Read A Brief Summary Of This Topic

Ten Commandments, also called , list of religious precepts that, according to various passages in Exodus and Deuteronomy, were divinely revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai and were engraved on two tablets of stone. The Commandments are recorded virtually identically in Exodus 20:217 and Deuteronomy 5:621. The rendering in Exodus appears as follows:

You Shall Not Take The Lords Name In Vain

Bible reference – Exodus 20:7:You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

Explanation: Has the world advanced so far that we do not need this commandment any more? Has all profanity ceased? Have menand women and children, tooceased to take Gods name in vain? Have they at last learned to honor the holy name of our Saviour?

How many millions violate this commandment every day! And how many do about the same thing with common slang! Let us remember what Jesus said to some careless talkers of His day.

It is recorded in Matthew 12:36, 37, But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

Using God’s Name Improperly

This can be understood to mean cursing or using profanity which includes the name of God.Many languages have expressions of anger or dismay that include the word “God”. In addition, many times people “swear to God” to try to convince others they are telling the truth. Another offense might be to say that “God told me” to do something when He didn’t. The actual name of God in the Old Testament was YHWH, sometimes pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah. Pious Jews refrain from using this name or even the word God, for which they substitute G_d. This is to avoid using God’s name in a way that might break this commandment.

Jews honor the Sabbath from sundown on Friday until the appearance of three stars in the sky on Saturday night, the seventh day of the week on the Jewish calendar.

In the New Testament Jesus did things that made the Sabbath command different from the other nine. Jesus seemed to reduce its demands, unlike some other commandments where he made them stronger. Jesus was often criticized for healing on the Sabbath or doing other things. He said that “the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath”. Doing good on the Sabbath seemed to be praised and practiced by Jesus. In that way he disobeyed some of the strict interpretations that had become common in His day.

Most Christians honor the Sabbath on Sunday to remember the Resurrection of Jesus on the first day of the week on the Jewish calendar.

The Ten Commandments are a special set of spiritual laws to the Jews that the LORD Himself wrote on two stone tablets that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. They are usually referred to as Aseret haDiberot, In rabbinical writings and in the Scriptures they are called the aseret hadevarim, the ten words or ten utterances. They are called the Decalogue in Christian theological writings which is derived from the Greek name dekalogos found in the Septuagint which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew name.

The Torah has a total of 613 commandments to the Jews which also includes the ten from the Decalogue. Traditional Rabbinical belief is that these commandments apply solely to the Jewish people while in fact some of them did though only to the cross. I have heard today many use this information as a means of trying to avoid the Decalogue. Some erroneously state that if you obey the Decalogue then you have to obey all 613 laws which is utter nonsense and those quoting this should be ashamed.

Are The Ten Commandments Relevant Today

Yes. Because the Ten Commandments reveal Gods thinking, we can benefit from studying them. The Ten Commandments are based on reliable principles that will never go out-of-date. In fact, many of these principles underlie the teachings of what is commonly called the New Testament.See Principles from the Ten Commandments reflected in the New Testament.

Jesus taught that the entire Mosaic Law, including the Ten Commandments, rested on two fundamental commandments. He said: You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second, like it, is this: You must love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments the whole Law hangs. So although Christians are not expected to observe the Mosaic Law, they are commanded to love God and their fellow humans.John 13:34 1 John 4:20, 21.

United States Debate Over Display On Public Property

European Protestants replaced some visual art in their churches with plaques of the Ten Commandments after the Reformation. In England, such “Decalogue boards” also represented the English monarch’s emphasis on rule of royal law within the churches. The United States Constitution forbids establishment of religion by law however images of Moses holding the tablets of the Decalogue, along other religious figures including Solomon, Confucius, and Muhammad holding the Quran, are sculpted on the north and south friezes of the pediment of the Supreme Court building in Washington. Images of the Ten Commandments have long been contested symbols for the relationship of religion to national law.

