The Good News Bible Taught Me The Power Of Words But Also Stole My Youth

Bible Review: Good News Bible: The Youth Edition!

This Bible really did change my life. It told me that the things I liked David Soul, chocolate eclairs were things you couldnt like all that much if you loved Jesus Christ

For my 15th birthday, I got a Bible. I have it in front of me now. Underneath the message To dearest Christina, with much love from Mummy and Daddy there is a red sticker saying JESUS. Next to it, in rather childish handwriting, Ive written: died for ME!! On the inside jacket there are more stickers: He was born to die, Have a happy new life with Jesus and, with letters turned into hearts and smiley faces, GOD LOVES YOU. Underneath the stickers, Ive written out a quote from the book of Romans. If we hope for what we do not see, it says, we wait for it with patience.

My parents would have been surprised to see me talking about patience. Their view of the sulky teenager who spent hours hogging the bathroom was that she was more keen on her familys patience than on developing any of her own.

They must have been surprised when I asked for a Bible. Two years earlier Id stopped singing the hymns at the Anglican church wed always had to go to the price we paid for Sunday roast chicken and ice-cream. Id discovered Camus, and you couldnt really sing Praise my soul, the King of Heaven if you now knew there wasnt a God and wanted to be authentic. You couldnt be authentic if you even went to church, so I was relieved when my parents said I could stop.

What Is The Gospel

Read a transcript of this video by Justin Holcomb about the Gospel below:

The gospel isn’t just nice, vacuous words that are sentimental. They’re based on historical facts that happened. Christ died as the historical announcement. Christ died for your sins, is the theological gospel proclamation message. And so, it’s not one or the other, it’s not a nice sentiment that God loves you and he wants to overcome sin. And it’s not just going back to the historical, that happened historically but tying those together. That Jesus died for your sins, to overcome sin, death, hell, evil, the grave.

That’s very important to make we’re not just giving people sentiment, but we’re also not just turning them into historians. We’re putting those two things together. And the good news, the thing that has that high octane pop in life that can be life-transforming and give people hope. It’s not just Hallmark sentiment. It’s real life, the good news that actually happened. And we need to know, and this is what the Apostle Paul said, that if he didn’t rise from the dead we’re the most pitied. I mean, it’s all or nothing. It is, this changes everything in the history of the world or we look like fools.

The Death Of The Innocent

Good News Bible / 2017 / GNB / The UK

It is widely accepted by most, that guilty people must pay for their own bad deeds. Most legal systems are established on this premise.

When it comes to salvation, God did something totally contrary to human logic. God established a plan whereby the innocent pays for the guilty. Even though it might be difficult to understand this reasoning, it is totally necessary for the salvation of your soul. The really good news for you is that you dont have to pay for your crimes against God. Your offenses, your sins and your wrongdoing were all paid for by an innocent person.

The innocent person is Jesus Christ. The Father said of Him in Matthew3:17: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. After thegovernor Pilate examines him, he declares to the people And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of anyof your charges against him. Neither did Herod, for he sent him back tous. Luke 23:14 15

Nothing deserving of death was done by him. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 1 Peter 2:22. The innocent dies, not for His own guilt but for the guilt of many. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God 1 Peter 3:18

Good News of Jesus

Jesus gives voice to the voiceless, face to the faceless, and identity to the marginalized and oppressed of this world.

The gospel is newsgood news.

But what is the content of this particular good news?

First, what it is not: The gospel is not a religious institution, nor a religious system to be managed. It is not a program to be implemented, nor a series of pragmatic choices that one makes to achieve happiness and eternal bliss.

The gospel is not something that can be bought. Many who live and breathe American consumerism consciously or unconsciously come to believe that the gospel is for sale. It is not!

The gospel of good news is a person: Jesus of Nazareth, who walked on this earth to offer an alternative to a humanity devoid of real hope. This Jesus of Nazareth, who died on a cross in order to redeem humanity, announced himself as coming “to bring good news to the poor to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free”.

Tragically A Lot Of Christians Have Moved On From It

I was once at a conference where the speaker before me explained that the church had heard enough about the death of Jesus. He said , We need to stop talking so much about Jesus death. Everyone already freakin knows about that. We need to talk now about his life.

