What Is Biblical Prayer

Prayer is conversation with God the intercourse of the soul with God, not in contemplation or meditation, but in direct address to him. Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant, ejaculatory or formal. It is

We do not need to be well-spoken to talk to God. In fact, He hears what is in your heart, even if you cant express it well or even talk. And the Holy Spirit promises to express to the Father what you cannot.

the Spirit also helps our weakness for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words Romans 8:26 NASB

Prayer presupposes a belief in the personality of God, His ability and willingness to communicate with us, His personal control of all things and of all His creatures and all their actions.

Acknowledge The Coming Kingdom Of God

3 Views on Prayer: Which is the Most Biblical?

This one was a bit more difficult to grasp. According to, this could mean that by acknowledging the second coming of Christ and the new kingdom that will be established, it can help to focus our minds on the mission of serving God for the coming kingdom of Heaven, instead of living for ourselves here on earth.

Should I Use Eloquent Words

Your prayers need not be wordy or impressive in speech:

“When you pray, don’t babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered only by repeating their words again and again.”

Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.

Powerful Prayers For Healing In The Bible

Gratefully, God is still in the business of healing and doing the miraculous.

I have a family member who has been battling cancer for nearly ten years. Weve been praying fervently and consistently for her since the original diagnosis. She recently, after ten years, received her first positive report from her medical team. God is awesome!

2 Kings 20:5-6 Return and tell Hezekiah the leader of My people, Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears surely I will heal you. On the third day, you shall go up to the house of the Lord. And I will add to your days fifteen years. I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city for My own sake, and for the sake of My servant David.

James 5:16 Confess to one another, therefore, your faults and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored . The earnest prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available .

Matthew 8:2-3 A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. I am willing, he said. Be clean! Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.

Psalm 30:2 Lord my God, I called to You for help, and You healed me.

Why Are Some Prayers Not Answered

What Is Prayer According To The Bible | Genesis 34

Sometimes our prayers are not answered. The Bible gives several reasons or causes for failure in prayer:

Sometimes our prayers are refused. Prayer must be in accord with God’s divine will:

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

The Promise Of Gods Sure Answer

Luke 11:10 For everyone who asks, receives and he who seeks, finds and to him who knocks, it shall be opened.

This verse simply states that those who keep on asking, seeking, and knocking, who persist in prayer, will receive answers from the Lord. They will receive, they will find, and God will open the door.

It is helpful to note that the present tense is used with each of these verbs regarding Gods sure answer . In verse 9, the future was used, but not here, at least not with the first two. There is a manuscript problem with the third and it is difficult to determine from the evidence if this should be the present or the future. Probably the present as with the first two verbs.

The present tense stresses the actuality of Gods sure answer even more emphatically. This may be what we call the future present which denotes an event that has not occurred, but which is regarded as so certain that in thought it may be viewed as a present reality. Or, it may be the gnomic present of what is a general, timeless principle. The Lord consistently gives to those who persist in prayer. Its Gods pattern. The Lord is emphatically assuring us of Gods concern and involvement in our lives to direct us, transform us, and answer our prayers.

Now to strengthen our faith and to demonstrate why we can be assured of Gods answer and concern, the Savior focuses our thoughts on Gods MUCH MORE GRACE by calling our attention to Gods infinite and holy love as our heavenly Father.

What Is Prayer According To The Bible

In its simplest terms, prayer in the Bible is speaking to the Lord.

It is how believers speak their needs, thoughts, confessions, praises to Him.

It is HOW we do these things that can look different for different people.

Avraham Greenbaum, in his great classic Under the Table & How to Get Up says:

The essential work of prayer is to become conscious of Gods hand in all the processes of life, and to channel Godly awareness and blessing to ourselves and the world as a whole all through words. The words of our prayers are the vessels through which Godly blessing flows down to us.

Greenbaum, Avraham Under the Table & How to Get Up: Jewish Pathways of Spiritual Growth

Words are the vessels through which God allows His blessings to flow and a key way to do that is to pray according to the Bible by praying the words OF the Bible. It is literally praying scripture back to God.

Why would we want to do this?

Well, in short, praying the Word claims our promises from God. It recalls His promises to His children.

It recalls what He has done for others in the past. It serves to remind the enemy of what God has to say about him and our authority over him in Jesus Name.

Gods Word is powerful and it is powerful in prayer for these and many more reasons.

I will share more of them with you.

Keys To A More Powerful Prayer Life In 2022

What Does the Bible Say About Prayer?

I love Luke 5:16 because it shows that just like you and me, Jesus needed a break from the demands of his busy life to recharge his batteries and spend time with his Heavenly Father. The life of Christ is intended to give us examples we can follow and learn from. So, even though he was God incarnate, Jesus didnt draw on his superpowers as the Son of God when it came to facing lifes challenges. Instead, when he was exhausted or burdened or in need of spiritual refreshment, he would slip away to pray plugging into the power, perception, and purpose that can only be found in Gods presence.

But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.Luke 5:16, AMP

Prayer is one of the most powerful weapons God has given us, and looking ahead at 2022, I believe it has never been more important for Gods people to be on our knees. But knowing how to pray is not always easy. Jesus disciples felt the same confusion. They were familiar with the oft-repeated prayers of the Torah. But Jesus prayed with a kind of authority and power they had never seen before as though God was listening! So when they came to Jesus, as told in Matthew 6, they didnt say, Teach us another prayer. They said, Lord, teach us to pray.

