A Review Of Phased Reopenings

Two Apostles Lead a Virtual Tour of the Rome Italy Temple

For nearly two years, the Church has designated returning to limited operations by phased levels:

  • Phase 1:Open for restricted living sealings only. Temple workers perform living sealings only for previously endowed members, with the ordinances done under strict guidelines and safety precautions.
  • Phase 2: Open for all living ordinances only. Temple workers perform all temple ordinances for living individuals, with temples maintaining closure of patron housing, clothing and cafeteria operations.
  • Phase 2-B:Open for all living ordinances and proxy baptisms. The temple baptistry is open for small groups particularly for unendowed members with recommends to do just proxy baptisms and confirmations.
  • Phase 3: Open for all ordinances with restrictions. Temple workers continue providing ordinances for living individuals and provide proxy ordinances for ancestors in a restricted manner. Patron housing, clothing and cafeteria operations open as needed.
  • Phase 4: Returning to normal operations. It includes more normal temple operations, based on local restrictions and circumstances, with temple work done by appointment only. Depending on local government requirements, it may still require the use of masks.

We apologize.

I would like to apologize to the LGBTQ+ community, Oaks says in historic talk.

Garments are only to be worn in the temple.

Women priesthood leaders, sisters called to Quorum of the Twelve.

Rainbow revelation! Nelson, Oaks reverse course, declare LGBTQ fully accepted by God.

Church apologizes for temple/priesthood ban, specifically repudiates false teachings on race.

You can be a Democrat and still be a faithful Latter-day Saint.

Church to mandate background checks for all adults working with children and youths worldwide.

LGBTQ people will now have all the same rights and privileges as everyone else, including temple marriage.

LDS Church to members: Stop paying tithing! Says it has plenty of funds nows the time to feed and educate your families.

Women to be ordained immediately.

Effective immediately: Democrats welcome in LDS Church but only if they do not act on it.

Is It Getting Too Quiet

In every Latter-day Saint congregation, theres always chatter about membership activity who is and isnt attending services, for starters and that talk has only intensified since the pandemic.

But Wheat & Tares blogger Elisa wonders about another possible trend: quiet quitting, especially among women.

She believes more and more female members may be attending Sunday meetings, but they arent attending to other church duties or practices. Theyre uninterested, dissatisfied or disengaged.

While there have been countless stats, studies and surmisings about church attendance and activity, gauging true engagement or the lack of it is far harder to do.

But the blogger believes more women the workhorses of the church, she states are stepping back. They may no longer be wearing garments, attending the temple or participating in service projects.

Women, Elisa argues, may be particularly vulnerable to quiet quitting because of the churchs male hierarchical structure. Many women have excellent leadership and professional skills, but those skills tend to be overlooked in favor of more traditional roles and skills like caring for children, music, decorating, etc., the blogger writes. … The gulf between how women expect to be treated in the workplace and world and how they are treated institutionally by the church remains wide.

Timeline Of Closings Reopenings

On Feb. 21 and 22, 2020, four temples in the Churchs Asia and Asia North areas closed because of the developing COVID-19 pandemic. By the end of that month, 24 temples had closed.

By March 24, 2020, a month after the first closures, the number of pandemic-closed temples had reached 111. A day later, the First Presidency announced the closure of all operating temples worldwide.

Temples remained closed for six weeks, until the First Presidency announced a carefully coordinated, cautious and phased reopening of temples on May 7, 2020. Less than a week later, on May 11, a group of 17 temples became the first to open in Phase 1, offering limited living husband-and-wife sealings by appointment.

In a July 20, 2020 letter, the First Presidency announced both changes to the temple endowment ceremony and the start of reopened temples to move to Phase 2. Seven days later, on July 27, the first 12 temples being upgraded to Phase 2 began performing once again all living temple ordinances, by appointment.

On Dec. 7, 2020, the First Presidency identified four temples as the first to advance to Phase 3 of the Churchs four-phase reopening plan as early as Dec. 21, 2020. On that Dec. 21 date, the Taipei Taiwan Temple was the first to have all proxy ordinances joining living ordinances as being performed on a limited basis.

And in March 2022, the first temples started the gradual return to normal operations.

The Kirtland Temple Continues As A Centering Place To Gather In To Dwell In God’s Spirit To Then Go Forth In Christ’s Mission

Through group and personal spiritual retreats, as well as small group gatherings, The Spiritual Formation Center at the Temple serves as a resource of formation and renewal for the Church.

Spiritual formation at the Temple has a long legacy. The builders of the Kirtland Temple wanted to restore the spiritual experiences of the Bible. Key among their hopes was to experience a Day of Pentecost .

The Bible tells us that the original followers of Jesus, known as ‘saints,’ gathered at the Temple in Jerusalem the Latter Day Saints mirrored their experience by building the Kirtland Temple where they, too, could tarry until they were endowed or clothed with the Holy Spirit . They felt this endowment was necessary so they could then go forth into the world filled with the Spirit to share the message of Jesus Christ.