The Apostle Paul would never had said such a thing. And not just because he would avoid dirty words like freakin. No, Paul knew that the only way to understand Jesus life and experience his power as our own is to lean more fully and deeply into his death.

A brief note here: what are you supposed to do when you are an invited guest and the speaker before you says something like that? Typically, I prefer to honor the role of guest and let the conference host answer to God for what has been said.

Typically.

But when dealing with an issue of first importancethe issue of first importanceI had to throw my hat in the ring. I said, Respectfully, I would encourage you never to do what the previous speaker has told you to do.

Yep. I did that.

The Beauty Of The Gospel Is Endless Because The Beauty Of God Is Endless

Good News Bible / 2017 / GNB / The UK

This means that wherever you are in your journey with Christ whether youre in doubt that Jesus really is who he says he is or youve been convinced of the gospels power for 70 years youre just getting started.

And the great news for each of us is that, as Peter says, embedded in the gospel are all the resources you need to become everything God wants you to be .

It Contains Everything Necessary For Success In The Christian Life

Its not just the 101 class of a four-year Christianity major.

Not just the diving board off of which we jump into the pool of Christianity.

Not just the milk that nourishes us until we are mature enough for meat.

The gospel is the meat.

And the dessert too, for that matter.

More than just the 101 introductory class to Christianity, its the entire campus at which classes are held.

More than just the diving board, its the whole pool.

The way you grow in Christ is the way you began in Christ: faith in the finished work and the empty tomb. To progress is always to begin again.

Peter says that the gospel is so profound that the angels, who stand around the throne of God every day, long to just catch a glimpse of it . How hard must it be to impress an angel? They understand more theology than we ever will during our lifetimes. They had front row seats to Gods mind-bending creative power that spun billions of stars into space. They saw God split the Red Sea and fill Balaams donkeys mouth with words and sentences.

Angels are themselves so powerful that a mere look at them turns the strongest human into a quivering puddle of fear. Yet these angels are still blown away by the simple gospel message. They want nothing more than to delve more deeply into it.

The Good News About Jesus Christ

15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want you to remember the Good News I told you. You received that Good News message, and you continue to base your life on it.2 That Good News, the message you heard from me, is Gods way to save you. But you must continue believing it. If you dont, you believed for nothing.

3 I gave you the message that I received. I told you the most important truths: that Christ died for our sins, as the Scriptures say 4 that he was buried and was raised to life on the third day, as the Scriptures say 5 and that he appeared to Peter and then to the twelve apostles.6 After that Christ appeared to more than 500 other believers at the same time. Most of them are still living today, but some have died.7 Then he appeared to James and later to all the apostles.8 Last of all, he appeared to me. I was different, like a baby born before the normal time.

9 All the other apostles are greater than I am. I say this because I persecuted the church of God. That is why I am not even good enough to be called an apostle.10 But, because of Gods grace, that is what I am. And his grace that he gave me was not wasted. I worked harder than all the other apostles. 11 So then it is not important if I told you Gods message or if it was the other apostles who told youwe all tell people the same message, and this is what you believed.

The Gospel Is The Good News That:

We were dead in our trespasses and sin.

Religion couldnt help us.

New resolutions to change couldnt help us.

Jesus, the baby born of a virgin in Bethlehem, was the Son of God.

He did what we couldnt do. He lived a righteous life that pleased God.

Still, he got crucified on a cross under the curse of sin.

He did that for us.

He died in our place.

But Jesus was raised from the grave to offer new life in his Spirit.

Jesus gives this new life to all who call upon him in faith.

The Beauty Of The Gospel Is That Those Who Trust In Jesus Need Never Again Fear Alienation From God

In Christ, you are secure. In Christ you are loved. In Christ you are whole. In Christ you are chosen. In Christ you are pure. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus .

And now Christ has redeemed us to a life of a love and service, where we can reflect to others what he has done in us.

Simply believing this, Paul says, releases into us the power of God to make it so. Renewing our minds in this message, he tells the Romans, transforms ordinary, sinful people into the kinds of people who accomplish the very will of God .

In his letters to the Corinthians, Paul says the gospels inherent power means theres nothing more important to talk about in the church than it. It is, literally, in the first place. It is primary.
