About Us Evangelical Lutheran Church In America Church Records 1781
This collection contains baptism, confirmation, marriage, and burial records from more than 2,000 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregations. The records range from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century. Select records may be found prior to the year 1926. The information contained in the records varies from congregation to congregation . In some ethnic congregations, you may run into records in German, Danish, or some other language.
The ELCA was formed in 1988 with the merger of the American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in America. Use the browse tool on the right to see which congregations are represented.
Baptisms typically include the name of the child, birth date and place, parents names, baptism date, and sponsors names. In some cases, the birth date is noted as well. In some registers of children baptized, you may find family groups being baptized together. The American Lutheran Church
In 1960, The American Lutheran Church was formed as a merger of the earlier ALC of 1930, largely members of German heritage the United Evangelical Lutheran Church , with members of Danish background and the Evangelical Lutheran Church , made up of members of Norwegian background. The Lutheran Free Church joined three years later in 1963.
The ALC brought approximately 2.25 million members into the new ELCA. It was the most theologically conservative of the forming bodies, having a heritage of Old Lutheran theology. It had been in fellowship for a decade with the Lutheran ChurchâMissouri Synod and officially held to biblical inerrancy in its constitution. The LCA was the slightly larger partner and brought approximately 2.85 million members into the new ELCA. Their administrative offices were in the Church House, a former townhouse mansion on Madison Avenue in New York City. Its publishing house, Fortress Press, was on Queen Lane in northwest Philadelphia, and produced the church magazine, The Lutheran. Chicago The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will observe its 35th anniversary on April 30. On this date in 1987, the ELCA constitution was adopted during the opening session of the Constituting Convention in Columbus, Ohio.
The ELCA was formed from a merger of three Lutheran churches the American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in America. To symbolize the formation of the new denomination, the bishops from the three predecessor church bodies poured water from separate containers into one baptismal font.
The Rev. Herbert W. Chilstrom was elected first bishop of the ELCA during the Constituting Convention. He was former bishop of the Minnesota Synod of the Lutheran Church in America.

Chatman and Joe Nolte, who is also a co-chair of the committee, said the memorials are two of 78 proposals that have been drafted by synods nationwide over the past three years.
Chatman believes the proposals will be the first steps towards action on the declarations the church has made to be more inclusive.
“When people follow some of those recommendations, some of the things they’re encouraged to do, it can give them different perspectives and experiences,” she said. “We are making progress, but we all know we have more work to do.”
Nolte thinks of the memorials not as progressive, but as a chance to live out the Christian principles that are taught in the church.
“It could be progressive in some people’s eyes, but really it’s our church grappling with issues and how we best respond to those in society and within our church,” he said.
