  • The Names Of God In The Bible

Take a moment to think about your name. Would you say it adequately describes who you are to someone whos never met you? In the West, we tend to name children after beloved family members or find names that are popular, interesting, or unique. But in many other cultures, naming things is much more significant.

The ancient Israelites attached a lot of meaning to names. They described someone in a significant and meaningful way. Here are a few examples of Old Testament names and what they meant:

    • Eve: To breathe, to live
    • Abram: High father
    • Daniel: God is my judge
    • Delilah: Delicate, weak
    • Elijah: My God is Yahweh

In the same way, the names that were given to God in the Old Testament offer us a glimpse into Gods character and how people saw and experienced Him. This is why Jesus begins the Lords prayer with the words, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name . To honor Gods name is to esteem His character.

Lets look at some of the names biblical writers used for God.

The Names Of God In The Old Testament

This is a list of Hebrew names of God in the Old Testament. Remember that God is real and these names reveal who He wants to be for you and your beloved ones. He didnt only exist thousands of years ago, when these names were first revealed. He is just as present today, to show you who He is. He loves you with all His heart.

    What About The Rest

Why does the bible have so many names for God

The God you find in the Old Testament is not different from the God revealed through Jesus Christ in the Gospels, nor the God that Paul spoke about in the New Testament. However, the Greeks and Romans they spoke to had many different ideas about the gods, which is why you find many various titles and names for God in the New Testament . Just like the Old Testament authors claimed that their various titles for God all referred to the one true God known as Yahweh, the apostles who wrote the New Testament believed that Jesus was the physical embodiment of Yahweh himself. This is why they speak about Jesus so much. Their conviction was that the God who revealed himself to Abraham and Moses, the God known from many titles in the Old Testament, was most perfectly revealed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah. For them, there was no God knowable to us apart from Jesus. In him, the love and mercy and justice of Yahweh the Creator God became human so we could hear and touch him, and know him by name.

God Is Known By Many Names

God has a way of working quietly within us to prepare our growth and eternity with Him, even though we may not see it. Most rebel occasionally at the process but we keep trying to say yes to whatever He asks.

The God who sits at the controls of the universe is a living active God. He controls all power, energies, and forces. And at His right hand is the living Jesus Christ. Do you know this God? Do you pray to this God? You should. Because as great and powerful as the true God is, He delights in the person who seeks to know Him and talk to Him in prayer.

God talks to us through the Holy Bible, and we can talk to Him through prayer. Prayer is our part of a two-way conversation with God. God knows what is good for us. He will supply every need if we ask according to His will, and if we believe and obey His laws. God wants us to seek Him and make our requests known .

It seems as if God put this subject of Gods names on many hearts lately. Pastors, priests and clergymen talk about Gods names.

Lets start with Genesis 1:1: In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth. This God is named Elohim . It is also a plural word that lets us know the Holy Spirit and Jesus are included. Two other Hebrew words: Elyon and Adonali .

Revelation 1:8: I am alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the Ending, says the Lord, Who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. This is a definition of God Jehovah.

    El Shaddai: The Almighty God

Why did the 12 apostles in the Bible have English names ...

When Abraham was 99 years old, God appeared to him and said, I am Almighty God …I will make My covenant between Me and you . El Shaddai is the name God uses for Himself when He enters into a covenant relationship with Abraham and begins to work through him and his descendants as a special people.

El Shaddai is all powerful. Nothing is impossible for Him. Abraham and Sarah were past the age for childbearing, but El Shaddai promised them a son. And He fulfilled that promise. He is God Almighty. Whatever our need, El Shaddai is able to supply it. He is all-sufficient. Depending on which estimate you accept, there are between 5,000 and 7,000 promises in the Bible. No matter how many there actually are, our Almighty God, El Shaddai, is able to keep every one of them.

Names Of God In The Bible List

There is a whole list of Gods names. There are many.

But if we examine the Scriptures closely, well find that God has only one specific name that is the closest form of a personal name that our Creator has revealed to mankind.

The many other names of God reveal different attributes, characteristics and aspects of the Lords nature and being. So its useful to compile a list of these names as you can see below.

The personal name of God is YHWH or as previously mentioned as transliterated from Modern Hebrew language.

While the exact pronunciation of the letters in YHWH is yodh-hey-vav-hey or yä-w for Yahweh and yi-h-v for Jehovah.

This is the sacred and personal name that our Heavenly Father gave to Moses in the burning bush account in the third chapter of Exodus. The exact pronunciation isnt even known because the ancient Hebrew scholars refused to even say it.

It was so holy and sacred to them, they substituted other words like Hashem The Name or Adonai Lord for YHWH.

Some say the only proper way to pronounce it is in a whisper.

Heres how Almighty God chose to introduce himself to Moses and how Moses should identify his God:

Then Moses said to God, If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me, What is his name? what shall I say to them? God said to Moses, I AM Who I AM. And he said, Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you. . Exodus 3:13-14 ESV:

    Names Of God In Christianity

FB LIVE Whats 2 Chronicles 7:14 Mean? How Many Names Does Our Creator Have? ONE? 10/3/20 Sabbath Mid

The Bible usually uses the name of God in the singular , generally using the terms in a very general sense rather than referring to any special designation of God. However, general references to the name of God may branch to other special forms which express his multifaceted attributes. Scripture presents many references to the names for God, but the key names in the Old Testament are El Elyon, El Shaddai and YHWH. In the New Testament Theos, Kyrios and Patr are the essential names.

Respect for the name of God is one of the Ten Commandments, which some Christian teachings interpret to be not only a command to avoid the improper use of God’s name, but a directive to exalt it through both pious deeds and praise. This is reflected in the first petition in the Lord’s Prayer addressed to God the Father: “Hallowed be Thy Name”.

Going back to the Church Fathers, the name of God has been seen as a representation of the entire system of “divine truth” revealed to the faithful “that believe on his name” as in John 1:12 or “walk in the name of Jehovah our God” in Micah 4:5. In Revelation 3:12 those who bear the name of God are destined for the New Jerusalem which will come down from heaven. John 17:6 presents the teachings of Jesus as the manifestation of the name of God to his disciples.
