollow”> Kil’ayim). Thus, a mixed marriage is forbidden as is the union of a horse and a donkey, and in both unions the offspring are judged matrilineally. Second, the Tannaim may have been influenced by Roman law, which dictated that when a parent could not contract a legal marriage, offspring would follow the mother. Rabbi Rivon Krygier follows a similar reasoning, arguing that Jewish descent had formerly passed through the patrineal descent and the law of matrilineal descent had its roots in the Roman legal system.

The Tree of Life Version , first published in 2011, is a Messianic Jewish translation of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament sponsored by the Messianic Jewish Family Bible Society and The King’s University.
According to the publisher, Baker Books, the Tree of Life Version is intended to be a translation that “speaks with a decidedly Jewish-friendly voice to recover the authentic context of the Bible and the Christian faith.” The sponsors of the translation sought to restore to the biblical texts “their actual Jewish essence,” which, in their view, is lost in most English translations.
