What Does Sin Mean In The Bible

Have You Accepted The Grace Of God For Missing The Mark

Sin

As a free moral agent, you have the choice of whether or not to accept what Jesus did for you or not. You can keep trying to shoot that arrow across the country and hit the bulls-eye, or you can submit to what God has done through Jesus and take on His life.

Many people say they will accept Jesus, but then take up trying to be perfect again. They try to still live up to some standard of holiness in their power. Holiness is not the goal of the Christian life. Having a personal relationship with Jesus is the goal of the Christian life. Holiness and growth in maturity happen as a result of that relationship with Jesus.

If you have never started a personal relationship with Jesus, then I would encourage you to go to the Peace With God website.

If you are a believer, then I would encourage you to focus on your relationship with Jesus and not sin. The more you try to be perfect in your strength, the more you are telling God his gift was not enough. The more you are looking at your failure, the more you are saying Jesus He did not do a good enough job that you need to help Him out.

Instead, try to spend more time with Jesus, spend more time both praying and listening to His words. I think you will find that as you look to Jesus, the less and less sin becomes a problem.

What Is The True Meaning Of Halloween

Time and time again, we see the church comprising its values in an effort to gain acceptance into the culture of the day. Halloween is not much different.

According to the history channel, Halloween originated with, the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats.

Sounds pretty mild right? I would encourage you to watch this 45 minute documentary produced by the History Channel that dives into Halloween origins. What you will uncover about Halloweens dark history, just might surprise you.

Three Definitions Of Sin According To The Bible

Just what exactly is sin anyway? Why do people have differing definition of sin? The saddest part is that people seem to have played as a god of themselves. They think that they can define sin by their own standards and understanding.

When it comes to knowing the truth, it is only by Gods word that we can truly establish what the truth is. In this post, I will submit to you 3 definitions of sin straight from the pages of the Bible.

1. Sin is the transgression of the Law.

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness .

In this verse, we can read that sin is lawlessness. In King James Version, I John 3:4 is translated as, Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

Transgression means, The act of passing over or beyond any law or rule of moral duty the violation of a law or known principle of rectitude breach of command .

From this verse, we can say that whoever disobeys Gods commandments, he is guilty of sin.

2. Sin is not doing what is good.

Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin .

3. Sin is whatever not from Faith.

for whatever is not from faith is sin .

These are the three basic definition of sin found in the Bible. Knowing these definitions will help us to battle sin more effectively. Know your enemy and win the battle at the end.

Christian Views On Sin

Sin is an immoral act considered to be a transgression of divine law. The doctrine of sin is central to Christianity, since its basic message is about redemption in Christ.

Hamartiology, a branch of Christian theology which is the study of sin, describes sin as an act of offence against God by despising his persons and Christian biblical law, and by injuring others. Christian hamartiology is closely related to concepts of natural law, moral theology and Christian ethics. According to sin is “a word, deed, or desire in opposition to the eternal law of God,” or as scripture states, “sin is the transgression of the law.”

Among some scholars, sin is understood mostly as legal infraction or contract violation of non-binding philosophical frameworks and perspectives of Christian ethics, and so salvation tends to be viewed in legal terms. Other Christian scholars understand sin to be fundamentally relationala loss of love for the Christian God and an elevation of self-love , as was later propounded by Augustine in his debate with the Pelagians. As with the legal definition of sin, this definition also affects the understanding of Christian grace and salvation, which are thus viewed in relational terms.

What Law Defines Sin

Just because it

The law we break when we sin is the law of God found in the Bible. So, rephrased, 1 John 3:4 states that sin is violating the law of God. The primary laws God gave to guide human conduct are the 10 Commandments .

We can transgress those laws in two ways:

  • We can live a general lifestyle of lawlessness. This means we live a self-willed way of life without any thought or care for the restraints of Gods law. For instance, people who make all their decisions according to their passions or desires are living in a condition of lawlessness.
  • We can transgress a specific commandment. For instance, Gods law instructs us to not steal . If we ignore that law and steal something, we have transgressed the lawand sinned.

Both the general lifestyle of sin and committing specific acts of sin bring undesirable consequences.

When we live within the guardrails of Gods 10 Commandments, we free ourselves from all sorts of suffering caused by breaking those commandments.Gods law was given to show mankind the best way to live in harmony with God and others . God gave the law as a blessing and intended it to guide mankind into an abundant way of life . He wants all people to have prosperity, peace and joy in their lives.

When we live within the guardrails of Gods 10 Commandments, we free ourselves from all sorts of suffering caused by breaking those commandments.

What Is The Meaning Of The Greek Word For Sin

The Greek word John used for sin is hamartia.

Thayers Greek Lexicon translates this word as a failing to hit the mark. Greek scholar Spiros Zodhiates defines it similarly: missing the true goal and scope of life .

So to sin is to miss the goal or target. It is to fall short of what God expects of us. We can think of sin as the opposite of righteousness. Righteousness is living within Gods just and right standards, while sin is failing to live by those standards.

One Man Brought Sin Into The World

Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned

Romans 5:12

Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men.

Romans 5:18

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

Romans 3:23

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in usIf we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us

Our Response To Jesus Sacrifice

Jewish Insights into Scripture III – What does “sin” mean in the Bible?

It is amazing the forgiveness and freedom we can have from sin through Jesus. We have a chance to respond to this message one way or another.