Here are eight keys that have helped me develop a more powerful and effective prayer life. I hope they will encourage you to make 2022 a year of prayer.

Practical Tips For Fasting

  • Dont enter into a Christian fast casually. If the fast doesnt mean anything to you, it wont mean much to God. Fasting has to be for a specific purpose, combined with prayer and bible reading.
  • Limit your television viewing while fasting. TV shows are loaded with restaurant and food related commercials. Dont put the temptation to eat in front of your eyes. Those food ads can be torture on an empty stomach!
  • Dont pig-out in the days before you begin a longer fast. Your mind will tell you to eat more because you wont be having any food for a while, but in reality that will make the first few days of a fast even harder. You should eat less, and begin tapering off your food intake prior to a fast.
  • Try to drink at least one gallon of purified water the first day of a fast . Purified or distilled water flushes the toxins and poisons out of your system. Water also makes you feel full. Youll quickly realize that water is the fasters best friend!

Ways To Incorporate The Psalms Into Our Own Prayers:

One of the most obvious ways to pray Scripture is to pray the prayers found in Scripture. The Psalms, the prayer book of the Bible, are worthy of particular attention.

When it comes to prayer, a primary stumbling block is the idea that when speaking to God we should be original and impromptu, that our prayers should be spoken from the heart and done without preparation. But when we look in the Bible we find Christians praying the Psalms. For example, in Acts 4:24 26, the believers pray Psalm 2. Even Jesus himself prayed using the Psalms: His dying prayer on the cross was a quotation of Psalm 22:1: My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? .

Prayer is powerful.

God, in His mercy and kindness, continues to answer the prayers of His children. Occasionally, however, it seems as though there is some confusion as to what prayer is and what it is not.

Imagine that youre on the Family Feud. Your family is amped up and excited about the prospect of winning $10,000 and possibly a new car. The first survey question is presented to both families by Steve Harvey.

Give me Sean and give me Elizabeth. The top twelve answers are on the board. Twelve? Were going to need a bigger board! What kind of question resulted in so many different answers? Okay, lets get to the question. We asked one-hundred random customers exiting Chick-Fil-A this question: What is prayer?’

The Bible is filled with scriptures on prayer. In the NIV there are 367 specific Bible verses about prayer. This does not include the word ask when it is used as a substitute for prayer.

Today, were going to go into the Bible and uncover truths pertaining to prayer. What does the Bible say about prayer?

Ask God For Protection From Evil

How to Pray According to The Bible And Get Answers!

Like trusting in God for our daily needs, trusting in God for His protection from evil expresses a reliance on God and a humility before Him. Additionally, sometimes in our weakness we can be led astray, and in doing so we become much more vulnerable to attacks from the evil one.

This is why it is important to ask God for protection and to watch over us, helping us not to be led into temptation or pulled astray, and asking God to protect us from the evil one. This doesnt mean that we dont hold some responsibility, however but it does demonstrate an ultimate reliance on God for strength and an acknowledgement that we cant do it all on our own.

Use The Three Rs Method

Ben Patterson recommends an approach to praying the Psalms that can work for other Bible passages: Rejoice, Repent, Request.²

To pray using Scripture, ask the following three questions:1. What about a passage gives you reason to rejoice, to give thanks and praise?2. Is there something about this passage that reveals sin in my own life that should lead me to repentance?3. Does the passage lead me to make a request of God for myself or others?

Types Of Fasts Found In Scripture

  • Absolute Fast: No food, no water. Very extreme. Should only be done for very short periods of time .
  • Normal Fast: No food for a certain number of days. Drink plenty of water. If its a long fast you may choose to take clear broth and juices to maintain strength.
  • Partial Fast: Giving up specific foods and drink for an extended period of time. Example: Daniel, while in captivity, requested only vegetables and water for 10 days . Later, during another fast, Daniel ate no sweets, no meat, and drank no wine for three full weeks . He was focused in prayer over the plight of Israel. In the end, Daniels prayer was answered by an angel. This type of partial fast has become known in Christian circles as the Daniel Fast.

Is A Deponent Verb

Since the active voice of the verb is not used, or no longer used, it is traditionally called a “deponent” verb form in most textbooks. There, we are customarily told to just ignore the fact that certain verbs are spelled as middle/passive, since they are “deponent,” and treat them as though they were in the active voice. However, a number of scholars have questioned whether there actually even is such a thing as a “deponent verb,” pointing out that no ancient Greek writing documents such a concept, and that various scholars in the past, especially those with more training in Latin than Greek, have really borrowed the idea from Latin, imposing Latin grammar onto the Greek language. So, it seems that this “deponency” idea is now defunct and deprecated — at least I can find no credible rebuttal for all the arguments against it, so it now remains only as a relic of published textbooks, and instructors using them without question. See the following references:

If you can get your mind wrapped around this, you will see that is not just directed at something, like an English “prayer” or the English act of “praying” . It is “toward-vowing/wishing/willing” something such that you are “toward-vowed/wished/willed” about doing so.