Those who oppose the posting of the ten commandments on public property argue that it violates the establishment clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. In contrast, groups like the Fraternal Order of Eagles who support the public display of the ten commandments claim that the commandments are not necessarily religious but represent the moral and legal foundation of society, and are appropriate to be displayed as a historical source of present-day legal codes.

The Ten Commandments

You Shall Not Bear False Witness

The Greatest Commandment

Bible reference – Exodus 20:15: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Explanation: This commandment forbids bribery and forgery and even the least suggestion contrary to truth. It forbids libel, slander, and backbiting, and calls for the truth and nothing but the truth.

In Revelation 22:15, we are told that whoever loves and practices a lie will be outside the gates of the New Jerusalem, and in Revelation 21:27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lambs Book of Life.

  • Why Did God Issue These Laws To The Israelites

God chose Israel as His own special possession. But their sinful nature, inherited from Adam, kept the Israelites separated from their Holy Father. Out of love for His people, God set Israel apart and provided the law as a first step in His master plan to reconcile Himself with fallen humanity.

The Old Testament lists 613 laws that governed ancient Hebrew society. The ten commandments were part of Gods moral law. All these laws served as guardians, guardrails, and teaching tools to help the Israelites understand Gods expectations, and to demonstrate to them that they could never live up to those expectations through their own human efforts.

The law was also an expression of Gods grace. Because the Israelites couldnt master righteous living on their own, blood sacrifices were continually offered by Priests on behalf of every violator. Without the law, the Israelites would not have recognized their need for atonement. And the required means for atonementshed bloodforeshadowed the one-time redemptive sacrifice that would be provided through the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.

Why Were The 10 Commandments On Two Tablets

    10 commandments

According to Exodus 32:15, God engraved both sides of the tablets. Many people wonder which words were written on the stone tablets and if the first tablet contained commands 1-5 and the second contained 6-10. Other scholars divide the list between the first two commandments and the following eight based on the word length of the text.

The 10 Commandments are evidence of a covenant between God and his people. Some scholars think that both tablets contained identical copies of the same commands just we have two copies of a legal document.

What Mountain Were The Ten Commandments Given On

    Introduction to the Ten Commandments

God gave the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19:20-25Exodus 19:20-25 And the LORD came down on mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount and Moses went up. And the LORD said to Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through to the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. And let the priests also, which come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth on them. And Moses said to the LORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for you charged us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. And the LORD said to him, Away, get you down, and you shall come up, you, and Aaron with you: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest he break forth on them. So Moses went down to the people, and spoke to them.

    Differences In Teachings And Interpretation

These commandments are translated from ancient Hebrew to Basic English, so the exact words chosen may not mean to us exactly what they meant to the Hebrews. There are a variety of interpretations of these commandments:

The Creation of the Sun and the Moon is a fresco in the Sistine Chapel. It was done by Michelangelo. It shows an image of God.A stained glass image of Protestant leaders, including Martin Luther

The Roman Catholics understanding of the commandment to not make “any image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above” means that “likenesses” may be built and used, as long as the object is not worshipped as an idol.

The Eastern Orthodox Church has a very similar position. Eastern Orthodoxy teaches that the incarnation of an invisible God as a visible human, Jesus, makes it alright to use flat images in worship .

Most other Christians allow statues of religious figures, provided there is no “veneration” of them. They are not commonly found in Protestant Churches, but may be found nearby or in Museums. Historical figures or busts may be used for educational purposes. Stained glass windows may contain depictions of honored historical or Biblical persons.

Judaism in its various forms usually takes a position somewhere between the Protestant view and that of Islam. Synagogues would not have any statues in them. Images of God are forbidden anywhere.

Jehovah’s Witnesses criticize the use of all of the above, as well as the use of the cross.

    You Shall Make No Idols

Bible reference – Exodus 20:4-6:You shall not make for yourself a carved imageany likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Explanation: Is there anything wrong with this commandment? Millions in the world need to hear this commandment. Jesus said in John 4:24, God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

All representations of the true God or false deities for the purpose of worship are forbidden. An idol image degrades God and it degrades man. God’s jealousy against false gods is but infinite love which allows no rival for our heart’s affection.
