The Seven Deadly Sins

List of Sins in the Holy Bible

Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht‘s The Seven Deadly Sins satirized capitalism and its painful abuses as its central character, the victim of a split personality, travels to seven different cities in search of money for her family. In each city she encounters one of the seven deadly sins, but those sins ironically reverse one’s expectations. When the character goes to Los Angeles, for example, she is outraged by injustice, but is told that wrath against capitalism is a sin that she must avoid.

Who Was The First Person To Outline The Seven Deadly Sins

The Christian asceticEvagrius Ponticus outlined eightnot sevencardinal sins in the 4th century CE. Evagriuss influential pupil John Cassian expounded on his list in the 5th century. Borrowing from this tradition, Pope Gregory I analyzed the cardinal sins in his authoritative 6th-century text Moralia and trimmed their number to seven.

Freedom From The Power Of Sin

When Jesus resurrected, He beat death and the enemy. He has power over death! And His victory, becomes OUR victory. Isnt this the best news youve heard? The Lord promises to give us power over sin if we allow Him to fight the battles for us. Truth is, we cannot do anything on our own, especially overcome the power of sin on our lives. But God has given us the power over the enemy when we claim the blood of Jesus. When the Lord forgives us and sets us free from sin, we are set above our weaknesses. We can overcome in the name of Jesus. Though, while we live on this earth, we will face many temptations, the Lord has given us a way of escape . God knows and understands our human struggles because He was tempted like we are when He was living as a man. But He also knows about freedom and promises us a life of victory.

30. Romans 6:6-7 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.

31. 1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

32. Hebrews 9:28 So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

List Of Sins In The Bible

The modern concept of the seven deadly sins is linked to the works of the fourth-century monkEvagrius Ponticus, who listed eight evil thoughts in Greek as follows:

These “evil thoughts” can be categorized into three types:

    • lustful appetite
    • irascibility
    • corruption of the mind

In AD 590 Pope Gregory I revised this list to form the more common list. Gregory combined tristitia with acedia, and vanagloria with superbia, and added envy, in Latin, invidia. Gregory’s list became the standard list of sins. Thomas Aquinas uses and defends Gregory’s list in his Summa Theologica although he calls them the “capital sins” because they are the head and form of all the others. The Anglican Communion,Lutheran Church, and Methodist Church, among other Christian denominations, still retain this list. Modern evangelists such as Billy Graham have explicated the seven deadly sins.

    What Cures These Deadly Sins

The cure for these sins is the gift of a new heart that acts in accordance to the love and law of God. This new heart can only come from God. Ezekiel 36:26-27 says, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Humanity’s only hope is the miracle of a regenerated heart that acts according to the direction of the Holy Spirit to walk in Gods statutes and judgments.

    Personality Quiz:

Power does not come from self to change the heart. On the contrary, this verse clearly points out that God alone gives you a new heart and causes you to walk in His ways. As this event becomes a reality in your life, the seven deadly sins of gluttony, envy, sloth, wrath, pride, lust, and greed will lose their power in your life. With the indwelling Holy Spirit in your life, you will instead desire to live a life based upon the principles of the Bible.

Where Did The List Of Seven Deadly Sins Come From

The seven deadly sins were originally based on a list of eight principal vices. The list was developed in the fourth century C.E. by the mystic Evagrius Ponticus, whose work inspired the writings of monk and ascetic John Cassian. In the sixth century, Pope Gregory I changed Cassians list of eight vices into the list of seven deadly, or cardinal, sins of Roman Catholic theology: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, anger, and sloth. Gregory viewed these as capital, or principal, sins in that many other sins came from them.

^ The list of 15 examples of serious sins found at Galatians 5:19-21 is not meant to be exhaustive, for after listing them, the Bible adds the words and things like these. The reader is thus encouraged to use his discernment to identify things that may not be listed but that are like these.

^Proverbs 6:16 contains an example of a Hebrew idiom that emphasizes the second number by contrasting it with the first one. This form of expression appears often in the Scriptures.Job 5:19 Proverbs 30:15, 18, 21.

What Are The 7 Deadly Sins History And Overview

First, we need to establish a list of the seven deadly sins, and then dissect each one and what it means and looks like.

The most famous faces of sin are the Seven Deadly Sins. They are: pride, envy, wrath, sloth, greed, gluttony, and lust. The list is centuries old, found as frequently in literature and pop culture as in manuals of theology and devotion. Dante surveyed these sins in his tours through hell and purgatory in The Divine Comedy, Chaucer moralized about them in The Parsons Tale, and Brad Pitt investigated a series of grisly murders based on the list in Se7en.

