What Does The Bible Say About Marriage

Will There Be Marriage In Heaven? Bible Verses on Marriage in Heaven

In marriage you are not only committing to each other in companionship, you are committing to each other in everything. Nothing comes before your spouse.

Obviously God is the center piece of your marriage, but nothing besides the Lord is more important than your spouse. Not the kids, not church, not spreading the gospel, nothing!

If you had one rope and you had to choose between your spouse or everything else in the world hanging off a cliff, you choose your spouse.

The Bible Presents Marriage As Made By God

A third major reason traditional Christianity has misunderstood Jesus words and believed that there is no marriage in heaven is that it has not paid sufficient attention to the fact that the Bible presents marriage as something created by God.

In fact, the Bible compares heaven itself to a marriage, and says that Gods people are to God like a bride to a bridegroom. See, for example, Jeremiah 3:14 Isaiah 62:5 Hosea 2:16 Matthew 22:12 Matthew 25:1 Revelation 19:69. So it would be very strange if there were no marriage in heaven, and if angels were sexless beings, as traditional Christian churches commonly teach.

Jesus himself said:

At the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

Interpreting Jesus words to the Sadducees to mean that there is no marriage in heaven would cause Jesus to contradict both himself and the Bible as a whole. God created male and female to be joined together as one. And just as God is not the God of the dead but of the living, so everything God does is not temporary, but eternal:

I know that everything God does will endure forever.

Will We Still Be Married In Heaven

Jesus made it clear that no one will be married in heaven: At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage they will be like the angels in heaven .

But this doesnt mean that we wont know each other or will cease cherishing our earthly relationship. The rich man recognized Lazarus in Abrahams bosom, even though he was in a different place and separated by a great gulf . The disciples recognized Moses and Elijah at the transfiguration, even though these two men had lived many centuries before . Finally, we recall the striking promise made by our Lord to the repentant thief in Luke 23:43, I tell you the truth, today you will be with Me in paradise .

The apostle Paul said we will have more knowledge in heaven than we have now . This implies that we will know and recognize people more fully in heaven than here on earth. He also said it was far better to depart and to be with Christ than to remain in the body on earth .

The Sadducees thought they were pretty smart!

Jesus had just silenced the rival Pharisees, with their trick question about paying taxes to Caesar . That didnt slow down the Sadducees. They had formulated an even more elaborate word trap for Jesus.

They told an over-the-top hypothetical tale about one woman who married seven brothers in a row under the law of levirate marriage , none of whom fathered a child with her before they died one by one. She herself survived them all and died childless.

The Sadducees purpose in asking the question had nothing to do with marriage. It was meant to force Jesus into admitting that there is no afterlife.

You see, the Sadducees were the biblical literalists of their day. They didnt believe anything unless they could read it in the plain, literal meaning of the Biblewhich for them was the Hebrew Bible that Christians call the Old Testament. And since the Hebrew Bible says virtually nothing about any afterlife, the Sadducees didnt believe in an afterlife.

According to the Law of Moses, every one of that womans seven marriages, to seven brothers in a row, was a legal and valid marriage. And yet, unlike men, who could have multiple wives under the law, a woman could not have multiple husbands at the same time. Sothe Sadducees reasoning wentif all eight of them were resurrected and lived on in an afterlife, they would be in the illegal and impossible situation of one woman having seven husbands.

Obviously, there cant be an afterlife!

Today all Christian denominations regard marriage as a sacred institution, a covenant. Roman Catholics consider it to be a sacrament,. Marriage was officially recognized as a sacrament at the 1184 Council of Verona. Before then, no specific ritual was prescribed for celebrating a marriage: “Marriage vows did not have to be exchanged in a church, nor was a priest’s presence required. A couple could exchange consent anywhere, anytime.”

In the decrees on marriage of the Council of Trent , the validity of marriage was made dependent upon the wedding taking place before a priest and two witnesses, although the lack of a requirement for parental consent ended a debate that had proceeded from the 12th century. In the case of a divorce, the right of the innocent party to marry again was denied so long as the other party was alive, even if the other party had committed adultery.

