This is supposed to be the birth year of Jesus, although modern historians often conclude that he was born around 4 years earlier.
The expression Common Era is also no new invention, it has been in use for several hundred years. In English, it is found in writings as early as 1708. In Latin, the term “vulgaris aerae” was used interchangeably with “Christian Era” as far back as in the 1600s.

Current Status And Recommendations
Most style guides do not express a preference for one system, although BC/AD still prevails in most journalistic contexts. Conversely, academic and scientific texts tend to use BCE/CE. Since there are compelling arguments for each system and both are in regular use, we do not recommend one over the other. Given the choice, writers are free to apply their own preference or that of their audience, although they should use their chosen system consistently, meaning BC and CE should not be used together, or vice versa. In the Middle Ages, European Christian monks prayed eight times a day , at lauds, prime, terce, sext, none, vespers, compline, and vigils. Lauds started the day when the sun rose. Prime was at about 6 AM. Terce was about 8 AM. Sext was about noon. None was about 3 P.M.
So how did it get to mean noon? Well, gradually the monks changed the time of the prayers around to be more convenient. They started to say Lauds and Prime the night before, and started their day with Terce. That moved None back to noon. By the 1100s, most people celebrated None at noon.
Do Other Calendars Exist
Yes, a host of other calendars exist that will suggest different years instead of 2021. The Islamic calendar is a perfect example. This is a lunar calendar, which has started in the year 622 CE when Muhammed is said to have moved to Medina.
They use the abbreviation AH instead of CE or AD, which stands for âYear of the Hijraâ. The calendar has 354 days as opposed to the Gregorian 365, and it is currently the year 1441 AH. Believe it or not, one day, the Islamic calendar will overtake the Gregorian one due to its shorter days, but it is not expected to be for another 18,000 years!
