What Does The Bible Say About Circumcision

Slaves And Strangers Were Circumcised In The Flesh

Why Does the Church Baptize Infants When the Bible Says to Baptize Adults?

But not only the male children from the seed of Abraham were circumcised on the eighth day. The male slaves and strangers also had to be circumcised . They were circumcised so that they would be part of the covenant and could enjoy the privileges of Jewish citizenship.

When a male child was uncircumcised, he didnt belong to Gods people and wasnt under His protection. We see this in the life of Moses. When Moses was on his way with his wife and son, the Lord tried to kill his son. As soon as the son of Moses was circumcised, the Lord left him alone.

And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him. Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me. So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision

Current Uk Practice Of Islamic Circumcision

There are several surgical techniques that can be employed in the circumcision of the neonate. The most common devices used to date are the Gomco clamp , the Plastibell device and the Mogen clamp .12 The majority of Islamic circumcision service providers in the UK currently use the Plastibell technique as their preferred method of circumcision. This technique induces tissue necrosis by means of suture compression of the foreskin over a plastic ring that protects the glans within 7 days the ring separates and the skin sloughs off.

The birth of a Muslim/Jewish boy brings with it the added pressures for the parents of arranging the obligatory circumcision. It comes as an absolute surprise that even in the modern multicultural era in which we live, these parents still have a limited number of potential service providers. With demand for services far outweighing the current supply, an unhealthy balance of compromise is created for the parents. A lucrative private sector is currently the only available choice and this in itself leaves parents vulnerable in acceptance.

In summary, at least from a medical point of view, our duty as doctors should remain the welfare of patients it is not our duty to tell a patient which decision to make, but merely to carry out said decision to the best of our ability. Perhaps what is needed is a principled and collaborative all-encompassing healthcare system that complements the diversity of the UK in the 21st century.

Brit Milah: The Biblical Origins

Where the circumcision covenant comes from.

Brit milah, or the covenant of circumcision, is first mentioned in the Torah when God commands Abraham to circumcise himself and his offspring: Every male among you shall be circumcisedit shall be a sign of a the covenant between Me and you. Whoever is eight days old shall be circumcised, every male throughout your generations . Since this commandment was given before the birth of Isaac, the second of the biblical patriarchs, Abraham performs brit milah on himself, his son Ishmael , and all of his male servants. The following year his son, Isaac, is born and then circumcised on the eighth day as commanded.

It is significant that the Hebrew term for circumcision is brit milah. Milah by itself means circumcision. However, it is always referred to as brit milah, including the word brit, or covenant, because the practice of brit milah is intimately connected to the divine promise and relationship that God establishes with the biblical patriarchs of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacoband some would say, with their wives and partnersSarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leahas well.

Given the importance of brit milah, it is surprising that Moses does not perform it on his own son! In the biblical account, when Moses and his wife, Tzipporah, and young son, Gershom, are traveling to Egypt to confront Pharaoh and demand the freedom of the enslaved Israelites, Tzipporah has to circumcise her son, apparently to allay Gods wrath .

When Paul Spoke Against Circumcising Anduncircumcising

In 1 Corinthians, 22 Paul appears quite even-handed aboutcircumcision, telling people, whether circumcised or not, to remainas they are and not to try to change their circumcision status. Hedismisses circumcision as nothing.

âThis is my rule in all the churches. Was anyoneat the time of his call already circumcised? Let him not seek toremove the marks of circumcision. Was anyone at the time of hiscall uncircumcised? Let him not seek circumcision. Circumcision isnothing, and uncircumcision is nothing but obeying thecommandments of God is everything. Let each of you remain in thecondition in which you were called.â

Why Does Understanding Circumcision Matter

What does the Bible say about circumcision? What is the Christian view ...

There are many views about circumcision that modern-day Christians lean on today. Some believe it should be done according to the Old Testament covenant, while others believe that the New Testament has stated that it holds a spiritual meaning rather than a physical one.

Despite the two statements, what is clear is that circumcision is a believers choice. It may not be a demand as stated in the New Testament, but sometimes it is a norm in certain countries and societies, and studies have shown it is a healthy choice and for this reason, Christians follow the practice.

Nevertheless, what is important is that physically circumcised or not, the love for God and neighbors still remains the overlying importance in our Christians lives.

You Can Do This Right Now

Maybe now God is telling you that by placing your faith in Messiah Jesus His Spirit will circumcise your heart and refresh you today and forever.

As you confess Messiah Jesus as Lord and Savior, the One promised by the ancient prophets of Israel, the sacrificed Lamb of God, you too will be able to stand with other believers in Him and fully appreciate the words of Saul of Tarsus. Saul, an ancient scholar of Israel who became the apostle Paul, writes of an eternal circumcision of the heart:

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Messiah.