The Catholic Church allowed marriages to take place inside churches only starting with the 16th century, beforehand religious marriages happened on the porch of the church.

Much of the dispute hinges on how one interprets the New Testament household code, a term coined by , which has as its main focus hierarchical relationships between three pairs of social classes that were controlled by Roman law: husbands/wives, parents/children, and masters/slaves. The apostolic teachings, with variations, that constitute what has been termed the “household code” occurs in four epistles by the Apostle Paul and in 1 Peter.

In the early Roman Republic, long before the time of Christ, the law of manus along with the concept of patria potestas , gave the husband nearly absolute autocratic power over his wife, children, and slaves, including the power of life and death. In practice, the extreme form of this right was seldom exercised, and it was eventually limited by law.

Theologian Frank Stagg:pp.187ff finds the basic tenets of the code in Aristotle‘s discussion of the household in Book 1 of Politics and in Philo‘s Hypothetica 7.14. Serious study of the New Testament Household Code began with Martin Dilbelius in 1913, with a wide range of studies since then. In a Tübingen dissertation, by James E. Crouch concludes that the early Christians found in Hellenistic Judaism a code which they adapted and Christianized.

Two of these Christianized codes are found in Ephesians 5 and in Colossians 3, which instructs wives to subordinate themselves to their husbands.

And They Can No Longer Die

The language Jesus uses in his response to the Sadducees question has prompted even some traditional Christian theologians to question whether Jesus really meant that marriage does not exist in heaven.

Here is Jesus response again, from the Gospel of Luke:

The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, and they can no longer die for they are like the angels. They are Gods children, since they are children of the resurrection.

If Jesus main point here is taken to be that there is no marriage in the afterlife, some of the things he said dont seem to fit in. Why does he say, and they can no longer die? And why does say that they are Gods children? What do these things have to do with marriage?

It is important to recognize that Jesus is talking to the people of this age according to their view of marriage. Marriage, as they saw itand as many people even today still see itis a legal and social contract whose purpose has to do with offspring, property rights, and certain other legal and social rights and privileges.

Notice that the Sadducees story is all about the woman having children for her husband. The whole point of this particular law of Moses was to provide offspring for a man, to continue his name and inherit his property after he died.

And that, my friends, is why the Sadducees were so wrong.

Marriage in Heaven? â Bizarre Verses In The Bible (Episode 5)

The Bible never states only males exist in Heaven or will during the Eternity. That is an assumption based on Christs words in Luke 20:27-35 concerning marriage in Heaven.

Turn your Bible with me to,

Luke 20:34 34And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

Some versions of the Bible have the word sons here instead of children . While children can be translated as sons at times, it is not fitting here due to the context.

If only the sons of the world were married and given in marriage, that would mean men married one another, and that is not what Christ was explaining. He was talking about natural marriage between a man and a woman, hence the word children to include all of Gods children, male and female.

Luke 20:35-3635But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

36Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

We are all the children of God, and regardless of our sex, we become as the Angels in Heaven when we pass away. This simply means we cannot die any more as we are no longer in the flesh. As it is written, it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment, .

Oh darn, no whoopee in heaven? Not to be disrespectful of you or Gods Wordguess I havent the foggiest idea of the WONDER of BEING WITH GOD IN HEAVEN?Perhaps Im still attached to this world. Cause of my hubbys health, we havent been able to enjoy this marital blessing for some time now. Have to admitI MISS MAKING WHOOPEE!Which brings me to a question Id asked Pastor Daryl Evans and havent received a response yet. He had written an article about lust. I asked him about masturbation, if it was a sin? Or should I pray for relief from sexual tension? Tried praying, taking a walk, SOMETHING to distract me from these overwhelming feelings.Years ago, when I was still practicing the Catholic Faith, after spending 7 months in the nuthouse, I find myself giving in to this and not really KNOWING if I were sinning or not. In Confession, I asked the Priest. He replied that in itself, it wasnt a sin. But that excess of any kind is harmful to us. Now that I am becoming more familiar with Gods Word, this particular subject has me concerned.I know I will never be perfect as Jesus is, but that doesnt stop my wanting to be as perfect as possible for Him.When you get the time, please advise me on this. OK?May you, Pastor Jack, and your family have a Happy, Blessed, Wonderful Easter!!!Always in Christ, JesusPatty

Quotes About Christian Marriage

A good marriage must have its foundation in Jesus Christ in order to experience lasting love peace and joy.