The first person to give us a list was a monk in the Eastern tradition named Evagrius of Pontus. In his treatise On the Eight Thoughts, Evagrius listed eight evil thoughts or demons that hound and harass the desert hermit. Evagriuss work is basically a catalog of problems and temptations faced by the monk, each followed by a lengthy list of biblical passages to use in resistance. Brian Hedges

All Sin Has Been Paid For

R.C. Sproul puts it this way: when I sin, I choose my will over the will of God Almighty. By implication, I’m essentially saying that I’m more intelligent, wise, righteous, and powerful than God Himself. In other words, there is a necessary price for all sin according to a just God.

He cannot look at sin, so it had to be paid for at the cross or all people would be condemned to death. Instead, every person who declares Christ as Savior experiences his grace and forgiveness.

This does not let the believer off the hooksin is still treason, and the believer should know better. Instead of condemning us to death, however, Sproul explains that God allows us to live We have to repent, yes, but the justifying grace that the Holy Spirit brings to us is not killed by our sin.

Gods tenderness and patience should inspire the Christian to likewise show patience and tolerance towards the struggling failures of other Christians, which is not laxity but a reflection of the Lords own grace.

Discipline is loving, especially when handled in such a way, which mercifully and truthfully leads someone to repent and experience Gods peace.

What Is Sin According To The Bible

List Of Sins In The Bible

There are five words in Hebrew that refer to sin. I will only discuss two of these as they are the most common form of sin and the most mentioned in Scripture. The first one is unintentional sin or chata in Hebrew which translates into meaning missing the mark, to stumble or fall.

The second type of sin is pesha which means transgression, rebellion. This sin is more serious because it is deliberate planned and executed. When a person crafts a lie in their mind and then deliberately tells this lie, they have committed pesha. With that said, the Lord hates all sin and all sin is worthy of condemnation.

    1. Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

    2. Galatians 6:9 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

    3. James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

History Of The 7 Deadly Sins

As weâve already mentioned, the seven deadly sins do not appear in the Bible listed side by side. But as you shall find, there are numerous scriptural references to each of the sins individually.

The history of the seven deadly sins goes back to the year 400 A.D. The first person to categorize the vices was a fourth-century monk named Evagrius Ponticus. However, Evagrius identified eight, and not seven, vilest sins to resist.

Two centuries later, the list was refined to seven by Pope Gregory 1. Besides playing a role in the compilation of the seven deadly sins, Pope Gregory 1 also came up with the seven heavenly virtues. The Bible validates both the seven deadly sins as well as the seven heavenly virtues.

Perhaps the earliest scriptural references to some of the seven deadly sins is in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, which lists the Ten Commandments.

    1. You shall have no other Gods before me.2. Donât make an idol.3. Donât take the Lordâs name in vain.4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.5. Honor your parents.7. Donât commit adultery.8. Donât steal.9. Donât lie.10. Donât covet.

If you casually skim through the list, you can immediately spot a correlation between some of the Ten Commandments and the seven deadly sins. For instance, the commandment âDonât covetâ resonates quite well with the sins of Greed and Envy, while the commandment âDonât commit adulteryâ resonates with the sin of Lust.

An Analysis Of All 7 Deadly Sins

Although Scripture doesnt outright list these seven sins , lets take a look at all seven of them and why these particular vices are sinister.

Pride: Augustine called pride the first of all sins. It is the sin that caused Satan to rebel in eternity past and to be kicked out of heaven, taking with him his fellow prideful angelic beings. There are several words in the Old Testament Hebrew and the New Testament Greek that are translated into English as pride,” “haughty,” and prideful. For the sake of this article, we will summarize: when pride is attributed to God it is good. When pride is attributed to man, it is sin.” A caveat to consider: In the English language, we often attribute what we might call the godly pride to a state of mind, or human response that is more properly intended to convey: gratitude: e.g., when a parent sees her child obey her command, or when we stand for the national anthem. Of course, these and other forms of godly pride, i.e., a sense of gratitude, fulfillment, or admiration, can be, like other emotions, malevolently armed to become sinful weapons to boast, best, or belittle. Are The 7 Deadly Sins Unforgivable

Christians can often place the seven deadly sins on a pedestal and claim they are worse than the other sins. Historically, the Roman Catholic church came up with the list after the canonicity of the Bible closed. Dr. Roger Barrier covers the historical implications of the seven deadly sins in Are These 7 Sins Really Deadly?

The idea of the seven deadly sins isnt new. The seven deadly sins have been around since early Christianity. The Roman Catholic Church came up with the list and declared that every possible sin was spawned from these seven. Personally, I would narrow it down and say that pride is the root of all sins.

These seven are often tied to Proverbs 6:16-19 where we find a list of the six things that God hates.

The only sin which cannot be forgiven is the sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. This occurs when the Holy Spirit tells an individual that he/she needs to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. When that person says, No, I dont need him to forgive my sins, he/she has called the Holy Spirit a liar which is the meaning of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. This is the unforgivable sin. God can forgive every sin except saying no to Jesus and his forgiveness of sin. Dr. Roger Barrier