Those who are far from Christ are stuck in their sins, they cannot escape, and instead, they travel further down the path of sins.

When we become Christians we acknowledge who Jesus is and what he has done, we put our faith in him and confess our sins.

Forgiveness of our sins comes when we admit what we have done, and we are cleaned as described in Romans.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

Only through Jesus can we receive forgiveness of sins and can be saved from death, instead we are welcomed into eternal life.

Without Christ, forgiveness has no power it is only through our faith in Jesus and what he did on the cross.

Living on earth means that we will struggle with sin, and as Christians, it can be a spiritual battle.

Being a Christian also means that we do have help from the Holy Spirit and we are not fighting against our sinful nature alone.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

James 4:7

As Christians, we have an obligation as children of God to continually work against our sinful nature and instead aim to be more like Christ.

It is important to be aware of what sin is because we need to be prepared for our struggles with sin.

We Are All Missing The Mark

When we understand that sin is missing the mark, then we all understand and can accept that none of us are perfect. When you know that you have genuinely fallen short, that your arrow was nowhere close, then you no longer can fool yourself into thinking that close is good enough.

Many people automatically categorize sins into big sins and little sins. We think that God is not nearly as mad at things like gossip, white lies, or maybe playing hooky from church to soak in the sun on the beach.

Good thing there is not a beach in Pine Haven! LOL

We think that God only cares about the big sins, murder, adultery or premarital sex, or stealing. However, this is not the case.

Regardless of whether sins are in our eyes big or little, they are viewed the same way by God. However, dont get discouraged. When a person comes to understand this and acknowledges that their imperfection is just as bad as anyone elses, there is a solution provided by God himself.

How To Be Set Free From Sin

Sin is against God, and it brings the death penalty . But God provides a way we can have that penalty removed through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ: Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness .

When we accept Christs sacrifice and have our sins washed away through baptism, we then cease being slaves to sin and become slaves of righteousness . Righteousness is the opposite of lawlessness. It is striving to live within the boundaries of Gods law .

We can experience a great measure of peace and stability in keeping Gods law today. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward . But let your heart keep my commands for length of days and long life and peace they will add to you .

You need to learn more about Gods law and about how to overcome sin.

The Transmission Of Sin

Separation from God is now our human condition at birth, a condition that consists of two aspectsoriginal sin and imputed sin. Original sin is a familiar concept in traditional Christianity, even though that phrase for sin is neither found in the Bible, nor taught in every church today. Similar to the doctrine of the Trinity , the doctrine of this sinful state of being is derived from numerous biblical passages, such as 1 Corinthians 15:22, Romans 5:12-21, and Psalm 51:5, where King David states, Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

While original sin is inherited by us, imputed sin is attributed to us. The word rendered from the Greek New Testament as imputed is a legal term which essentially means to take the status of one person and give it also to someone else. The doctrine of imputed sin says that since Adam and Eve represented all of humanity, when they sinned against God, we sinned also. Consequently, we have inherited not only their original sin, their corrupted human nature, but also their legal status of guilty, imputed to us because of our shared humanness with them.

What Does Halloween Mean In The Bible

The 7 Deadly Sins Infographic

If you are torn between whether or not you should celebrate Halloween, the following Bible verses about Halloween might help. While the Bible doesnt specifically talk about Halloween, it does talk about witchcraft and the state of the dead. These Bible verses about Halloween have all been taken from the New Living Translation.

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there. For example, never sacrifice your son or daughter as a burnt offering. And do not let your people practice fortune-telling, or use sorcery, or interpret omens, or engage in witchcraft,or cast spells, or function as mediums or psychics, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord. It is because the other nations have done these detestable things that the Lord your God will drive them out ahead of you.But you must be blameless before the Lord your God.The nations you are about to displace consult sorcerers and fortune-tellers, but the Lord your God forbids you to do such things. Deuteronomy 18:9-14

Manasseh also sacrificed his own sons in the fire in the valley of Ben-Hinnom. He practiced sorcery, divination, and witchcraft, and he consulted with mediums and psychics. He did much that was evil in the Lords sight, arousing his anger. 2 Chronicles 33:6

Stay away from every kind of evil. 1 Thessalonians 5:22

Resurrection Seen In The New Testament

There is a beautiful moment in John 11:25-26 when Jesus decides to raise Lazarus from the dead. He looks at Martha and says, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this? This is the gospel message Jesus is the resurrection, He is the life. Even though believers in Him will die, they will live eternally in Heaven because of Him.

Jesus resurrected three people during his ministry on earth. He raised the widow of Nains son , the daughter of Jairus , and Lazarus . Although these individuals were given an extended life on earth, they would each still face death again. What Jesus offered through His death and resurrection was eternal relationship and security through Him.

If you have ever participated in an Easter church service, then you might be familiar with the call and response, He has risen” “He has risen indeed.” This comes from the message of the angel at Jesus tomb. In multiple places we read He is not here he has risen . Jesus was on a mission, we see His death, resurrection, and ascension in Scripture. Jesus raised Himself back to life and then ascended to Heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father.

What Is The Unforgivable Sin

Mark 3:29 says, “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven he is guilty of an eternal sin. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is also referenced in Matthew 12:31-32 and Luke 12:10. This question about the unforgivable sin has challenged and perplexed many Christians over the years.