I have known many happy marriages, but never a compatible one. The whole aim of marriage is to fight through and survive the instant when incompatibility becomes unquestionable. G.K. Chesterton

A man who will lead you to God and not to sin, is always worth the wait.

If he doesnt fall on his knees in prayer he doesnt deserve to fall on one knee with a ring. A man without God is one I can live without.

Men, youll never be a good groom to your wife unless youre first a good bride to Jesus. Tim Keller

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times always with the same person.

God Has A Tender Heart For Females

Our Heavenly Father has a tender spot in His heart for females. He used Mary to bring about the birth of His Son in the flesh to become the Savior of the world. What an honor that was.

In Proverbs, God speaks of wisdom in the female sense as she is caring and loving. These are typically strong characteristics of the female sex. Woman are an entirely different creature than men. To me, the addition of the female mindset adds some variety to the world, just as the races do.

Just remember, if the female appearance does exist in Heaven and the Eternity, it will be for appearance only. Child bearing will be a thing of the past.

I Cant Be With My Soulmate In Heaven

Bible Quotes For Marriage Anniversary. QuotesGram

Throughout much of the history of Christianity, the idea that there was no marriage in heaven wasnt particularly upsetting to most people. Thats because marriage as a deep spiritual connection of love between two people either didnt exist at all or it was so rare that very few people ever experienced it. Yes, some people did love their marital partner. But that was considered a pleasant add-on, not something critical to the purpose or success of a marriage.

Today, however, millions of men and women do experience a deep inner connection with their partner. And for these people, the idea that their marriage relationship will come to an abrupt end at death can cause great pain.

After I had already written the first draft of this article to follow up on a conversation with a reader named Foster starting here, I received a Spiritual Conundrum from a reader named Nita, in which she said:

I am widow and a believer in Jesus Christ. . . . I am so lonely without my husband of 38 years, we did everything together, even in the ministry. Will we be together in heaven? Jesus told the religious leaders that there will be no marriage in heaven. I miss my husband so much, my life without him has been turned upside down. Many tell me move on with my life and find someone else. He was my soulmate. Please help me understand! Thank you. I still trust God and love him.

Sincerely,

Very Sad Widow

Besides, Jesus simply didnt say that theres no marriage in heaven.

Lets take a closer look.

What Will People Be Like In Heaven

The Bible says the physical laws will be vastly different in heaven. From this description, it is apparent that ourcurrent bodies would not be acceptable in such a place.1 The Bible poses thequestion, “But someone will say, “How are the dead raised? And withwhat kind of body do they come?” . The answer to thequestion is given in a series of comparisons:2

Bodies in Heaven

natural spiritual

To a certain degree, we will be given some of the characteristics of God inheaven.3 Without at least the dimensional characteristics of God, wewould not be able to see Him, which the Bible says we will do.3

Contrary to the Mormon view of heaven,4 it doesn’t seem thatpeople in heaven will be either male or female. Jesus was asked a complicatedquestion about heaven by the Sadducees that directly leads us to this conclusion.5The Sadducees gave a scenario of a woman who married 7 men in her lifetime. They asked whose wife shewould be in heaven. Jesus answered:

“You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures, or the power of God. “For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

In other words, there will be no marriage or sexual differences among thosein heaven, since reproduction is unnecessary. This concept is supported by otherbiblical verses that indicate that males and females are spiritually equal.6The same concept applies to the races.7 I doubt that there will beracial differences in heaven.