For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.

And in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Messiah.

Having been buried with Him in baptism , in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions.

Having cancelled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

The Circumcision Symbolized Cleanness

The circumcision was a token of the covenant between God and His people. This circumcision symbolized cleanness and holiness. It symbolized the putting away of sin and living in obedience to Gods law and His commandments.

God made His will known to His people, by giving them His law. This law already existed, before God wrote them on tablets of stone and gave them to His people via Moses.

The law of God represents Gods will .

Through the circumcision, the male, who carried the seed, was declared clean and pure and belonged to Gods holy people. The circumcision was proof of membership of the assembly of God .

For henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean

And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defiles, neither whatsoever works abomination, or makes a lie: but they which are written in the Lambs Book of life

Was Paul against circumcision?

This was a false accusation from the Judaizers. Paul lived a life of adaptation he lived as a Jew, among Jews and permitted the Jew in the Christian church freedom to remain in his ceremonial practices until he saw their insignificance in the light of the gospel of faith .

The apostle himself had taken the Nazirite vow . He allowed Timothy to be circumcised . Thus, there was no truth for the charge that Paul taught the Jewish Christians not to circumcise their children. The charge was a created by of his enemies.

Paul taught that although circumcision was commanded by God in the OT . It was an external sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of a covenant relation between a nation, or people, and their God . Although the rite was individually done, the reception was not by faith on the part of the child who was to undergo this ritual. Thus, circumcision was merely a national sign.

Circumcision was no longer important

For this reason, Circumcision became without a meaning when the worship of God, in Christ, was no longer a national sign . Circumcision became a living relationship to Christ by faith . Through, Christ of the new covenant of salvation by faith , the old covenant sign, circumcision, was no longer important.

In His service,

Meaning Of The Covenant Of Circumcision

In Genesis 12:1-3 God established a covenant with Abraham that promised him 1) the land of Palestine , 2) a great nation, and 3) blessing upon those who blessed him and a curse on those who cursed him. It is called the Abrahamic Covenant. The covenant was reaffirmed in Genesis 15:12-18.

God said further to Abraham, Now as for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised. And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. And every male among you who is eight days old shall be circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is born in the house or who is bought with money from any foreigner, who is not of your descendants.Genesis 17:9-12

Abraham was to keep this covenant. It was between him, his descendants and God. Genesis 17:23 says Ishmael was the first descendant of Abraham who was circumcised. All of Abrahams servants were circumcised next and verse 24 says that Abraham was circumcised last at the age of ninety-nine years.

So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer. Deuteronomy 10:16

In Deuteronomy 30:6, Moses said God would circumcise their hearts when they entered the Promised Land. Once again, notice the symbolic use of the word circumcise.

The Covenant Of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, I am God Almighty walk before me faithfully and be blameless.2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.

3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,4 As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.5 No longer will you be called Abram your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.6 I will make you very fruitful I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you and I will be their God.

15 God also said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai her name will be Sarah.16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations kings of peoples will come from her.

17 Abraham fell facedown he laughed and said to himself, Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?18 And Abraham said to God, If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!

Meaning Of The Circumcision

The expression The Circumcision was a technical term that referred to the Jewish population. For the Jews, it was a sign of honor. It separated them from non-Jews or Gentiles . Galatians 2:12-13 is one the clearest examples of this expression. We have added the italics for emphasis.

For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy . . . Galatians 2:12-13

No. The Oxford Dictionary of the Jewish Religion traces the origin of per’iah to the time of Hadrian :

Many Hellenistic Jews, particularly those who participated in athletics at the gymnasium, had an operation performed to conceal the fact of their circumcision . Similar action was taken during the Hadrianic persecution, in which period a prohibition against circumcision was issued. It was probably in order to prevent the possibility of obliterating the traces of circumcision that the rabbis added to the requirement of cutting the foreskin that ofperi’ah .

The New Testament predates this development . Medical circumcisions developed from the later, more radical rite, so today’s infant circumcisions are more severe than circumcisions in the Bible.

Is the foreskin a mistake of nature?

No. The Bible says that God pronounced creation ‘very good’ and that humans were made in the image of God . The Apostle Paul also said that God made every part of the body as he wanted it. .

Pauls Letter To The Galatians

This bitterly polemical letter reflects tensions between Paul and theChristian community he founded in Galatia, a Roman province in Asia Minor. Inhis absence, Paul is finding that his teachings are being challenged by othersclaiming to be Christian teachers who are encouraging the formerly paganGalatians to be circumcised and observe other elements of Jewish law. Paulresponds by vehemently excoriating these false teachers, warning againstcircumcision, and asserting that Christians need not follow Jewish dietarylaws.
